Nico is excellent but I agree with Nessundorma; I would not spend too much time seeking out gelato in Venice as I do not think it will compare with the best that southern Italy, and even Florence, has to offer.

If I'm in Venice, who cares about the gelato ?!

nessundorma Jun 1st, 2006 08:22 AM

that's the way I feel.

JandaO Jun 1st, 2006 09:11 AM

I feel that in Venice you should experience all that YOU love, be it Gelato, Museums, Churches, Canals, Restaurants.....ect

I also like Nico's.

Why are we being so petty?
Let others enjoy what they like.

"Let others enjoy what they like."

Who's stopping anyody from enjoying what they like? Sounds like an impossible task. People are talking about their feelings. No right or wrong feeling about Venice and gelato. Some feel it's important. Others feel it's unimportant. Why think the expression of one is petty and the other isn't?

I am desperately trying to find the name and location of the gelateria I visited while in Florence. It’s very small, only has a few tables and is decorated in 50s coca-cola memorabilia. It was on a small side street, on the way to the Duomo believe.

Thamman:

With a little more information I might be able to help, as I'm in Florence right now and we are plowing our way through the gelaterie in town.

Was it to the north or south of the Duomo?

thamman Jun 26th, 2006 11:31 AM

I think it was to the South, but its been a little while. Thank you SO SO much, its very kind of you either way!

krix Jun 26th, 2006 11:41 AM

I'm on it...I'll see what I can do tomorrow.

GirlTravel Jun 26th, 2006 11:58 AM

That's funny, krix in Firenze, on to the Gelateria!

Well, the three best gelateria that are closest to the Duomo that I can think of are: VIVOLI,(good, very touristed-near Santa Croce); NERI (maybe the best, near Palazzo Vecchio, on the via dei Neri) and CAROZZA(can't remember which street).

As for Venice, well, the gelateria wars here have been fought and won: the winner-Nico's on the Zattere in Dorsudoro, and my very favorite,
Gelateria CA'D'ORO-on the Strada Nuova-their "arancia" (orange) and "pompelmo di rosa" (pink grapefruit) gelato is to die for!

Gelato in Italy must be eaten twice a day: first, as a mid-afternoon pick-me-up, and then, at night, after dinner, before going to bed.

nessundorma Jun 26th, 2006 12:21 PM

Perhaps thamman is thinking of Perche Non!

ekscrunchy Jun 26th, 2006 12:21 PM

Perche Noi is close to the Duomo in Florence; gets my vote for best in town. Closed Tuesday. Nico is excellent in Venice.

ekscrunchy Jun 26th, 2006 12:22 PM

..oops, should read, Perche No?

GirlTravel Jun 26th, 2006 12:28 PM

Yes, agree Perche No? is very good, more like a ice cream parlour than a traditional gelateria-located on via dei Tavolini. I had a semifreddo here-excellent.
