American Express ad

Do the American Express ads on Fodors irritate anyone else? I am getting ticked off seeing that louvered window open and close every second.

Voyager2006 Oct 22nd, 2005 09:33 AM

Would you prefer to PAY to post here and generate even more revenue for the company?

francophile03 Oct 22nd, 2005 09:39 AM

Did I say that? I'm just saying the ads are irritating.

bronxzilla Oct 22nd, 2005 09:44 AM

I guess it is to be expected that someone with the handle "francophile03" would be against free-market capitalism

*ducks*

ira Oct 22nd, 2005 10:35 AM

Hi F,

Do you have a popup blocker?

I'm not getting those ads.

((I))

LoveItaly Oct 22nd, 2005 10:56 AM

I think the AMEX is rather interesting. On my screen it is not a popup ad, it is just on the right side of my screen. It is when the Marriott ad does popup and covers the screen that I get annoyed, especially since I am not fond of the Mariott hotels anyway.

L84SKY Oct 22nd, 2005 11:03 AM

Just like commercials on television, I hardly notice them.

cigalechanta Oct 22nd, 2005 11:13 AM

I think this is the first time I've seen Peter here?

JeanneB Oct 22nd, 2005 11:26 AM

I'm not seeing it either. All I'm getting is a Delta ad on the right side.

panhandle Oct 22nd, 2005 12:31 PM

yep I have the Marriott ad as well and it slides over and covers up part of the posts for a few seconds...very annoying. Actually I would rather pay a modest fee.

AnselmAdorne Oct 22nd, 2005 12:53 PM

Animated ads make me cranky and help me to decide not to buy or use whatever is being advertised.

FlyerTalk, another board I haunt, offers two versions. For a small annual fee, you see no ads.

Anselm

francophile03 Oct 22nd, 2005 01:18 PM

Bronxzilla, it seems to me you have something personal against me.

LoveItaly Oct 22nd, 2005 01:22 PM

Hi francophile, I think Peter was joshing you, note his "ducks"..sometimes humor does not always comes across as well with the written word as it can in speaking face to face. And sometimes it doesn't face to face either.

I have had that darn Mariott ad back again the last few minutes. Very very irritating!! And that is no joke!!

francophile03 Oct 22nd, 2005 01:25 PM

I don't get his types of jokeless jokes at all. Thanks LoveItaly for pointing that out. I guess I could have responded 'I guess it is to be expected that someone with the handle "bronxzilla"...'

bronxzilla Oct 22nd, 2005 02:49 PM

I could seriously argue that the Bronx has contributed more to world culture than France. Maybe some other day....

rex Oct 22nd, 2005 03:03 PM

I think it was an ad hominem attack - - a cornerstone example of what Fodors says it does not want to tolerate - - and here ot is, from the voice of Fodors.

I'm sure that a post soon will be placed here to say that this discussion needs to be carried over to the News and Announcements "forum". Wher it is out of sight, and out of mind.

It feels like we have a new student teacher aasigned to go "deal with the kids causing trouble out on the playground". And lo and behold, the student tracher is the newest participant in the spitball throwing.

Best wishes,

Rex

bronxzilla Oct 22nd, 2005 03:10 PM

rex: clearly you failed to see the intended humor in my post. If you can't make fun of France's statist economy, then most topics are going to be off limits.

I beseech thee to chill out,
Peter

LoveItaly Oct 22nd, 2005 04:57 PM

Hi francophile, I have a young cousin (quite the computer expert btw) that has Peter's sense of humor. But I must say that most people do not get his jokes. And then his feeling are hurt.

Having said that I will say that I do not enjoy having a Fodor employee jump into the threads in the manner that we have been seeing lately however. Sorry Peter!

tuscanlifeedit Oct 22nd, 2005 05:48 PM

The Marriott ad is driving me crazy, and it isn't a long trip. I too would pay to get rid of that nasty thing spreading all over the postings I'm trying to read. It is the most irritating thing.

francophile03 Oct 22nd, 2005 07:36 PM

Is he a Fodors employee? Then he should adhere to the same policies as the rest of us if he chooses to post comments. Sounds like a conflict of interest somewhere.

StCirq Oct 22nd, 2005 08:16 PM

I have a Pop-up blocker and I STILL get those damn Amex and Marriott things interfering with my viewing of Fodor's posts. What's up with that? I have every McAfee service known to mankind on my computer as well as several pop-up blockers and they still show up.l Help!

platzman Oct 23rd, 2005 05:40 AM

Ever since installing Symentec firewall (plus the virus protection), I NEVER get pop-ups.

Christina Oct 23rd, 2005 02:31 PM

I hate the Marriott ad, also, as it blocks posts. I do see the Amex ad, but it doesn't bother me because it isn't animated. At least not the one I see right now. I think the only ad on Fodors I've disliked is the Marriott one. I generally don't care about any of the ads when they just stay still.

tuscanlifeedit Oct 23rd, 2005 02:41 PM

Im with you, Christina. I understand why there are ads, but when they cover the posts, that seems out of hand.

francophile03 Oct 23rd, 2005 04:19 PM

The Amex ad I'm referring to is not the traditional popup type unless it is a popup as I am not computer literate. There are two Amex ads, but the one I'm getting is the one of an aqua colored louvered window that is animated with the window opening and closing. I don't know if anyone but me is seeing this ad. It's on the right of the screen as the other Amex ad.

AnselmAdorne Oct 23rd, 2005 04:25 PM

francophile, I get the same Amex ad.

Just another good reason to stay with Visa.

Anselm

francophile03 Oct 23rd, 2005 04:41 PM

Hehe, well, okay that's another reason to go with Visa, yes. :) I am ready to shout 'Keep the stupid louver closed!' But it's Fodor's decision. I'll try to ignore it in the meantime.

DiG Oct 23rd, 2005 05:11 PM

Yes, please keep the louvred window shut!!!
Marriott rewards program I'll take cuz I've earned it but never asked for it to cover my screen/posts continously.

Don't know what's up, as I'm with St Cirq. I have everything I possible need to avoid these situations.

Guess I'll check out platzman's technology.

icithecat Oct 23rd, 2005 05:51 PM

I have bookmarked and open directly to this.
http://www.fodors.com/forums/threadselect.jsp?fid=2
I see no Mariot ads.

What am I doing differently?
