Wonderful report, MinnBeef, and gorgeous photos. They brought back so many memories! Sicily is my favorite place in the world and it looks like you saw many of the highlights. I have been there 5 times so far and have never seen Etna in action! It has always been asleep during my visits so you were very fortunate to see some activity. I know it has been very busy in the past two years - just when I was unable to travel due to Covid!! BTW, you are the only other person I know - besides me - who was underwhelmed by the mosaics at Piazza Armerina. I even went back a second time, several years after my first visit, to see if I felt differently from a more "adult" perspective, but no. :( Anyway, if you go back to Sicily be sure to see the temples - not just at Agrigento but at Segesta and Selinunte as well. The Greek ruins in Sicily are more impressive than those in Greece!

Thank you for your kind comments. Yes, perhaps I expected too much or something else with Villa Roman del Casale. They were certainly very interesting and some more so than others. Perhaps I just found them somewhat repetitive after a while as they were all pretty much the same, somewhat monotone colors. I do wish I could have made it to Agrigento. It was in my itinerary for months and months and I didn’t drop it until the day before I was supposed to go. Fortunately I did get to the 3 Greek temples in Paestum 2 years ago and enjoyed those very much.

What a wonderful report to read as I finalize my itinerary for Sicily this September/October. Thank you! and ... do you recall the name of the restaurant in Siracusa where you had the mini ravioli with shrimp and crab in pumpkin sauce? The vacuum-packed sun-dried tomatoes look like an excellent gift to bring home to my foodie friends. Your photos also help narrow down which cathedrals are on the not-to-be-missed list.

Hello. I’m afraid I never knew the name of the restaurant to begin with. I remember that it was in Ortigia. My advice when it comes to wandering for restaurants is the bigger the crowd of locals, the more likely the restaurant is to be good. The sun dried tomatoes are from the Ballaro market in Palermo. Definitely a place you should visit but be sure to use a money belt or hide your money in a safe place. (Just a fact in most of Italy).

I’m glad you found my TR helpful. Enjoy Sicily!
