I'm older senior lady. I have posted a couple of questions. Tell me, seriously, am I in a chat room? I never thought I would be!

I was about to say the same. I think the difference is that a chat room has people online at the same time "chatting", but on this board, you simply leave a message and hope that someone answers it at a future time (which can be very quickly indeed!).

But you should be proud nonetheless! :D

Its not a chat room as such; as others have said but feel free to chat, responses here are usually quite rapid depending upon the time of day you post. So it's a bit like a chat room.

I applaude you as a senior person you will get a lot of enjoyment from this forum. Post away

Thank you for all your nice answers. So, for bragging's sake, I could tell my friends I'm on a chat room, right? :-} I really enjoy reading all the comments on different subjects. You know, a person just has to stay up on all this technology, etc. It is exhausting sometimes. I still haven't figured out the voice mail on my cellphone.

Welcome, nice senior lady. You've got me beat I don't have a cell phone yet (gasp!).

We're really not a chat room, which means "real time" back and forth, but rather a forum or bulletin board where people post their messages and receive replies. it's a little different.

But for bragging rights, sure tell your friends you're in a chat room about traveling to Europe and having a ball.

no, this isn't a chat room, which tend to have unsavory reputations, so I don't think you want to tell people you are in one.

Chat rooms are when everyone is logged on simultaneously and everyone can see what everyone else is writing as they do it -- it's not left just for reading whenever you want, as message boards or forums do. So, it's more interactive. Chat rooms are usually really boring and a waste of time, actually, from the few I have ventured into many years ago when I first got onto the internet. Most adults don't have the time to all meet at some particular time on the internet to do this, so they are generally full of adolescents or people with serious fetishes.

They are really boring because a lot of the people aren't very literate or don't have anything much to say, and most folks take a long time to type, also.

Now a few folks on Fodors call these posts "emails" but they aren't.

Welcome to Fodors passportplus! :-) I heartily applaud you for keeping up on technology. My dear mother is in her mid-50s and only in the last year have we (my entire family) gotten her familiar with using computers.

welcome from another older senior, definately not a chat roiom. And I have neither cell phone, ipod, digital camera, nor a car :)

I think I'm pretty good with tech stuff, but I can not figure out how to send a text message on my cell phone. I have to send it all one word, because I can't figure out how to put spaces in. So I send my kid this kind of note: "icantpickyouuptakethebushomeok"

wliwl, you can type in spaces. The space is the second symbol (after the #) on the lower right key of my phone, and maybe all phones.

I learned this from my daughter.

The difference between chat rooms and message boards is that chat rooms are more like a telephone conversation...you both have to be there, and you talk in real time.

A message board is more like it sounds -- You leave a message here, and people can (and do) post answers on the board underneath yours.

But, if you want to tell your friends at the bridge club that you've talked online, you can say that without lying!

Another good hint is to find your name at the top of the page and click on it. It will show all the posts you've made in order of how recent they have appeared.

Enjoy! My grandma was in her 80s before she got e-mail and the internet, and she loved it!

You appear, from your comment here, to consider your mother to be a senior and she's in her mid-50's?

I beg your pardon. I'm 59 and I'm not there yet! I have no idea how "old" passportplus is, but I'm afraid that you might have made her think that she's really over the hill if you think mid-50's constitutes "seniority."

maybe you can re-read that post again.

when i read it, to me its applauding a senior who is doing something that many otehrs much younger are not (or only recently have).

Maybe you misinterpreted the use of the term "dear" to refer to being over the hill, senioor and otehrwise old. but I don;t think so. My dear wife is 18 years old. she's still dear to me.

Perhaps the early lesson here for passportplus is that it is very difficult to interpret written text the way its meant to.
