"Am I forgetting the Alps?"
-- If you're even asking the question, then the answer is Yes! See the Alps! |
I have a few more comments to add. Don't worry about exploring the village of Wengen. The village itself is not exciting; it's the walks and excursions in the area that make it so special. while it might be a good idea to get up to the Jungfrau early, I think that the Mannlichein - Kleine Scheidegg hike is better done starting from the Mannlichein gondola and walking towards kleine Scheidegg, because you have the major peaks in front of you as you walk.
I don't think you're crazy to want to also do Lucerne, since both the transportation museum and the lake ride would be wonderful for your kids. But, six days total is alot to do more than two areas in Switzerland, I think. the other thing about the weather that we found (July) was that it changes quickly. we had showers some of the days, but they passed through. The clouds did seem to roll in by the afternoon. I fall into the camp that thought the Jungfrau trip was overrated, particularly because you spend so much time on a train in the tunnel, but you don't know until you've done it. The ice palace is alot of fun. But if I had only a very limited time in the area, I would want to be sure that I had time to do a walking excursion (you don't really even have to call it hiking because many of the paths, even at the tops of the mountains, are flat.) |
Thanks for the comments skatedancer. My husband is keen on the Jungfrau trip, however I have a feeling I may be just fine if the weather is poor up top and that makes the decision for us. The hiking/walking options seem endless! You mentioned that the weather could change quickly. Do you know if the weather is typically the same on top as it would be in Wengen?

They have 'live cams' that tell you what the view looks like from up top, so you can make an informed decision before committing to buying tickets (even with Swiss Pass discount, they ain't cheap.) Check out this link: http://tinyurl.com/yu6b3h This is why staying in the area is such a good idea. If the weather clears, one grabs it - things could sock in again in a few hours. Good luck with your planning. |
