Berlin ?? from Thingorjus

Guttentag to all the citizens of Fodorville. I will be leaving for Berlin in a few weeks and I have a few questions for kind people to answer.

1. How do I make reservations at the restaurant in the Reichstag Building? Is there a website? Should I wait until I get to Berlin and call from my hotel--the Melia on Friedrichstrasse?

2. Can I walk from the Friedrichstrasse to the Saturday Flea/Antique Market in the Tiergarten? I can walk 4 miles with no difficulty.

3. What is the best way for me to get from the Friedrichstrasse to KeDeWa Dept. Store? Is there a bus or U-bahn?

4. What is the best way to get from the airport to my hotel? Should I taxi or take public transport?

Thank you.

Thingorjus

In my opinion, the only reason to eat at the restaurant on the roof of the Reichstag building is to by-pass the line to get up there. The view if very nice, the food is not that great.

111op Nov 18th, 2007 10:26 AM

There's a U-bahn stop right near KaDeWe -- Wittenbergplatz. Just check a subway map to figure out how to connect. There should be an S-bahn (I forget if there's a U-bahn stop) at Friedrichstr.

Which airport are you using? You may want to Google the Berlin airports. They should have sections that give you public transportation info if you need it.

marginal_margiela Nov 18th, 2007 10:36 AM

I am eating in the restaurant in the Reichstag to bypass the line. I don't queue up very well for and Englishman.

I am coming into Tegel Airport from JFK.

Cheers, thanks a lot.

WillTravel Nov 18th, 2007 10:38 AM

Use the Berlin transit planner here:
http://www.fahrinfo-berlin.de/Fahrinfo/bin/query.bin/en

My recollection is that it's very easy to get from Friedrichstrasse to KaDeWe. I think you just go to Zoo station on the U-Bahn and walk from there, but I don't recall which U-Bahn #s.

Use mappy.com to find the distance between the Melia and the flea market. I would guess it's less than 4 miles.

The time of day that you arrive may help decide what's the best transit plan to/from the airport. If you are arriving at or departing from Tegel, I would suggest spending the 15 Euros or so for the taxi fare.

JudyC Nov 18th, 2007 11:22 AM

Tegel is very close to town, take taxi; I am afraid it's hard to picture you logging luggqge around publc transport.

There is bus stop around the corner of Unter Den Linden & Friedrichstrasse, quite convenient for your destinations.

If you are into Christmas market, there is a huge one not far from your hotel, near Opera House;

skatedancer Nov 18th, 2007 11:29 AM

We booked the Reichstag on arrival through our hotel concierge, but here is the information I had on file to book beforehand yourself:
Tables can be reserved by telephone on +49 (0)30 - 22 62 99 33 or online at
[email protected]

Public transport in Berlin is excellent, and you should have no trouble figuring out how to get around. Taxis are always available, especially at all the tourist spots, because I don't think the locals take them!

I got some great vintage stuff at that flea market.

I know you're up on current fashion, but are you by any chance interested in old leather jackets? We found a great, really cheap place in Prenzlauer Berg. They had to have been secondhand because of the prices, but they were in such good condition in was hard to tell. If you are interested, I'll check back on this thread, because I would have to find a Berlin map to figure out approximately where the store would have been.

altamiro Nov 18th, 2007 11:37 AM

The express bus TXL runs from Tegel into the city and along Unter den Linden. I don't know where the Melia hotel is situated on Friedrcihstrasse (it's quite a long street) but if it is near the crossing with Unter den Linden then you don't win anything by using a taxi.

Hi THin,

I loved Berlin and walked all over. I actually walked from the Tiergarten to KeDeWa Dept. Store on Alexander Platz. Actually, I rarely took any transportation while there, though it has one of the best public transportation systems among all European cities I have visited.

But I would take a taxi from the Airport; don't you just hate to drag suitecases around? Unless, of course, you are a true Fodorite and travel very light...

P.S: My daughter just remembered that Friedrichstrasse is very long. But if your hotel is near Postdamer Platz it will be walkable.

WillTravel Nov 18th, 2007 04:25 PM

The Melia is on Friedrichstrasse about 1 or 2 blocks from Unter den Linden, going north, just by the river Spree.

kleeblatt Nov 18th, 2007 11:50 PM

Do try to find the British and US embassies near the Unter den Linden Strasse. East Germany is now free but those two embassies aren't. Especially the US embassy. It has barricades, security guards and the works outside the building. I don't even think you can walk past it anymore. Really sad.

altamiro Nov 19th, 2007 01:01 AM

>Especially the US embassy. It has barricades, security guards and the works outside the building. I don't even think you can walk past it anymore.

They probably confused Berlin with Beirut while planning.

Can you imagine that the US Embassy wanted to claim over 1/3 of Pariser Platz - the area before the Barandenburger Tor - as their security are, complete with barbed wire and all? I mean if they buil a fortification somewhere in a quiet side street they should be free to do so, but can you imagine any country - whatever their need for security is - to build their embassy right in front of the Lincoln memorial in the US and then claim 1/3 of the park in itīs front?

