Two more questions:
1) Do hotels generally accomodate kids in the same room (assuming the room is large enough)? I ask because when I look for bookings online, they generally only ask for no. of adults. (I am trying to stick to the Starwood chain as much as possible). 2) Is Munich, the city, generally child friendly? We will be taking early starts and hopefully be poofed out by the evening and plus with kids, we are not really looking for nightlife anyway. But generally speaking, how child friendly are these places? For example, I know smoking in closed places/restaurants is the norm, but we don't like to expose our kids to that. |
The town where the wedding scene was filmed - Mondsee is very nice but nothing special. An amreican friend and I teamed up to join a choral singing course there a few years ago and ended up performing both in the church there and in the Salzburger Dom. We loved Salzburg, abd would have loved to spend morew time there. We did get to go to a lovely chamber concert which was wonderful. St. Wolfgang looked much nicer, for the few hours we had there.
Larry's advice looks pretty good - wish we could come too! |
It is true that everyone travels differently. For me, 5 nights in Munich would be way too many nights. I liked the city but not nearly as much as the surrounding countryside. 2 nights, maybe 3, for me would be plenty. But again that depends on exactly what you would like to do.
I prefered staying outside of Salzburg, but without a car you may be better off staying in Salzburg because of the public transportation options. Larry could probably better answer that for you, as I know nothing about the public transportation. For a family you might be much better off renting an apartment, which are in abundance in the area. They are lovely and generally very inexpensive. The one we stayed at in Schonau had a full bedroom, kitchen, living and dining area, and a huge balcony with magnificent views. All of that for about 40 euro per night. If you are looking for Starwood places, unfortunately I can't help you, but if you would like to consider an apartment here is a decent website: http://www.vacation-apartments.com. >we have a great Eurail deal<
No matter how great you think the Eurail deal is, you really should check point to point fares. If you forgo the Hamburg to Munich leg, you have almost no long distance travel which can justify a railpass. From Austrian Rail, point to point 2nd class tickets from Salzburg to Vienna should be €121,80 for 2 adults and two children (9 & 11). The extra fare for the children would be only €44,90, or €22,45 each (about $29). That is about the only place you are planning where the children will cost anything if you buy point to point tickets. Children under 15 ride free with their parents on German Rail. I certainly wouldn't buy railpasses for them. For the other legs you seem to be planning, no day should cost more than €25 for all four of you if you use Bayern passes. Munich to Garmisch-Partenkirchen or to Füssen takes no longer with the Bayern pass because it is all regional trains anyway. Munich to Salzburg takes one half hour longer (2:00 vs. 1:30) by regional rail. Munich to Rothenburg takes about an hour longer. |
