Anyone want assistance finding airfares?

If anyone wants some research done on airfares, I might be able to point you to some pretty specific fares.

Not a travel agent but 12 years of planning and booking all my own world travels online has me with a stable of tricks and tools to sniff out low fares.

Rigarama Nov 23rd, 2007 03:03 PM

How about N. Europe to Fort Myers Fla., in mid-February. 2 adults, 2 kids

Thanks

Tim

casanic Nov 23rd, 2007 03:17 PM

Would love help! Right now I'm in a "waiting mode", hoping prices go down in January. I need airfare from Newark to Rome on 5/31 with a return from Milan to EWR on 6/13--

thanks for any assistance--

cindy

Aramis Nov 23rd, 2007 04:53 PM

casanic;

Pretty specific - which is good for me to search with, but it makes real deal finding tough.

If you can leave from JFK Aer Lingus is showing $981 with a stop in Dublin.

If you need EWR,it's about $1270
or $1143 if you can move your dates 1 day forward

Aramis Nov 23rd, 2007 04:58 PM

Rigarama;

That is a little too vague.

One way? Northern Europe is pretty large. Name an airport and a radius to consider other airports.

txjewel Nov 23rd, 2007 05:08 PM

Aramis, I am planning a trip to London from Houston 7/8/08 to 7/22/08. In your experience when is the best time to book the airfare? I noticed that last week Continental's fares were cheaper than this week. Thanks!

Brahmama Nov 23rd, 2007 10:03 PM

Aramis,
I have a challenge for you.
DFW to CAI
CAI to IST
IST to Cappadocia
Cap to IST
IST to Bucharest
PRG to DFW

(No flight needed between Bucharest & Prague - going on the train)

This is for May. Thanks for offering.

Rigarama Nov 24th, 2007 12:32 AM

As far as I can tell there are few direct international flights to Ft Myers.

I live in Riga, Latvia and while there is a weekly Uzbek Air connection to NY, I accept that I will need to fly to a European hub before heading West.

Paris, Frankfurt, Heathrow etc. are all within three hours of here thus giving some flexibility at this end.

The trip will be return, with one week in US.

Thanks

Tim

Hi Cas,

www.kayak.com has JFK/Rome-Milan/JFK for your dates on Iberia - 1 stop - for $943.

Aramis:

I would love your help!

We are two. Depart April 26, Saturday, from JFK to Naples.

Return Naples to JFK on Sunday May 4.

We want routings that require only one connection.

Preferably partners of either Air France or Iberia.

Do not need the absolute cheapest fare..looking for relatively good price and good connections.

Aramis Nov 24th, 2007 05:12 AM

Aramis Nov 24th, 2007 05:29 AM

Brahmama:

6 segments and no dates?

Are you trying to make me have a seizure?

Your request is more than a challenge and I don't think my resources are up to it, you r trip is probably the poster child for a travel agent.

If you can be more specific I can at least give you something to compare to.

Brahmama Nov 24th, 2007 06:12 AM

Dear Aramis,
It is overwhelming, isn't it! THat's why I turned to you.
I can only find 4 segments and if I try for 5, it spits it out.

Here are the dates:

May 4 DFW to CAI
May 9 CAI to IST

May 9 IST to CAP(This is the hard part for me - getting to Cappadocia on the 9th in the late morning/early afternoon)
Returning May 12 CAP to IST

May 16 IST to BUH
May 29 PRG to DFW

Maybe this will help a bit.

Aramis Nov 24th, 2007 06:29 AM

Brahmama:

Would you leave Cairo at 4;10 a.m.?

That gets you into Istanbul at about 9;)) and then Turkish Airlines can get you to Erkilet (closest airport to Cappadocia) on a 1;15 flight that arrives at 2:20 p.m.m

Do you have a budget for this because - yikes it is going to be up there.

Rigarama Nov 24th, 2007 09:01 AM

Looks good. Thanks a lot.

Tim

Brahmama Nov 24th, 2007 09:02 AM

Yes....I know.....But we have to get there.

4:10 AM YIKES! I don't think so. I don't dare even mention that to my DH! He thinks I'm crazy for trying to work Cappadocia in here but I had to try.

Thanks for trying!

Aramis Nov 24th, 2007 09:31 AM

Rigarama;

If you want other dates, I can see if the cost goes up or not, and I can get you specific booking codes to give to a travel agent. Let me know.

I never thought my first "success" would be Riga - Ft. Myers!

lauraallais Nov 24th, 2007 10:07 AM

I have an airfare question. I'm looking for flights to Paris in May (from N. California). I keep hearing about a price dip in January. Does this dip really happen, or should I buy now?

Thanks much,
Laura

Cimbrone Nov 24th, 2007 10:12 AM

This is a very nice offer! If you know the tricks you say you do, this could prove to be the longest thread in Fodor's history.

How about Zurich to Brussels on the afternoon of 2 August 2008, returning on the evening of 3 August?

ekscrunchy Nov 24th, 2007 10:19 AM

Aramis that is very kind of you! I figured that the IBeria flights from JFK to Naples with connection in Madrid would be the best and you confirmed that! The price of $945....do you think I ought to book that now?