Surie Nov 19th, 2007 04:18 AM

Hi Thin-- I just got back from a week in Berlin visiting my daughter, and had a blast. The u-bahn is great and easy, but coming from Tegel it makes sense to get a taxi. It will be about 20 Euros.

I have some good restaurant/shopping suggestions if you are interested. I've been planning to write them up, but haven't gotten to it yet.

It gets dark so early there that you should go for lunch to see the Reichstag. The weather was cold and drizzly or foggy most of the time; it even snowed a little twice. There are cozy little cafes everywhere so you won't mind the weather!

Have fun!!

marginal_margiela Nov 19th, 2007 05:14 AM

Danka shane to all you gut volks!!

Yes, my hotel, Melia, is at the crossroads of Friedrichstrasse and the Spree. My room will overlook the Spree because I am an avid fisherman and I plan to fish on Christmas Eve with some live bait and a bottle of Krug 1963.

Where can I get a good liverwurst sarnie???

Who knows of a good Chinese restaurant in Mitte?

Where is a gut Kaffeehaus for people watching??

Maybe you really are thanking "Shane," but it's Danke Schoen (o with umlaut = oe).

Enjoy your trip.

marginal_margiela Nov 19th, 2007 02:30 PM

I know it is schoen. Do you really think that I--a graduate of Dartmouth and Penn--would be that stupid?

Some of you really kill me.

You can't have a sense of humour in Fodorville anymore.

Thingorjus

cigalechanta Nov 19th, 2007 02:51 PM

EVOO one is a drag at times here :)

111op Nov 19th, 2007 02:53 PM

Sure, why not?

There're a lot of stupid people out there. Plus you didn't go to Harvard or Yale or Princeton. If I knew you had gone to Harvard or Yale or Princeton, I'd not have dared question you. But alas!

(Yeah, talk about humor! Ha ha ha.)

111op Nov 19th, 2007 02:58 PM

By the way, that was meant to be light-hearted. Please don't take it too seriously. I thought that I'd better clarify in case the Fodor's police all gang up on me.

Cowboy1968 Nov 19th, 2007 03:05 PM

Unfortunately, Chinese food has become somewhat unfashionable during the last couple years.

Shiro i Shiro is a fine example of Asian cuisine with some international flavor, though.
Needless to say that they also have Krug
http://www.shiroishiro.com/

If you want to watch people IN the kaffeehaus and not those passing by , you can try the Einstein Unter den Linden, or the café in the opera, also Unter den Linden.

And a liverwurst sarnie? I suspect that a sarnie is a sandwich, but even after having lived in Berlin for 10 years I never had one or seen one. You can ask at most butchers that they make a sandwich from the different types of sausages they have, though.

marginal_margiela Nov 19th, 2007 03:54 PM

I was actually looking for Chinese takeaway, guv. The kind of place where I could take stuff back to my hotel and eat in bed.

Yes, a sarnie is a sandwich. You aren't from Stepney, obviously.

Please, darling, my father went to Princeton and Dubya went to Yale and they both make a room of battery chickens look like a think tank.

Hi, Mimi.

Guten Tag, Thingorjus-

1. How do I make reservations at the restaurant in the Reichstag Building? Is there a website? Should I wait until I get to Berlin and call from my hotel--the Melia on Friedrichstrasse?

I strongly recommend a reservation by email ASAP:

[email protected]

The food is quite good there - certainly not gourmet food, but modern, decent, light cuisine on a medium price level. The place is most charming in the evening.

2. Can I walk from the Friedrichstrasse to the Saturday Flea/Antique Market in the Tiergarten? I can walk 4 miles with no difficulty.

Yes, you can walk. You can also take public transport. You should made yourself familiar with the public transport system (which is, BTW, excellent):

http://www.bvg.de/index.php/en/Bvg/Start
http://www.vbbonline.de/start.php?id_language=2

Your hotel is very close to S-Bahnhof Friedrichstraße. This station is a major hub for U-Bahn and S-Bahn.

When you are in your hotel, you will find a complimentary map of Berlin and of the public transport system. It is very easy to find your way. And the hotel concierge will help.

3. What is the best way for me to get from the Friedrichstrasse to KeDeWa Dept. Store? Is there a bus or U-bahn?

Yes, there are connections. Again, look into the map or use the website to find a connection.

4. What is the best way to get from the airport to my hotel? Should I taxi or take public transport?

Which airport?
From Tegel, I would take a taxi (around 25 Euros). (You can take a bus, but with baggage, it is not too recommendable).
From Schönefeld, take the train to Friedrichstraße. From there, you can walk.

fnarf999 Nov 20th, 2007 12:33 AM

"Please, darling, my father went to Princeton and Dubya went to Yale and they both make a room of battery chickens look like a think tank."

Just so you know, I'm going to be stealing this line at a minimum of three parties Thanksgiving!

BTilke Nov 20th, 2007 02:32 AM

MM, keeping close track of your upcoming plans and can't wait to read your trip report...

I'm taking Mom to Germany in May or June and while I'd like to splurge on 5 star properties, if that's not possible, your choice--the Melia--sounds like a good bet. Give us lots of details when you return!

