accommodation in Munich, Germany
We are looking for an apartment or bandb or hotel (can be 1 room for 4 people)in Munich for December 20-24 and 29 for under $200 a night. Any leads would be most appreciated!

I have used the Astoria in the Schwabing area for years because it is a good value with an excellent front desk staff.
Room 301 is large enough for 4 people with two supplemental beds. Whether or not the hotel will make that arrangement I do not know. You can email them and ask. The front desk staff, all 4 of them, speak good English. [email protected] Frau Hildebrandt and Frau Quade are on the front desk this week. Either one can help you. Given the weakness of the dollar, you will have trouble finding a room for 4 under $200. That is only about €145, which is not much in European cities. |
If the 4 people are two adults and two kids the Uhland might just be the perfect place. They have family rooms with bunkbeds. Shoot them an email and see if they have anything available. It is a nice place at a budget price across from the Oktober Fest grounds and about a 10 minute walk to the train station. There is also a U-Bahn station about a block away.
|
I think we will have to pay more like $250-300. Thanks.
|
The bus is also about a block away (from the Uhland). Also try the Hotel Amba (right across from the train station). I know they have triples, not sure about a quad. www.hotel-amba.de.

We stay at a small 3 star hotel in the upscale neihborhood of Lehel. Hotel Domus is discreet, well located with a nice breakfast buffet. Close to the U4/U5, Sankt Anna Kirche (concerts), local bakeries, the Englischer Garten, the fine Bavarian Museum and its smaller cousin behind it, a delightful archaeological/anthropological museum http://www.archaeologie-bayern.de/_en/index.html with its artifacts starting at 120,0000 years ago. Also walkable to many other museums such as the Deutsche Museum, Alte Pinotek and sights and easily walkable to Maxmillian Strasse.
http://www.europeby.com/hotel-domus/ Also several very good and reasonable restaurants nearby. |
We stayed at this hotel in Lehel twice. Put in your dates and check out the prices. It's a couple blocks from the underground.

We really liked the Platzl, just 1 block off the Marienplatz. Great location and good breakfasts.
|
Fletch:
Try the very comfortable three-star Kraft in midtown, just a short walk to Marienplatz, English Garten, etc. We stayed there several years ago and my granddaughter stayed there two years ago and it worked out very well.(Rates below..for December you just might get it for under $200 for 4...but it may be closed for Christmas according to their website) http://www.hotel-kraft.com/muenchen-hotel-preise.html (with a very sumptuous breakfast buffet) Stu T. |
Thank you all. Both Domas and Kraft are closed for Christmas. Uhland got some bad reviews, and I am afraid it might be cold in December. Platzl looks beautiful but may be too expensive. Waiting to hear from others. Suitehotel might be a possibility but I am unsure of location.
|
Hi 16,
>Uhland got some bad reviews, and I am afraid it might be cold in December. Where are the reviews? Did the heat go out? ((I)) |
Hi Ira. The reviews were on Trip Advisor. One said there wasn't any heat at all and another said there was only a small radiator and the room had high ceilings so it was cold. What do you think? And can you tell me if the location is good?
|
I would strongly recommend staying closer to Marienplatz in the cold winter month. We've been in Munich in the cold December month 3 times. The immediate surrounding of the hotel makes a difference. I tend to stay away from hotels (like Uhland) near in the train station or Theresienwiese area because it's not the best looking part of Munich.
Take a look at Hotel AM MARKT (around 100 euro) which has a very central location close to the Viktualienmarkt & Marienplatz. I also like the location of the pricier hotel Platzl but if you can afford Platzl, then you may consider the Maximillian Apartments & Hotel as you get a living room, kitchen etc for the same price range with equally great location. The absolute best location is between Marienplatz & Maximillianstrasse. The best way to select your hotel is to use the www.hrs.com and sort the hotels by distance from Munich Rathaus(Marienplatz)on the top toolbar. It gives you pictures, numeric rating and map location. No commission charge and cancellable. |
I just read your posts that you use tripadvisor to evaluate hotels. Am Markt has bad tripadvisor reviews as they room quality is varied but it is a basic hotel with a very central location. The room they showed me was clean & renovated but I didn't stay there.
Perhaps you should consider Maximillian Apartments (see picture in hrs.com) or Hotel Platzl as has been recommended. |
Hi 16,
I haven't been to the Uhland in Dec, so I can't comment on the heat. I did look at the Tripadvisor reviews. It's no. 5 of 349 hotels. It has a rating of 4.5 based on 110 posts. There are very few poor ratings. You can walk to the central train station in under 15 min, and to the Marienplatz and the Viktualienmarkt in about 20. If you prefer buses and the Ubahn, see http://tinyurl.com/aseb5 We enjoyed our stay there and didn't find it too out of the way. You might also want to look up the Uhland in the "search this forum" box. Enjoy your visit. ((I)) |
DAX and Ira-This is fantastic information. I will definitely check out your rec. In terms of location, my daughter will probably be living in student housing in Olympic village so it would great if it weren't too far from there, either. When I decide on something, I will post it. So far, nothing definite. Thanks again.