I will take a look at the flights just to make sure about the connection times.....

Many many thanks!!

ira Nov 24th, 2007 12:37 PM

Hi A,

What can you come up with for

ATL/ZRH May 14
CDG/ATL June 6
Nonstop both ways?

((I))

ekscrunchy Nov 24th, 2007 12:56 PM

Aramis..

The only glitch I see with those Iberia flights from JFK to Naples are that there is a connection time of 1 hour 10 minutes on the return through Madrid...and that new airport is BIG!

YOur thoughts on this?

Most appreciative of your assistance!

bonniem Nov 24th, 2007 01:03 PM

My sister and my 80 year old mother are looking at traveling to Italy in July from Detroit. My son and I will meet them there and will be flying from Idaho or SLC. Any help would be appreciated....

gracejoan3 Nov 24th, 2007 01:05 PM

Aramis,

Doubt that you can help with mine..
AVL/CDG 4/15
CDG/AVL 4/30

Thanks.........

bmad Nov 24th, 2007 01:32 PM

I'm looking for flights to Croatia around June 23rd - July 2nd, for my family, 6 in all, into Split and out of Dubrovnik. The best price I've found is over $1500. Any suggestions for a lower fare would be appreciated! Thanks

ekscrunchy Nov 24th, 2007 01:40 PM

BMAD: You do not mention your departure point.

BonnieM: You do not mention which city in Italy.

bmad Nov 24th, 2007 01:41 PM

Sorry about that, it's EWR.

Thanks!

markrosy Nov 24th, 2007 01:41 PM

A pitch in along the lines of Aramis' sentiments - anyone out there coming to Europe can use a long haul operator to get to any European hub then use Skycscanners.com to get to obscure places in Europe VERY cheaply.

Skyscanners is a site that integrates with most low cost flight companies and frequently directs you to return flight for less than 70 euros.

Good luck everyone

nancy1652 Nov 24th, 2007 03:01 PM

I just got a $707 fare from San Francisco to Rome in March from airlineconsolidator.com I think this is an outstanding fare. One stop in Frankfurt but only 1:40 hours between connections and the total flight time is 13 hours.

Thought someone might want to check this out.

bonniem Nov 24th, 2007 05:09 PM

We are looking at either FCO or FLR sometime in July and spending most time in Tuscany (from SLC and DTW)

Lily Nov 24th, 2007 05:32 PM

Hey Aramis, lots of enquiries! You already helped me but I didn't have my specific dates and now I do. May 29th Toronto to Athens returning June 16th. What do you think?

Saraho Nov 24th, 2007 05:37 PM

ttt

Aramis Nov 25th, 2007 05:53 AM

Cimbrone:

It doesn't look like there are any discount carriers on this route so pricing seems high and rpobably consistently high, at about $370 US.

Aramis Nov 25th, 2007 05:58 AM

ira:

Right now I can get $1056 on Delta - nonstop - you can book it on Expedia.

For one stop, you can take Air Canada through Toronto at about $950

Aramis Nov 25th, 2007 06:01 AM

eks:

1:10 is a little tight, but since it is all on Iberia and through their home airport, I would do it.

They posted the connection so they are obliged to complete, albeit on a later flight if something delays the flight out of Naples.

Aramis Nov 25th, 2007 06:07 AM

gracejoan:

$937 on Delta

idaninalevy Nov 25th, 2007 06:08 AM

I would love help- but i am using Alitalia frequent flyer miles. Newark, NJ or JFK both ways.
3/23 to Rome or Venice
3/31 return from the one I didnt fly into.
Thanks!!

idaninalevy Nov 25th, 2007 06:09 AM

I can fly Continental, too

Aramis Nov 25th, 2007 06:18 AM

markrosy is correct about Skyscanner being the best place to search for connecting flights within Europe - it is Skyscanner.net, not .com though.

Here is how it works - you book the cheapest flight you can into London, Paris Frankfurt, whatever - you have to be creative and look around - and then look for flights from you
selected European landing hub to where you want to go.

I have even chosen where i was going to go based on the results of flights found on Skyscanner.net

Be careful about arport changes, however, a lot of the budget European flights are out of secondary airports and changing airports can be a hassle. however, if there is budget flight on the routs, there is often enough competition to keep the price down on the primary airlines for the route - skyscanner does a good job in showing primary carriers too, but you might want to double check with the carriers site or Expedia directly.

Also, booking your flights this way effectively gives you a FREE stopover in your hub city. Book your flight into and out of London and you can stop for however long you want in London before taking your London - wherever intra-European flight.
This will very often turn out to be the cheapest way to get somewhere in Europe from N. America.

One final caveat - once you break up your flights, the carriers are no longer responsible for getting you out on the next flight. If your skyscanner booked flight is late and you miss your London - home connection a s aresult, you are going to have to dance with the london-home carrier about how you are to get back. Plan accordingly if you do this and leave long layover times.