Also, she'll be flying from Philly (or maybe Newark), so I want to hear how your flight goes as well.

In the meantime, you might want to watch Euromaxx and PopXport on dayvaytayfow they have lots of cool segments about things in Berlin.

marginal_margiela Nov 20th, 2007 05:21 AM

I am flying from JFK. I have a cottage in the Poconos, so I will take a bus from Stroudsburg to Port Authority then take a train from Penn Station to Jamaica Station and the Airtrain to JFK.

Believe it or not, I am taking one small bag with me. It will be jeans and sweats for me, sweetie darling. I am flying WAY under the radar for this trip.

This trip is all about relaxing, walking, sitting in cafes, and looking at Christmas displays and markets. No partying with the jet set. No Muffy antics.

My trip report with be very sober, sweetie darling. But, I will be keeping my eyes wide open for Berliner fashion and clothing shops.

Thanks,
Thingorjus

Cowboy1968 Nov 20th, 2007 05:50 AM

I hope you also pack a warm jacket or coat because Berlin can be really <b>cold</b>!

But in case you do not, there is still Galeries Lafayette and Quartier 206 Department Store on Friedrichstra&szlig;e, just a 10 minute stroll southbound from your hotel. ;-)

jette Nov 20th, 2007 06:13 AM

Thin in sweats and jeans??
Now I KNOW I've seen everything on Fodors!

marginal_margiela Nov 21st, 2007 04:12 AM

Of course I wear sweats--I am a jock. I guess some of you don't realise that I ran track at Dartmouth. I also bike, do yoga, tae-bo, and lift weights. Last night, I was on the Stair Climber at my gym for 35 minutes followed by 25 minutes with the yoga ball. How do you think I stay thin and gorjus????????

Ja, I will wear a warm coat in Berlin.

The closest thing to a decent chinese take out near Melia is the Thai/chinese restaurant inside the Friedrichstrasse train/S bahn station which is just across the street from the hotel. The station also has a sushi take out place. The most popular take out in Berlin is doenner which is the turkish version of a gyros pita sandwich. They are everywhere.

Just diagonally across the river Spree from Melia is the waterfront Schifferbaum which has a number of indoor/outdoor cafes/restaurants packed with the local youngish crowd in the weekend evenings(at the Albrechtstr intersection). Not sure how packed they are in the winter time. You can see these cafes from your hotel room, ask for a riverview room when you check into Melia, preferably close to the curving corner part of the hotel building. Upgrading to the LEVEL lounge level or at least getting the lounge access is really worth the extra cost. The staff/service at the &quot;LEVEL&quot; club level is very good in contrast to the overwhelmed regular hotel staff

If you walk north of the river and turn right on Oranienburgerstrasse, you'll find several cafes and restaurants for the youngish crowd/tourists. It's one of the lively streets in Prenzlauerberg. The street will take you to Hackescherhoefe which is a series of renovated art deco commercial store buildings with a couple of cafes inside the courts. Rosenthalerstrasse has a simple but lively spanish cafe, doenner kiosk and Starbucks. There are plenty of inexpensive food in Berlin.

The TXL bus stop is at the Unter den Linden intersection corner with Friedrichstrasse. It's a couple of medium size blocks south of Melia, probably about 1000 steps. If you buy the Welcome 3-7 day pass (valid for S&amp;Ubahn/bus) at the airport just before you exit to the bus stops, you can take a bus to the Berlin central station called LEHRTER Station which is a brand new multistory station and common shopping mall open 7 days a week. Get off the bus there and take the S bahn to Friedrichstrasse Station near Melia. It'll give you a more interesting pre-orientation than walking from the Unter den Linden TXL bus stop to Melia.

DAX Dec 2nd, 2007 11:21 AM

I checked the map, the Unter den Linden stop is actually 5 blocks south of Melia.

If you walk east along the Spree river along Weidendamm for 5 blocks taking you to the Bode &amp; Pergamom museum. In the warmer season there is a nice flea market right there along Zeughaus street. You certainly picked a great hotel for its easy walking access to the museum island &amp; Prenzlauerberg as well as the immediate access to Friedrich station across the street.

Hi Thin, I imagine you will soon be leaving for Berlin. I wanted to wish you a beautiful and restful trip. May it bring you everything you are anticipating and needing.

Zeus Dec 2nd, 2007 02:49 PM

Why am I NOT surprised Thingie lives in the Poconos. I assume you're down below The Mountain?

DAX Dec 2nd, 2007 09:48 PM

Just reread my entries and found a typo (among many): It should have been Schiffbauerdamm instead of Schifferbaum.

SuzieC Dec 3rd, 2007 02:06 AM

I'm piping in here as well. Cannot offer any advice as to Berlin, having not been there yet. Anyhow...

Happy Christmas Thin. Rest, heal, laugh...

Catch a big one! I would think fishing on Christmas Eve will be memorable!

marginal_margiela Dec 3rd, 2007 05:21 AM

Thanks for the concern, Loveitaly and Suzie. I will certainly try to enjoy myself.

I don't live in the Poconos.
And don't ever call me Thingie or you will suffer my wrath, you ass.
