Anyone know any good online French Language tutorials?
I am looking for an online sight that provides audio. Ideally I would like to be able to do a search and look up pronunciation. Free would be nice too!
|
Any one?
|
oh, I'm sure someone will have something -- I think the BBC has one, actually, and I posted the URL before. I'll have to find it
|
My husband borrowed Pimsleur's CDs from the library -- they have an excellent reputation and are quite expensive to buy, but that's one of the best. When we went to Paris his conversational French came in very handy, and he learned a lot.

Here's the link I was thinking of
http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/french/index.shtml They have a lot of interesting stuff on there, including audio files of common phrases. Not sure if that's what you want, but I don't think you will find an online audio version of every word in a dictionary. The about.com website has a very good series of language articles, also (not only French), including some summaries about pronunciation, I think. Here is the link I found on their site for resources on audio. I'm actually quite impressed with everything they've got, and it looks like there is a complete audio dictionary on there, even if the word count is clearly not as much as a real dictionary (which would be around 50-70K words). http://french.about.com/od/listening/ |
French in Action, an excellent PBS series, is now available on line--free.
|
Underhill, could you be so kind as to post a link to the free online version of French In Action? I could definitely use that old series now and again for my high school French students.
|
Ah, French in Action. That brings back undergraduate memories!! Mireille and her jupe rouge. All the boys in the class liked Mireille's sweaters...

French in Action:

Try www.frenchtutorial.com
I bookmarked it for future reference but have not really had time yet to look into it that closely. Hope this helps. |
Marking for future reference.

Rosetta Stone (which is expensive to purchase outright) now offers monthly subscriptions. One month of Levels 1 and 2 (combined; the only way to do it) is US $49.95, 3 months is $89.95.
|
I spent some time at the listed bbc site last night and found it valuable. Maybe my high school French teacher was right - I wasn't spending anytime practicing (hmm hard to remember)!
|
Thanks everyone....I am using a berlitz book and tape but its always nice to augment this type of thing with more than one source.
|
The French in Action site that I use is:

Hi letour! :-) I want to see what your website looked like (if it was real French talking for ex) and when I clicked on the video it said "Due to licensing agreements, viewing of the video French in Action - Physical Characteristics II is restricted to network connections in the United States and Canada. Your connection appears to be based outside this area."
it is unfair! :-(( now what about the other ones... |
That's interesting. It's too bad you can't get it, coco, as that series is very good.
By the way, can you recommend some good RFI programs to listen to on the web? |
I mostly listen to French music radios or English ones to improve my poor English...
there are a few here from all over the world : http://www.tevader.com/autres/radio.html If you're fluent in French try "Rire et Chansons" with comic performers. |
I'm not fluent at all. But I'll put on that streaming radio and pretend I am. :-)

hi 11OP
I am heading off to the Bellevue on Rue de Turbigo(sp?) Starting to worry about the distance from st. Germain, Latin quarter. I am going to be there during a train strike. I hate not having a sense of central Paris, also most hotels are booked. Do you have any reassuring words for me (worried face with praying hands here(if I knew how to create) |
[I take you out of your regularly scheduled programming to respond to Sarah:]
I think that it's probably closer than you think, Sarah. I can't give you precise times or distances, but be sure to cross the Pont des Arts. This will offer you nice views of both banks of the Seine. Once you cross it you're on the Left Bank by the Academie Francaise. You can take r. de Seine or r. Mazarine. There'll be art galleries. At one point you'll hit Boulevard St.-Germain. It's probably not the best route or the most direct route, but I've walked over this way a couple of times. If you're heading to the Latin Quarter, this is definitely not the best way. I'll probably need to take a look at a web. But you can probably take a slight detour and see place Dauphine (a triangular square named after the heir ("Dauphin" in French), the son of Henri IV, and also Notre Dame and Ste-Chapelle. I really think that it'll be pretty convenient and you'll enjoy walking all over the city. Enjoy the trip. When are you leaving? |
|
"take a look at a web"
Sorry -- at a map. |
Good question, and thank you Christina and others for posting these wonderful websites!
|
The rue de Turbigo is quite a distance from the Latin Quarter; in fact, it's on the other side of the river, near the Forum des Halles at its lower end.
The strike will not affect the Métro as it is only an SNCF (national railways) strike. Besides, you can get anywhere in Paris on foot, although it takes longer. From the Latin Quarter to the rue de Turbigo takes about 50 minutes. |
je vous en prie

Sarah, take a look at Laura K. Lawless' entire "Learn French" section at about.com. It is comprehensive, has lots of audio files (online dictionary & Mot du jour with sound files for individual word, plus conversational sound files to practice listening.)You can sign up for emails to receive daily instruction links. It is fun, easy and FREE! I use it as an addendum to classes and a very useful resource.
|
Sarah, here is the web address - http://french.about.com/
|
I would give: http://www.voyages-sncf.com/trafic/g...ations_gl.html a shot. It's a demo of what the real registered version is like (I think you can register online). It has a few lessons that you can do for the French section. I've been fooling around with the Japanese and Chinese section, and the only way I can get by on both is by the characters....

Here's some useful phrases to get you started:

HAHAHAHAHAH
Rufus, that was too funny! |
Very useful. Thanks!
|
This is the best that I have found on the web total immersion by Yale University and Pierre Capritz.
Also get French with Michel Thomas 8 cd set- Very good for English speakers. http://www.learner.org/resources/series83.html# |
"Je vous aurais bien aide, mais je ne vous aime pas."
"Ces poissons, ils sont mort d'irradiation?" Hah, hah, hah. Just cracks me up. Hah. |
Rufus even my kids laughed at it, really funny!=D> (and it is good for my English as well!)
But I still wonder if it is a real French correction. (accents are not put on every word they should be)Réalité is feminine : LA réalité et toi, vous ne vous entendez pas, n'est-ce pas?" and what happened to the "s" in "ils sont mortS "? "Tu me pèles le jonc" is very rude (especially for a lady)it is very sexual! I really enjoyed this one but didn't get the ones with the grenouille! |
Coco: "I mostly listen to French music radios or English ones to improve my poor English." I personally know your English is VERY good. Though learning a new word now & then is fun. :)
Isadore204 |
:-x you're too sweet with me!
I was about to answer your email... Everyone you know what? Isadore celebrated her 20th birthday ((^)) 2 days ago!!! ((G)) all together ((8))"JOYEUX ANNIVERSAIRE!!!"((8)) ((d)) |
Here's another way that I was trying to pick up some French that perhaps everyone knows about. It's a set of four or five French internet tv stations and can be found at:
http://www.wi-fitv.com/sectional.php?channel=48 I'm also renting borrowing alot of French movies which I am delighted to discover that I can play on my computer! Coco: C'est dommage! French in Action est formidable! M. Capretz etait mon prof. Ciaou! |
