You can look at the menu in English by clicking on the union jack.

Another good place to eat is the Brasserie en l'Ile, just across the bridge from Notre Dame on Ile de St. Louis. I don't think they have a menu prix fixe, but you could do very well a la carte. Great place with a great view, ifyou can eat outside.

hi ira, i once had one swig of a divine wine that goes for $1000 a case. it was being served by accident at an auction, until they realized they were pouring one of their high end auction items gratis to the rabble :) i never expect to drink anything like that again, but glad to have that one taste!

my "great wine" is probably your "good" so i'm happy to hear i may be able to fit it in my budget in paris :)

thank you all for the wealth of suggestions. i'll be staying in the 6th, but some of the farther-lying places sound worth a trip. and if i do most of my restaurant/brasserie-going at lunch, it sounds like i will be able to eat very well indeed.

A restaurant that I liked and have dinned there a number of times is La Table d'Aligre. A friend of mine from Chablis took me their the first time and this place is not well know to the tourists. It is located about 3 or 4 blocks behind the new Opera at Bastille.

They are open for lunch and reopen about 8 in the evening for dinner. The menu is creative and seems to change daily. This restaurant was noted in the Bon Appetite magazine a few years ago in their Paris issue. Price is about 27€ for a three course meal. I would recommend a reservation as there has always been a line at the door when they open in the evening.

Gundy if you are not in the least adventuresome, the soup and duck confit (a well done leg and thigh of duck) are safe bets

Try the foie gras or pate and the rabbit or steak tartare if you like to experience different meals.

Enjoy. As Ira says the wine is good, not great. The aperitif was kir royale last time.

BTW - "volaille" is chicken so no need to be afraid of that though in this case it is in a stew with foie gras... a good chance to try this wonderful delicacy.

Here's all the info regarding the cute Basque/Bearn bistro, Auberge de Jarente, which for us, always warrants a trip to this atmospheric corner of the Marais.

As you see, for dinner you can have 3 (very plentiful) courses along with a bottle of Southwestern wine (such as Cahors, Irouléguy) for 32 euros. The locals sitting next to us on our last visit proclaimed it to be the best value in their neighborhood.

They have a nice 3 course set price menu that I believe is around 30 euros. That doesn't include wine or drinks. Its is well worth the visit. First the Ile St Louis is lovely to visit, second the bistro has a great French menu and has NEVER let me down.

Leon's is fine for mussels, and they are everywhere, but have little ambience. You can get mussels MANY places, but our favorite thing to do is to go across the street from the Gare de Nord and have them at one of the cafes along the street there, sitting on the sidewalk area, facing the gare. Our favorite is Maison Blanche. They are cheap--and of course, have other things too.

I would really recommend the place called Chez Clement. There are several of them in the city. A warm, friendly armosphere
