Access to Fodors Blocked at work!!!

The company I work for has blocked certain websites. Apparently Fodors forum is considered a chat room so I don't have access to it at work. Sure makes for a long day at the office!

AP6380 Nov 7th, 2003 02:54 PM

I had a problem today too- I could view the website but I couldn't log in! I guess my co. could have implemented a block of some sort?

cmt Nov 7th, 2003 02:59 PM

That happened to me a few days ago. I changed my password, then changed it back to my old pazssword when I got home, and the next day I could post at work as usual. I don't spend TOO much time on Foodors at work, because internet use is monitored, but I don't think access to any particular forum is blocked.

Patrick Nov 7th, 2003 06:19 PM

OK, I'll bite. What kind of jobs do you people have that you're on Fodors at work? Are you paid for that time? Are they hiring?

Mary_Fran Nov 7th, 2003 06:33 PM

Maybe the cookie handling set up on your computer at work is what is causing you trouble. I hate the idea of cookies and installed some cookie blocking software on my computer. However, to use the Fodors site, I have to go into Tools, Privacy, and change options to allow all cookies.

PalenqueBob Nov 7th, 2003 06:35 PM

Yeh what kind of jobs you'all have to complain about being blocked to Fodors at work! You've just incrimanated yourselves. Would be it that most workers would have such a pedestrian complaint! You think the Boss pays you to play?

Scarlett Nov 7th, 2003 06:42 PM

Gee, if no one posted while they were at work, these forums would be all retired people or housewives and only be busy after work hours!
Good thing some of you are rebels !!

Anonymous Nov 7th, 2003 07:03 PM

Hey, us retired housewives resemble that remark!

KS452 Nov 7th, 2003 07:07 PM

To me, the fact that you used three exclamation points in the header of your post says you are trying convey the sense of either dismay or anger. What is it that shocks you or makes you mad about the person paying your wages expecting you not to goof off while on the clock? Methinks you and your ilk had better watch yourselves during this era of scarce jobs and maximized productivity.

cigalechanta Nov 7th, 2003 07:09 PM

jeez, anon, all this time I thought you were a guy!!

Scarlett Nov 7th, 2003 07:15 PM

anon, LOL

ks425312223 ,, "ilk" LOL

There have been threads like this in the past, all of a sudden, a lot of people are very concerned about what everyone else should be doing and worried about someone getting paid for not working..reminds me of the small town I used to live in as a child in the South..so many busybodies~

PalenqueBob Nov 7th, 2003 07:21 PM

I could care less about what people are doing at work. But to bellyache about being blocked access to Fodors seems so self serving. I don't know but if you're at work it is unreasonable to expect you to be working?

orangetravelcat Nov 7th, 2003 07:21 PM

I don't post on Fodors from work; but do I read posts. I work in a call center; and read posts inbetween calls.

Mischka Nov 7th, 2003 07:33 PM

Just wondering, are the travel information needs or opinions of housewives and retired people of less value than working folk?

Scarlett Nov 7th, 2003 07:43 PM

I am sorry that my remark about the only people being on Fodors during a working day would be retired people or housewives is being read the wrong way. I would never mean that, considering most days I am a housewife.
What I meant was that not EVERYONE would be posting, just those not working, like retired people and housewives (although I know few housewives who don't work very hard)..
So please don't take offense~

Mischka Nov 7th, 2003 08:10 PM

Glad to to hear that Scarlett, no offense taken :-)

John Nov 7th, 2003 08:51 PM

All you people PLEASE keep on working and working hard so that I may continue to collect (and you pay) social security. Hey, I put my time in.
Thank you very much.

Nutella Nov 8th, 2003 03:29 AM

Come on folks. Many of us work really hard and put in a full day at the office, staying late when needed, but a little downtime never hurt the national GNP. Some people take smoking breaks, some chat on the phone with their kids throughout the day, some stand around the water cooler, and some of us check in on our favorite websites. If anyone here said to a customer "Sorry, I can't help you now, I'm on Fodors" that would be a different story, but in 99% of the time it's not the case.
p.s. Plus it's a well known fact that my own boss is addicted to Fantasy Football : )

Maira Nov 8th, 2003 03:41 AM

I used to work at a company that monitored the use of Internet for improper use, which meant no visits to porn sites, spending time at work unrelated chat rooms, etc... I used to go to Fodor's during lunchtime and this was allowed. I guess it goes back to work ethics. It often was the case that the people that complained the most about not getting promoted or not getting the good projects were the ones that spend a good chunk of their time surfing the net at work.

wesley Nov 8th, 2003 04:39 AM

I'm sorry to hear all you people are still working. I hope all of you enjoy what you do. Life is TOO SHORT to surrender your enjoyment to some "boss" and his corporation. I'd tolerate a "Fodors break" from an employee any time to a cigarette break. Travel knowledge is education. Any employee of mine who can help plan my trips abroad gets a raise. KEEP ON READING AT WORK, FOLKS!

wondering Nov 8th, 2003 12:33 PM

my guess is that those of us who access at work do it at lunch, on a well-deserved break, and that we work plenty ( hours-in-service wise)---a visit to a travel website once a day sure makes the work day brighter!!!!!i love taking trips vicariously and once in awhile helping someone out with a suggestion. if they ever block me i will be plenty upset!!

