If the straps are detachable then you won't have to worry about them. However, if you go to where the airports handle larger pieces of luggage, you can have the backpack shrinkwrapped, therefore protecting the straps and the contents of your backpack. Just call the airport in advance to find out where this area is located.

You'll find that when you enter nearly every airport in Europe at your departure you will see passengers standing in line to get both their backpacks and luggage shrinkwrapped. It only costs a few dollars.

I suggest that you go to REI or EMS, if you have one nearby and check with the sales staff. You'll want something that is lightweight, preferably expandable, and that has big straps, including one that wraps around your waist. You'll also one want that is made out of tear resistant nylon, with big zippers. One of the other neat features are the ones that have inline skating wheels on them, so you can pull the backpack.

Most of all, you need to determine how much you will be taking with you, and that will then determine the size of the backpack that you want to buy.
