A specific Paris Metro Question
Next week, I plan to take the RER from CDG to the Saint Michel/Notre Dame stop and transfer there to the metro and get off at Saint Germain des Pres. I will have one piece of luggage with wheels. How far apart are the RER/metro platforms? Are they within the same station and can it be managed with a suitcase? Thank you.
Yes, these are within the same station. Just follow the signs. You will be carrying that suitcase on some steps and the metro portion of the ride is going to be very short.
Thanks, flyboy. A lot of steps?
There's some walking involved, but I would defer to someone who has more recent, specific experience with what you are doing. With one manageable suitcase, I would certainly consider your plan practical and I wouldn't hesitate to do it myself.
Okay, this is just what I find on my map. I cannot say how accurate this is...
The RER B runs about a block to the east of the Metro 4 at the St-Michel. At least on the map, it looks like the transfer will be closer at Chatelet or even back at Gare du Nord. Maybe others can comment on this... |
you will have no trouble with one piece of luggage. there are escalators for most of the big platform height differences. i was with my brother and sister in-law and they had no trouble and they are not in the best of shape.
Just be forewarned: Steps and metro stations are synonymous!
If I remember correctly, Chatelet may look closer on a map but is a MAJOR correspondance and has lots of stairs and walking to many of the connecting trains. I would avoid using that one myself.
A reminder, your RER ticket will work at the Metro turnstiles for this transfer.

Go to
http://www.ratp.fr/index_eng.htm and plug in your start and finish and see which stops they recommend. My wife and I managed easily with a shoulder bag and a wheeled bag, each, even when some escalaters were not operating. |
I find stairs less stressful than escalators when I am carrying luggage.
Thank you all. I am certain of my route. Just wasn't sure about the specifics of the transfer, until now! Leaving Monday for 10 days. A bientot!
