Best street markets in Paris?
 

I am planning to rent an apartment in Paris for 6 nights in May of 2008. Part of the experience my traveling companions and I are looking for is being able to stroll amazing street markets. I know there are several throughout the city, but which markets do you prefer in the city? Also, which areas of the city are your favorite to stay in? Thanks for your advice!

My two favorite street markets are Rue Mouffetard in the 5th and rue montorguei in the 3rd. Which works out well as those are my two favorite quarters to stay in. Most of my trips to Paris I've stayed in the 5th or 6th, and in hotels. My last trip I rented an apartment on rue Chapon in the 3rd (near the 4th). Really can't go wrong in either of those areas. Rue Cler in the 7th is a street market many people like but I prefer the other two I mentioned. But there are several more. If you do a search even on this forum for street markets in Paris you'll get tons of information.

My 2 favorites are Richard Lenoir nr Pl de Bastille and Saxe Breteuil in the 7th with a view of the Eiffel Tower, These are both "real" markets , with vendors coming in from the countryside, not stalls set up outside of shops as is rue Cler.
Richard Lenoir is Thus and Sundays..there is also an arts and craft market at the same place ( rue Richard Lenoir) on Saturdays.

Saxe-Breteuil is Wed and Sat.

There are street markets and market streets.

The first set up usually 2-3 days of the week in a local square or down the median of a divided street.
The last are permanent shops that often open out into the sidewalk.
Marches Bastille and Saxe-Breteuil are street markets; rue Montorgueil and rue Mouffetard are market streets.

All are "real" markets.

I like the Place Allegre (sp?) street market - called a marche aux forains (itinerant peddlers i believe) it's said to be the only such one in Paris

But you have the tradition blocks of foods and cheap goods plus at least on some days an antiques and book market as well.

To fill this out a little more, we are planning to cook most of our own meals (maybe not lunches) so we would like to be near a daily market, or between two that run on alternate days. Thanks, and the help you've given so far has been wonderful!

Boulevard Raspail. Everything about it is just wonderful. Last time we were there we saw Juliette Binoche who was extradinarily beautiful.

For food...rue de Seine between Blvd. St.Germain and rue Buci....in the 6th. Plus on rue Buci there are lots of food shops. I've stayed in that area since the early 80s and have never had a problem with finding food. Plus, there's a supermarket right in the middle of the outdoor food markets. Happy Travels!

I'd also recommend the Saxe Breteuil market.

I'll recommend the market at Blvd Edgar Quinet/ Rue du Depart opposite Tour Montparnasse. It is an art and craft market. Nearest Metro is Edgar Quinet but if you use Gaiete it is an interesting walk down Rue de la Gaite.

You can combine the excursion with a visit to Cimetiere Montparnasse (Baudelaire, Sartre, Simon de Beauvoir, Jean Seberg, Captain Dreyfus).

The Edgar Quinet market has arts and crafts on Sunday only. There is a regular street market for food there on Wednesday and Saturday.
