Oh, that's such a shame about Tom's Diner. You may try Gruuthuse Hof. That's also very typical, and it gets good reviews on Tripadvisor.

You +1'd this publicly. Undo Enjoy a Holland holiday and stay in a real Dutch bed and breakfast Haarlem home. Yes it is Bot B&b - family named Bot - and it can be a great base for not only Amsterdam - 20 min train ride away but all of Holland - Haarlem is a neat calm old-world looking city and has great train links. Save a few hundred bucks a day over Amsterdam hotels. |
You might also try the B&B Paula http://tinyurl.com/hhdc4 on the west side of Haarlem.

I have some questions about addresses and some buildings in The Hague. For instance, the address for the Peace Palace is Carnegieplein 2, 2517KJ Den Haag. If the 1st part is the street address, what are the following number & Letter combinations? Also, are the Het Binnenhof, Dutch Parliament buildings and the Peace Palace in the same area? I'm confused about the tours offered. The Peace Palace tours are closed from Sept.12-16 according to their website. Does that mean you also cannot go inside any of the Parliament complex? I need to plan out my time in this town. I want to visit the museums Mauritshuis, Escher at the Palace and Panorama Mesdag, watch the sunset at the beach in Scheveningen and photograph some grand buildings like the Paleis Noordeinde and the Parliament Complex. Which others should I see? Thanks to everyone for their help with this trip.

We are in Bruges frequently and always stay here http://www.bruges-bedandbreakfast.be/ but they will be booked for sure. We heard mostly not so nice things of the Hotel Ter Brughe, nice reception area, very worn rooms, paperthin walls... If I were you I would go with the Casselbergh if you can change reservations.

Carnegieplein is the name of the square
2 is the house number 2517KJ is the postal code of that part of Den Haag. Het Binnenhof houses the Dutch parliament. Address is Binnenhof 8a. Carnegieplein and Binnenhof are abt. 2 kms apart. The Peace Palace is closed from 12 upto 16 September because there's a session (don't know if that's the right word) on those dates. |
Thanks for the input on the hotel in Bruges and the explaination of the address system in Den Haag. We may need to use a GPS at some point. In The Hague, From the Peace Palace, is the Madurodam, miniture Holland exibit on the way to Scheveningen Beach area? Also, can someone please explain how to use and pay for the Tram system? I'd like to take it from the Royal Park area to the Peace Palace and out to Scheveningen. You all have been great help.

Madurodam is on the from Carnegieplein to the beach of Scheveningen.
There is a good website for public transport in the Netherlands: http://www.9292.nl/ (unfortunately only in Dutch). You just have to fill in the various addresses. The address of Madurodam is George Maduroplein 1, Den Haag. When I was in Rotterdam and in Amsterdam last month I bought tickets on board of the tram. Tickets are valid for a certain time frame (1 hour is the minimum). I suppose it's the same in Den Haag. |
Thank you MyriamC. Does anyone know if Koblenz's sites are walkable since we won't have a car? Can you get to the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress?
|
Public transport ticketing in NL is in rollover mode. Rotterdam started with the OV-chipkaart a year or so ago. Amsterdam is now using it also. It is due to replace the Strippenkaart throughout the country eventually. I don't know if it has come to The Hague yet. Do an Internet search and/or ask at the tourist office or bus terminal when you arrive.
Buying tickets on the tram is an expensive way to travel. |
@ spaarne
Buying tickets on the tram is the cheapest way for occasional travel. I only needed one ticket. I believe it was 2,50 euro. The cheapest OV chipcard is for 2 hours, which I didn't need. |
We just did a Madrid-Amsterdam-Bruges-Paris trip in August.
While we were in Amsterdam, we did a day trip to Zaan Schans by taking a bus (40 min ride). You can also take the train from Amsterdam Centraal (I believe it is faster), but you would need to walk 10 minutes to get to the windmills. The bus drops you off right in front. We also went to Den Haag another day and took the train from Amsterdam Centraal. We just bought our tickets on the day we were going there. In Amsterdam, we stayed at Hotel Pulitzer, which I highly recommend! In Bruges, we stayed at Relais Oud Huis Amsterdam, also a beautiful historic hotel. |
Thank you again. We will be doing so much walking these 2 weeks, I'm sure a bus straight to the door at Zaan Schans would be nice. MyriamC, I'll check out the transport site you gave too. Bruges was next to impossible to book a room last minute. I checked over 2 1/2 pages of places written on a legal pad before finding one. And may need to try to change it since advice here says the walls are thin at Hotel Ter Brughe. I still have to book my last night before the flight home from Frankfort. I'm excited to get 3 nights in Cochem at Hotel Alte Thorschenke for my Mosel and Rhine base. It was recommended on Fodors. Would Mainz be a close to airport choice for the last night?

Consider the Hotel Aschaffenburger Hof in Aschaffenberg for your last night. http://tinyurl.com/3dhgkqc. It is a few minutes walk to the train station. This is a very pleasant city. I lived there.
|
I lived there but I can't spell it right. What is the difference between ___burg and ___berg?
|
Brugge is an old city, with charming hotels in old buildings, where the inner walls will be thinner than in new buildings. No one had ever heard about insulation or soundproof in the 19th century or earlier!
Anyway, I don't see any complaints about thin walls in the comments on booking.com, and only a few on TA. Take earplugs just in case. |
_Burg means town or fort (English versions are -burgh or -borough)
-Berg means mountain |

Once again, many thanks. I will pack eag plugs.I can't seem to get any of the "door to door" planner sites to work for public transportation. I get error messages or the search function can't find a match for the address or attraction I input. Guess I'll have to rely on the TI offices in each city to supply route info. I have never taken a tram or bus while traveling, we always rent a car. Such a newbie!

Door to door planner: I will try to sort it out for you if you want. I just need the various addresses/attractions. Feel free to email me (my email address is in my profile).
