TrendGirl, I plan to return to Bologna the next time I go to Italy. There is a lot to see there!

Not sure where the "avoid Bologna on a Thursday" idea got started but it makes no sense. Many shops, including food shops, are closed on Thursday afternoons but most restaurants are open and believe me, there are dozens of good ones! So there is no reason not to visit on a Thursday....

We will be driving from Varenna to Pienza at the end of next week and have thought of stopping for lunch ourselves. Is it possible to drive into the city center without too many problems for lunch? Also, can anyone recommend a great place for lunch as well as for some quick shopping?

As always, Thanks fir any replies!

Talk about suggestible! I saw the title of this thread, became immediately ravenous for a boloney sandwich, which I normally do not crave or even particularly like. Thanks a lot! Now I have to go to the frig and see if I can doll up a slice of ham into something approximating boloney.

Here is my 2006 report with much info on eating in Bologna. We spent three days there and had a number of memorable meals at Da Cesari, Gianni, and Caminetto d"Oro as well as a good lunch at Tamburini.
