We too stayed at Brouwer on Single last week. It's very basic, but clean, with a view of the canal and a very good breakfast. 95 euros for two. However, it is on the edge of the red light district (parts of it are around the corner and there a few windows you pass when you walk from the train station.) I tried for the Brouwer seeing as it was so highly recommended but it was full for my dates (late May 2008). Lots of other possibilities touted here were full too.
So I hunted around, googling like mad, and found somewhere for 60 euros a night single. 60 euros is outside my budget normally (even in London) but I booked late, and Amsterdam is expensive. Now I don't know what the rate for a double was (you could check their website) but let us assume it is around the 80 euro mark. How does that translate to usd at the moment? Haven't a clue as I'm not a usd earner. Must be c. 100usd surely? The place I found was Hotel Washington, and I was very happy with it. Trams run to within 100 metres and only 10-15 mins from the centre; you can walk from there to the Riksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum. The room was small (OK with me - I am a small person, and you are only there to sleep, after all!). It had a lovely comfy bed, window, TV and kettle. Nice new bathroom. Excellent breakfast. But then I see you are posting on 6 Oct 08 and are talking about August - 2009 one assumes? Or is it 2010? So if you are booking this far in advance you will have the pick of what's going in that price range. |
It is sometimes cheaper to stay outside the centre and use tram/train/bus to get in daily. Hotels throughout the Netherlands are pretty expensive I think.

The cheapest hotel option i believe for Amsterdam would be the Formula I near Zaandam - direct bus from Amsterdam CS train station - rooms around 35 euros i think
www.accorhotels.com - i've stayed there and there are frequent buses that take about 30 mins. The hotel is romantically situated right next to a crematorium |
