I think that it's probably closer than you think, Sarah. I can't give you precise times or distances, but be sure to cross the Pont des Arts. This will offer you nice views of both banks of the Seine. Once you cross it you're on the Left Bank by the Academie Francaise. You can take r. de Seine or r. Mazarine. There'll be art galleries.

At one point you'll hit Boulevard St.-Germain.

It's probably not the best route or the most direct route, but I've walked over this way a couple of times.

If you're heading to the Latin Quarter, this is definitely not the best way. I'll probably need to take a look at a web. But you can probably take a slight detour and see place Dauphine (a triangular square named after the heir ("Dauphin" in French), the son of Henri IV, and also Notre Dame and Ste-Chapelle.

I really think that it'll be pretty convenient and you'll enjoy walking all over the city.

The rue de Turbigo is quite a distance from the Latin Quarter; in fact, it's on the other side of the river, near the Forum des Halles at its lower end.

The strike will not affect the Métro as it is only an SNCF (national railways) strike. Besides, you can get anywhere in Paris on foot, although it takes longer. From the Latin Quarter to the rue de Turbigo takes about 50 minutes.

It is comprehensive, has lots of audio files (online dictionary & Mot du jour with sound files for individual word, plus conversational sound files to practice listening.)You can sign up for emails to receive daily instruction links. It is fun, easy and FREE! I use it as an addendum to classes and a very useful resource.

It has a few lessons that you can do for the French section. I've been fooling around with the Japanese and Chinese section, and the only way I can get by on both is by the characters....
