If dassi likes the Rollingstones he's looking for some fun. I think Paris, although lovely, has less to offer if you are interested in having a great time. It's too prissy and uptight.I'm an architect and interested in art galleries. Not a total dummy. ; )

Barcelona, Amsterdam and London rock! They also have a young culture and incredible vitality. Florence is quieter but can't be matched in museums, art, sculpture and atmosphere. I was completely blown away by it.

Ireland is great too. Dublin is a lot of fun, as is Galway. (Very 20 something culture). There are some interesting spots between the two to stretch out the week. : )

Venice was a huge disappointment for me. Sorry if I'm stepping on some toes. It is such a sad tourist mecca. Enjoyed what I saw there but would never want to go back. In fact it was almost as prissy as Paris!

Do I detect a pattern here? My opinion is different, not a poor opinion.

Dassi, since some of your group has been to some of these places, I'd probably vote for Barcelona. Lots to do and tons of nightlife.

... nothing wrong except that they can cost 2-5 times what flying costs on routes of 6-24 hours.

The question was so vague - - even with the additional clarification - - that it only makes sense that there will be widely differing opinions.

Agreed. I would definitely put Beggar's Banquet on the short list. And if you haven't heard the recent SACD hybrid remaster, it's <i>very</i> highly recommended!