Here's a second vote for the Apartment Hotel Maximilian. We stayed in a one bedroom apartment which had tons of room for three of us. They also have 2 bedroom ones. It is a five minute walk from Marienplatz (bliss at Christmas) and is near the Isator train station, which connects directly to the airport. Also very close to grocery stores. We were there for Christmas last year, and it really can't be beat.

The Olympic village is for to the north away from oldtown. Use hrs.com to sort the hotels by distance from the olympic stadium. I personally would recommend staying in Schwabing which is a student area so that there's more of community crossroads/life as it is probably not as fun to stay in non descript residential area. The Renaissance is a bargain as they often offer a humongous executive suite (apartment size) for around 100 euro including buffet breakfast. There is an airport bus stop just across the street from the Renaissance (25 minute ride to the airport) makes it practical, but I don't know how to get to the Olympic village from the hotel except by taxi. A block away is the Marriott. Holiday Inn has a much better location being in the main boulevard in Schwabing so you have direct acces to the commerce in Schwabing. Lots of less expensive cafes, restaurants in the more bohemian Schwabing.
That said I would still check Maximilian apts if you want to maximize the enjoyment of your stay in Munich. You can use the U bahn under the Marienplatz to commute to the Olympic village. I can recommend several good places to eat inside Munich oldtown if you need it. |
You might want to check out Hotel Schlicker, very near Viktualienmarkt and the Rathaus.

