Big "lie" about pizza

I was so jealous of gravey's 72 responses, I thought I would start a new post. BTW gravey, craving oyster shooters, boiled peanuts and shrimp and grits...can you help?!

We were looking at our pictures (AGAIN) last night and recalled a really good pizza place in Florence. They had pepperoni pizza! We distinctly remember reading in RS's book that NEVER would you find pepperoni (God forbid) on pizza in Italy! Had to laugh because, while we chose differenct toppings, about 6 people came in while we were eating and ordered the pepperoni. We though the funniest part was that none of them were American.

Ok, so I've had a slow day and random thoughts are swirling...

Not Italy, but I can't believe the number of places in Europe where you can order a pizza with "sausage" and it is sliced "hot dogs".

ira May 12th, 2005 01:34 PM

In Itlay, I was struck by people eating pizza and French Fries.

In some places you could get pizza with French fries on top.

((I))

Ira, pizza with french fries on top!! The first time I saw that was when my friends son ordered it in Agordo. The restaurant called it "Pizza Americano". I could not believe my eyes. Very strange.

Scarlett May 12th, 2005 01:38 PM

Yes, it is close to dinner time and thoughts turn to dinner in Europe :D
I think I could try a pizza with french fries, just once.
Right now, if I could have anything, it would be the mussels we had in Paris in March..sigh. I think you have to be there though , to get the full effect.

I've noticed in England that when you see pizza on a menu, they'll have an "American Pizza" and it has stuff like hot peppers or jalapenos on it. It should be called Texas or Mexican pizza. :)

We've also seen pizza served with chips (fries) in England. But, then again, we've seen chips served with jacket potatoes, too. CARB OVERLOAD!!!! :D

Budman May 12th, 2005 01:50 PM

You've got to have pizza with a raw egg cooked right in the middle. ((b))

SusanP May 12th, 2005 01:56 PM

Scarlett, I can totally relate...I had awesome mussels with spinach and curry sauce at La Fermette Marbeuf. Would sure love some right now!

Scarlett & SusanP: Where the mussels still in their shells?
A few years ago I ordered a seafood pizza in Rome at EST!EST!EST! and it came with ~half a dozen mussels still in their shells atop the pizza :). Regards, Walter

Budman, you're so right about choosing a pizza with an egg on the top. Had one in Sarlat last year, and wow, what a great topping!

Another great one is no sauce, just butter, garlic, and field greens, no cheese even. DH said it looked like a patch out back, but oh, was it yummy!

My husband hates eggs and sure enough when he ordered a pizza in Chartres, there was that big ugly egg right in the middle (well, he thought it was ugly)! He just ate around it, but we did think it was an odd topping. How did you like it, Budman?

Budman May 12th, 2005 05:31 PM

I was surprised to see the egg sitting right in the middle of my pizza. I thought I was ordering a "combo" pizza, and I guess egg was considered to be an integral part of the "combo." Actually, it wasn't too bad. ((b))

MCG - Did they order pepperoni pizza or peperone pizza? I think peperone means peppers in Italian but would sound the same.

PaulX May 12th, 2005 05:41 PM

A pizza with an egg on top is an "aussie" here in australia. They are quite common, not all that nice though

Scarlett May 12th, 2005 05:55 PM

Walter, I have never had mussels on pizza but I don't think I would like it. I like them in a bowl of broth with a loaf of bread :)

I remember my surprise when I had an egg on top of a saladd once in Paris-maybe my first trip there- now I like to make them that way at home..or on top of a bowl of spaghetti...makes it all creamy..

indytravel May 12th, 2005 06:03 PM

Ohhh....salade lyonnaise with the poached egg on top and the lardons. The yolk makes an excellent dressing for the salad.

Scarlett May 12th, 2005 06:08 PM

Hi david! Yes, a creamy Dijon kind of salad dressing.

cigalechanta May 12th, 2005 06:18 PM

I expect you to cook, David :)

indytravel May 12th, 2005 06:19 PM

Hey cigale & scarlett!

Me cook? I'm lucky to be able to light the grill. :-)

Real pizza, the deepdish kind with all kinds of good stuff including loads of sausage -- where? At Gino's East, just off N. Michigan Ave., Chicago. Eggs on pizza? You've got to be kidding.
