"AUTOEUROPE" VIRUS ALERT

I remember reading a post recently that AUTOEUROPE's website was affiliated with a virus.<BR>yup...just went to their website and a few minutes later received an e-mail which my NORTON anti-virus software quarantined for virus. "W32.Klinge"

Since this is a fairly popular web site among Fodorites, I think this bears repeating. Proceed at your own peril!<BR><BR>Topper<BR><BR>P.S. This is more than I've probably said in months!

Sadly, is too late of a warning for my e-mail. Its showed up this morning. The way this one shows is it takes over your e-mail address book and send an e-mail message with some stupid title. Please be forewarned some people on this forum already contacted me about getting a cryptic message from my e-mail address.

Rex Apr 23rd, 2002 01:34 PM

I don't know if this is relevant, but I got a message returned to me, purporting to show that he had received a virus (thwarted) from ME. Not possible with web-based e-mail; there is no address book, and nothing resides on my computer. Couldn't send one if I tried; can't catch one either.<BR>

I got the same message, and I got a nasty virus on Thursday or Friday--fortunately my resident computer guru has cleaned it up. An article in our AJC mentioned a virus called KLEZ that made its way around the globe this week.

Nancy Apr 23rd, 2002 08:53 PM

Barb, that virus that you mentioned, w32.klez, I have received twice this week, two separate occasions. I have an antivirus program, but it seems to keep coming back, I must have quarantined it a zillion times. What a pain...

ruth Apr 24th, 2002 04:19 AM

back again..<BR>this one is hitting me big time.<BR>W32.klez at least six times yesterday and early this am.<BR>also got weird phone call at 4:20 am ..(same time as my virus email)...answered phone in a fog and just an almost fax like noise. very odd, indeed.

For Ruth, Barb, Nancy...<BR>Since the 19 of April, I've been "hit" with the virus called Klez, and I didn't go on "autoeurope" web site.<BR><BR>Since then, I receive almost, every day, new contaminated emails (that are beeing recognized by my anti-virus) !<BR><BR>Are you still getting these emails?<BR>

nospam May 3rd, 2002 08:27 AM

I didn't realize that the virus was that widespread. My computer got infected last week by a virus sent from a Rome hotel. It then used my address book to e-mail other people. Strange thing is, the e-mails sent to people in my address book were not from me but from other people in my address book. I immediately updated my Norton but not until the virus had infected several programs. It's such a hassle!

dontwant May 3rd, 2002 09:44 AM

for those of you whose computers got infected...did you download something or get it just by open the email. Asking because I thought a virus can't get into the system unless you download a file? Am I misinformed?

frank May 3rd, 2002 03:32 PM

Stop using microsoft Outlook Express.<BR>Most addressbook viruses target it.<BR>You know it makes sense.<BR>Uninstall it & try Eudora (eg) - its free & better.

I have Outlook Express. Outlook Express has a preview window. I clicked on the offending e-mail to preview it and the virus got into my computer. I didn't have to download anything.

Christina May 8th, 2002 01:47 PM

I asked my computer tech consultant about this recently because I had always thought you had to download a file to get one, also -- he said it used to be that way but now there are some viruses that will infect your computer just within the text of the email without downloading a file. If you know the person and would have opened the mail anyway, there is no prevention. I personally have never gotten one and I have Outlook because I don't do that preview option and I don't open email from people I don't know or that has a suspicious subject line. <BR><BR>I think it's the Preview thing that does it, not having Outlook per se (although I know some viruses are written to target MS code), but it's the same thing as opening an email. I'm the only person in my office who hasn't gotten one and I'm about the only one with Outlook -- the rest have Eudora and they've gotten them because they aren't as cautious as I am.

I would like to reply to the last message :<BR>"...I don't open email from people I don't know... "<BR>From experience, some virus will show up coming from people you know because they take your name from the "person you know" adress book !<BR><BR><BR>

Doug Weller May 9th, 2002 11:13 AM

Get Pegasus (Free) or better yet get TheBat!.<BR>You aren't likely to get a virus from either unless you ignore all their warnings and run an attachment.