Regarding the suggestion for Hotel Am Markt, yes it is in a great location, but I stayed there last September and would never go back there. We were looking for a room for our last night in Munich as our other hotel was sold out for that night. I booked the Am Markt based on their location and price, but the experience was not good.
To start, the man at the front desk was not friendly at all; a complete opposite of the hosts of the Laimer Hof where we had just been. The room was very small, and the bathroom was the smallest we encountered on our trip. I felt like I was stepping up into a porta-potty with a shower stall in it. I wasn't looking for luxury, but I expected something basic and comfortable. The room just had a creepy, somewhat dirty vibe to it. We had paid a few euro extra to have breakfast included, but when we saw the selection of a couple hard rolls, a big bowl of yogurt and some cereal we decided to go elsewhere. I asked the desk clerk if he would just take the breakfast charge off the room bill and, even though I had a written confirmation from them with both price options, he wouldn't adjust the price. We didn't argue the issue because we just wanted to get out of there. Maybe we just had a bad experience at an otherwise not so bad place, but from what I observed, there was nothing to ever make me go back. Not even if it was free. |
Well, after going on the hrs website, i lost all my e-mails!Just getting things back after many, many hours!
I'm seriously considering the Advokat Hotel since the apt. is 220-180 .Love to hear what anyone thinks, Thanks!Laimerhof and Alfa are other possibilities. Max apt. rents by the month . Thanks so much, |
We stayed at the Uhland at Christmas a couple of years ago and one cold afternoon we were freezing in out room. I called the front desk and they told me to look behind the curtains to turn on the radiator. It warmed right up and I felt like an idiot.
|
Still deciding. Final ones- Royal, Uhland, Monaco, Condor, Laimerhof(too far away?) Concerned about location, cancellation policy, size of rooms.looking at 2 rooms, not 1.
|
We liked the Hotel Bauer Bock near Viktualienmarkt. Good Breakfast, nice folks, very good location:
http://www.hotelblauerbock.de/preise.htm Regards, Gary |
Gary-
Pretty sure I checked that one and it was closed during Christmas. Thanks |
Unfortunately I've never stayed in the hotel range you've chosen, but I've been to some of them without staying there as I was checking out some hotels for some friends.
Your final choices (Monaco,Royal,Condor)seem to clump around the train station which is not the nice part of Munich. Of the three I would choose CONDOR based on location as you'll be closer to Karlsplatz and that street is just a bit better than the other two which has more strip joints in the area. Uhland is too far from the oldtown, it's practically just south of the train station area. I think going north is better than south of the station. I believe some Fodorites like Kings hotel & Kings First Class in the north of the station. Blauer Bock is interesting because it has a nicer interior than its shabby exterior which is the opposite of Uhland's situation which has a charming exterior. If location is most important then Blauer Bock has the best location being close to the Viktualienmarkt at the heart of oldtown, you'll be very close to the Marienplatz/city hall and Maximillianstr area. In the same hotel building, there is a very nice independent restaurant called Blauer Bock unrelated to the hotel.www.restaurant-blauerbock.de/ We enjoyed eating at that restaurant and by accident entered the hotel lobby. I remember that it looked darker than the hotel internet pictures. Laimerhof is close to the Olympic stadium but far from the nice old town. |
Thank you so much. Bauaer Block is too expensive for us, I am afraid, but I will write to them anyway. Have you checked about how big the rooms are at any of these? Looks like Condor's are really small, as is the breakfast room. I'm most probably going with Royal which is non-smoking!
|
I've increased the price I can pay! So now I am looking at Novotel Munich City, Platzl, Mirabell, and Flemming--others?
|
Can you tell us what your budget is now? It seems confusing because Platzl is charging 277 eur per room per night. Then you should be able to book Maximilian apartment & hotel for a lot less, and you'll save money if you get the 2 bedroom unit. I think it's the most decent place for a family of 4 where you can be together but have plenty of space to be comfortable. http://www.maximilian-munich.com/
If I were to stay in the train station area then I would pick Le Meridien or Sofitel. In my mind, the smaller hotels are just not worth the poor location no matter how big the rooms are. |
Hotel an der Oper was very nice in a great location. Would stay again.
|
it's closed during the time we want to go!
|
Maximilian is closed also
|
actually, Platzl is out of my price range. Maximilian only had rooms for 165E each left--others were already booked. I'm hoping for under 140E each room.

One hotel I can suggest for your last night in Munich on the 29th is the Renaissance in Schwabing. The hotel chain website still has a 640 sq-ft executive suite for 99 euro including buffet breakfast. There is a Lufthansa bus stop across the street from the hotel that will take you to the airport in 25 minutes. You can get a glimpse of the more bohemian student district Schwabing & Englischer Garten (if not too freezing) and hopefully some access to the Olympic village (I don't know how from Schwabing, perhaps email the Renaissance). Though it's very american, you may appreciate having the large suites to spread out and pack your suitcases. Funky bathroom but good size living room with a kitchen, nook, & balconies with no view. I wouldn't recommend it for your initial 4 night stay unless you don't mind taking 10 euro taxi rides to oldtown which is reasonable enough for 4 people. I'm sure S/U bahn costs at least 2 euro something per ride.
|
sounds interesting. We really have to stay in the same place for the trip so we can leave our luggage. (We're going to Istanbul from 24-29)Are there restaurants close to it?It's two rooms? Can anyone take the Lufthansea bus to the airport?
Do you know anything about the Novotel Munchen City? |
Anyone been to Hotel Bristol? Location is near Sendlinger...
|
I was at the Bristol 3 years ago.
While the general location is good (very close to subways, city center / old town), I found the rooms small and not in a very good nor modern shape. I would not pay more than € 80-90 for a dbl room, unless they did some renovation since I was there. |
it was 99E through HRS web. Did you happen to go in Dec.? COncerned about heat. Also, can't get on the Hotel's website or e-mail them directly-what's up with that??
I think it might have been renovated in 2006.Any other suggestions in that vicinity? |

I had a smimilar request for a room for 4 that is reasonably priced in Munich! We are going in June so a/c was a concern. I booked the marriott for about 150american per night including breakfast. It was cheaper without breakfast. You may want to check prices for the dec. dates. Good luck! |
