Amazing Race!

I happenned to notice on the CBS website that they now are accepting applications for the next Amazing Race. The deadline is October 8th. I'm glad to see it will be around another season........

Louise Sep 15th, 2003 04:47 PM

That's great. I had heard no one picked it up for another season.

lyb Sep 15th, 2003 06:21 PM

Yeah!!!!!! Can't wait to see it!

sandi Sep 16th, 2003 04:07 AM

In the TV Guide (Sept 13-19) in the Jeers & Cheers - the following:

"Jeers" - to playing favorites, CBS can't seem to give The Amazing Race the respect it deserves. While the network fawns over Survivor; with endless promotions and crossover appearances, Race hadn't gotten a renewal commitment even after a finale that drew an amazing 9.88 million viewers. The Amazing Race invariably provides intelligent, compelling tests of human relationships under stress. CBS has a real winner here - why is it treated like such a big loser?

Nice to know CBS is accepting applications, but what's going on here? Is it a go or not?

nickn Sep 16th, 2003 07:54 AM

Which 2 fodorites would you want to see in the race? :-)

Mathieu Sep 16th, 2003 09:14 AM

Yes, that's great news that they're planning on an AR5. I was on the CBS website yesterday and saw the application forms there by chance; even e-mailed them to a couple of intrepid friends but they declined ! I'd apply in a flash but don't qualify for not being a US citizen.

I too think that this show is hugely short-changed for all that it is (and 'The Mole' was another good show that falls into this category). Unfortunately, there are too many willing to exploit and capitalize on displaying the tawdry aspects of human nature in artifical circumstances (shows such as Survivor, Big Brother, and loads of newer nonsense) to the detriment of other shows more deserving of the attention. However, lets hope that The Amazing Race wins an Emmy this Sunday and changes all of that. Go AR !

Thought this might be of interest. I'm hoping AR5 happens!

CBS begins accepting applications for 'The Amazing Race 5'

By RealityTVWorld Staff, 09/15/2003

Although a formal series renewal has yet to be announced, CBS has officially begun accepting applications for a fifth edition of "The Amazing Race." Those interested in applying had better be quick however, as the application states that applications are due Wednesday, October 8 2003 for an anticipated January 2004 taping.

Daily Variety notes that while the move is not the same thing as an official series order, it's still a very good sign for Race fans. According to Variety, CBS traditionally only lets its reality producers begin casting when there's a solid shot of a pickup or renewal, particularly when it comes to existing franchises.

The application news comes a couple of months after CBS chairman and CEO Les Moonves expressed doubt as to whether a fifth edition of the Emmy-nominated series would be produced, due to the show's continuing less-than-blockbuster ratings.

My sister and I have applied for AR5. We've been wanting to be on this show since it started. The funny thing is, we just found out yesterday that the applications had been opened back up and I leave for Europe on Thursday and won't be back until after the deadline on Oct. 8. So we have to put together our application REALLY quickly last night--including shooting our video.

We'll see . . .

Jennie :)

QueenMab Sep 16th, 2003 10:06 AM

LOL Jennie: we are in the same boat! Just found out today (on this board, of course!) that apps are open, and we're leaving Friday for 3 weeks. I don't know whether we'll get it together (we don't own a video camera), but my sweetie and I would sure love to give it a try. Maybe we'll end up competing against you and your sister!

Re: Which 2 fodorites would you want to see in the race?

Although he's not a Fodorite (as far as I know), I'd love to see Jacques Chirac and Uncle Sam (whatever happened to him, anyway?) as a team. Just imagine the conflict! :)

Jennie Sep 16th, 2003 11:34 AM

Queen Mab, that's funny! I love it.
Can you imagine the battle of the Fodorites? Ha-Ha!

Good luck whatever you decide to do and have a wonderful and safe trip!

Jennie

Mathieu...re "The Mole".....did you read what happened to Anderson Cooper while he was in Europe filing?Do you know who he is?

Mathieu Sep 16th, 2003 12:55 PM

BeachBoi : All I know is that he is a Vanderbilt and he's back reporting for CNN. No, what happend to him in Europe ? I recently read an article he'd written talking about the pain and sadness in coping with his brother's suicide.

BeachBoi Sep 16th, 2003 01:42 PM

He is Gloria Vanderbilt's son, she lives with him in Manhattan. While he was in Europe during the filing, a thief got into 2 of his bank accounts and made off with around $35K....Carter Cooper did not commit suicide...he awoke from a fitful nap following an unusually strong dose of asthmas medication...he was delirious..but he could not hold onto the railing..that was in 19988 at the age of 23..

wondering Sep 16th, 2003 04:07 PM

i'd like to see nycfoodsnob on the amazing race

bmillersc Sep 16th, 2003 04:18 PM

If I could only convince my wife to do this...she'd make great TV. Alas, she says she doesn't want to become "notorious!"

Giovanna Sep 16th, 2003 04:36 PM

Capo:

"....Uncle Sam (whatever happened to him, anyway?)"

Don't question his absence, just enjoy it!