ThinGorjus Nov 8th, 2003 01:40 PM

I always post on Fodors whilst I am at work. My employer would never dream of blocking access to this site. That would be a very un-gentlemanly thing to do. They don't even care if I take a three-hour lunch to go pick up my dry cleaning. My secretary visits the QVC website whilst she is working and orders clothing from JCrew.com and I couldn't care less. Some of you need a valium with a gin chaser. Blimey.

Natalia Nov 8th, 2003 01:58 PM

How odd that so many of you complain about how others spend their time while making a living. How pedestrian, how do
you qualify to judge how someone utilizes their time?
In my office we have down time between projects so we do what we want
with the time, then when it is time to work we do so and do it well. Why would a career take all of your mind all of the time.
Other times, I click on Fodors when I am holding on the phone or waiting for my computer to print what I have just spent hours creating.
It is a shame some of you have such small minds and on a travel site at that!

Patrick Nov 8th, 2003 02:16 PM

Natalia and others: I think you're missing the basic point here. It doesn't make ANY difference what the rest of us think about how some people spend their time at work. But since the powers that be have cut access to certain sites, it seems pretty clear to me that THEY are not happy about how time is being spent in that particular workplace or they wouldn't have gone to the trouble to take action. And as the BOSSES, they certainly have every reason to block access if they feel it is interferring with work somehow. Apparently THEY do.

What prompted this thread was not simply asking or telling what other people think about how time is spent in a workplace. It was a post complaining because a business saw fit to cut access due to what was apparently perceived as a problem. I think the general reactions have been just what would be expected. No, no one has said, "That's outrageous. You should be allowed to do whatever you want at work and the firm shouldn't be allowed to try to control productivity." Is that what you would have expected?

cigalechanta Nov 8th, 2003 02:26 PM

I suspect that those who are at work, read the rest of us here, have a good laugh and add to our enjoyment and then...back to their work with a more relaxed attitude,.... not bad, I'd say.

Statia Nov 8th, 2003 03:15 PM

I post from work, as well. However, I'm able to multi-task, and therefore fullfill my job responsibilities, as well as post on Fodors.

I do try to be discreet about it, though.

Natalia Nov 8th, 2003 03:27 PM

Points taken, Patrick, let's hug and make up.

Now I have to go enjoy my day off....

Patrick Nov 8th, 2003 03:31 PM

I take hugs any time, Natalia. No offense was taken and I hope none given.

orangetravelcat Nov 8th, 2003 04:11 PM

Guess I opened a can of worms. I was merely stating a fact -- that I can't open Fodors at work anymore. The company was blocking porn sites and chat rooms -- company does not care if you go to sites that are inoffensive to others. I find it odd that Fodors would be considered in the same league as a porn site as far as access. The company does not care at all if we use the internet on our down time, on lunch or breaks - they just don't want "inappropriate" sites visited. Chill out, folks.

Scarlett Nov 8th, 2003 04:18 PM

LOL, orangetravelcat, there have been times that some of these trip reports could put Fodors close to a porn site :)

Budman Nov 8th, 2003 04:24 PM

Oh, you must be talking about someone's Amsterdam trip report. O-) ((b))

So many internet sites to block, and your company chose to block Fodors?? Maybe because Fodors begins with an "F"?? ((b))

crazymina Nov 8th, 2003 07:52 PM

Well, on this topic, some might be interested in this recent CNN story...

Calamari Nov 12th, 2003 09:21 PM

orangetravelcat. - Love that name BTW. -are you very attached to your job? If I had discoverd this site prior to owning my own business, I surely would have gotten into big, BIG trouble. Didn't you read the addiction disclaimer? Perhaps your employer can pay for a Foder Rehab. I was wondering why it is so slow on this board during the day.

JonJon Nov 13th, 2003 02:35 AM

Does anyone here really believe that none of these posts are done at the workplace? If so, then there's this bridge in Brooklyn that's for sale....

NYCFoodSnob Nov 13th, 2003 03:02 AM

Boy, do I remember my life in corporate. I refer to that period as "the slave days." Even though I loved every job I've had through the years, the corporate one gave me an ulcer. I learned the hard way that no boss or company is worth too much sacrifice. I think wesley said it best, life is too short.

irishdame Nov 13th, 2003 11:04 AM

I HAVE to use Fodors for my job! I work in a travel related field and use Fodors on an almost daily basis to answer questions for my clients so no chance they'd block me here!
Plus, I have a very, very cool boss who dosen't care what I do as long as my work is done and I'm booking vacations!!

AP6380 Nov 13th, 2003 11:20 AM

Mary Fran was absolutely right, I just changed my settings to "allow all cookies" and I was able to sign in for the 1st time in weeks!!!

Jayne11159 Nov 13th, 2003 11:30 AM

Hey--I like to post first thing in the morning because so many seasoned travelers here look us up at work. If my post disappears overnight, I bring it back up for the day crowd. It stands to reason that you must be doing your job well or how else could you afford to travel?!

SeaUrchin Nov 13th, 2003 11:43 AM

I read Fodors and post at work, but it is not like I am on an assembly line where I can't stop for a minute (I picture the conveyor belt with chocolates that Lucy and Ethel have to box).

I think we are all reasonable enough to know when to do our work and when we can look at Fodors on the job.

missypie Nov 13th, 2003 12:04 PM

My employer should block MY access...I'm addicted to these travel boards.