MichelleY Sep 17th, 2003 01:04 PM

The website: tarflies.com has names and addresses of CBS and sponsors of the Amazing Race in order write and show support. Check it out.

mmr41 Sep 17th, 2003 01:57 PM

nickn -- the only answer to your question is NYCFS paired with PCHsmiles

jor Sep 17th, 2003 02:22 PM

capo, Excellent idea! Or just pair up Sam with Anybody and watch the fireworks.

capo Sep 17th, 2003 02:52 PM

Thanks, Jor. But I'm not so sure about fireworks between Uncle Sam and anybody. Seems to me he'd get along quite well, philosophically & politically anyway, with Snoopy, for example. They both seem to detest the word "liberal."

Giovanna Sep 21st, 2003 10:58 PM

Came in tonight expecting to see a post about the Amazing Race winning an Emmy, but scrolling down the first 50 didn't find anything. So thought I would be the first to say HOORAY!! Hope that this will encourage a sponsorto back them and we will have another Amazing Race.

sandi Sep 22nd, 2003 02:12 AM

Giovanna -

I practically jumped out of bed when they won. My first thought was "now CBS has to keep this going & who's going to be the first to post it?"

Unfortunately, I was too comfy under the covers to post. So thank you for doing so - and here I am at 6:12am raving the win.

capo Sep 22nd, 2003 10:18 AM

The Amazing Race won an Emmy, eh? I second your "Hooray!" Giovanna. The show deserves that, and thanks for mentioning it.

MichelleY Sep 22nd, 2003 11:50 AM

Yehhhh!!! The best show won!! The TV critic in the newspaper couldn't understand how a show that nobody watches won over Survivor or American Idol --- because it is fun and unpredictable.

BTilke Sep 22nd, 2003 11:55 AM

For those of us who live in Europe and don't get the show...what is it?

aquaman Sep 22nd, 2003 12:08 PM

BTilke:

It's a show where (someone correct me) 12 couples have a race around the world, starting and ending on US soil.

This year, the race started in LA, then off to Cortina then on to Vienna, France, etc. This year, the race also went through India, Australia, Korea, Hawaii...

At each location, there is usually a stunt or competition the teams must complete before they can get the next clue and continue the race. It is very exciting and always full of reality-TV drama and tension.

They are given a clue as to where they have to go next. The last team to arrives at that location

Shanna Sep 22nd, 2003 12:10 PM

I never watch award shows so didn't know Amazing Race won an emmy! Fantastic! BTilke, the Amazing Race involves several couples of varying - well, varying everything, age, sex, etc., going around the world with tests of skill, endurance, brainpower, and sheer tenacity. The winner of each segment (arriving first at the final location for that segment) gets a special prize - usually a trip somewhere, although after this adventure, I don't know if they will ever want to leave home again! The tests are incredible and the locations marvelous. It gives a peek into different countries and cultures, just enough to make this fan wish she was along for the ride! And one reason I like it compared to the other reality shows, the contestants, while not always the nicest folks you'd ever want to meet, don't appear to be interested in serious sabotage; just winning. It elevates the competition a bit. On this last show, the couples had to feed alligators, hit targets with arrows, find clues under piles of manure, grab fish out of traps, swing around on a windmill and they always have to figure out the best way to get "there" from "here" - it's very clever and exciting. Can't wait for the next show!

aquaman Sep 22nd, 2003 12:11 PM

whooops, incomplete reply...

the last team to reach that week's location is sent home, therebby reducing the number of competing teams by one. The final episode is usually a race to the finish between the two or three final teams.

This year's race was won by a gay couple (yay, us!), Chip and Reichen. Do a search on google.com for "chip reichen" and you can read all about it.

Here's a link to the CBS website regarding TAR's most recent season:

Mariarosa Sep 30th, 2003 05:49 AM

Its official! CBS has given the go-ahead for a 5th season of TAR!

Giovanna Sep 30th, 2003 08:00 AM

Thanks for the good news Mariarosa. Had my fingers crossed and thought maybe the Emmy would clinch the deal. Look forward to seeing it this summer.

Barbara Sep 30th, 2003 08:47 AM

Have you looked at the application? Anyone who fills it in correctly deserves a prize!

Mathieu Sep 30th, 2003 10:04 AM

Add my "Hoorays!" to the list.

However, I'm just hoping that someone at CBS will read our last long thread on the Amazing Race and consider some changes to the format of the show to make it even more exciting. The first season had different (albeit harder and more costly to the producers) rules which they discarded in the next 3 seasons with a corresponding drop in viewers. This is a great opportunity for CBS to tweak this show and stop the routine from going stale. As I've attested before, it is my favourite reality show and I was bowled-over when they won the deserved emmy. Don't botch it now, CBS.

(I tried to post my comments on the CBS website with no luck. Couldn't get to the comments page).

BeachBoi Oct 1st, 2003 08:11 AM

THEY'VE SPLIT!!!!!!!!! Just announced on the official C/R website..AllAbout Reichen and Chip....they are seperating...not too many details but a lot of hope...
