When my Dad escaped he did not see his parents again for 25 years.
They had already been refugees as children during the war, fleeing their little village in Silesia (his mother with 2 little children, she’d barely been out of her village before, husband was conscripted so she was on her own) then finding refuge in what was to become East Germany and living under that regime.

Maybe you already have, but if you could record him talking about his experiences it would be quite the legacy for your family in years to come. I imagine it could take a number of sessions... an ongoing project but would be worth it.

We did exactly that.... my son had a free choice school project and interviewed several other migrants/ refugees as well, some incredible life stories collected.
I regret not doing the same with my grandparents.

So do I, Adelaidean. My gran was born and brought up in India in the last days of the Raj and didn't see Britain until she was 36. i can remember a few of the stories she told but not many. Now I should like to go to India to follow her life there [she was born in Madras and then moved to Bombay, as she called them] but I have few if any details.

Swandav, .....you are in Switzerland, lucky you, weather looks divine...

Enjoy :)

swandav2000 Oct 6th, 2018 02:07 AM

No not yet! I leave on Monday 15 Oct. I'm still at home, and yes the weather is divine here!

So think about this for your next trip here...

Wow, looks fabulous.

Guess that would be quite a hike, enough calories burned to earn a kaiserschmarrn?

swandav2000 Oct 6th, 2018 03:29 AM

 My friends drove me. Not sure how to access, as, yes, a bit of a hike from the Wank cable car station in Partenkirchen (bus stop there).

That view is what keeps me returning to GaP.

Swandav mentioned earlier in the thread all the tourist shops that have taken over there but it was not always so. I found some great Bally loafers there once upon a time (still have them) and they had other lovely shops. There was a better mix of nice things plus fewer hats/beer steins/leder hosen key fob places.

Adelaidean Oct 6th, 2018 03:08 PM

I agree, Trophywife, I am not usually a shopper, but I really enjoyed the stores in GaPa (and Hall) - I very nearly bought a leather bag, very unlike me. Had to deliberately avoid the shoe stores as well. There were really nice looking stores with quality items.

So... do tell... do you regret leaving the leather bag there? Sometime those things haunt (taunt) you... "If only I'd just gone ahead and gotten the darned thing!"

Adelaidean Oct 6th, 2018 05:37 PM

Yes!!
I even considered returning from Hall the long way round just to stop in GaPa for that bag!
But, the Oktoberfest crowds put me off, and I took a much easier trip back avoiding the main train station in Munich and therefore GaPa.
So, no bag .... sadly.

Lesson learned!

Adelaidean, a fabulous report: the family history and reconnections, the scenery captured with your wonderful photos, your writing style. All is great and greatly appreciated!

Excellent report. Being from the western half of Texas, I can empathize with you a bit on going someplace different from where you live (though it's not quite as stark here as in the Outback). Loved the photographs. Not sure when I'm going to make it to that part of Germany, but I will eventually. A lot of good ideas in here.

Also interested to see that you're going to Swtizerland in June. We did a June Switzerland trip in 2016. I think you can find my report if you click my name.

Adelaidean Nov 2nd, 2018 06:16 PM

Thanks tom, where did you go this year?

twk, I did read your report before our Switzerland trip last year, next trip will be a mix of re visits and new bases. We only had 18 days last time, have 30 next year :)

Melnq8 Nov 5th, 2018 02:39 PM

Adelaidean - we're off to Switzerland, Austria and Germany in a few weeks!

Adelaidean Nov 6th, 2018 11:03 PM

Hi Mel, wishing you another wonderful trip.

I have been poring over your TR's and have so many great plans for the Scuol region next year, it's going to be great- you have given me loads of ideas. Thank you...

Vttraveler Nov 7th, 2018 05:59 AM

I have really enjoyed reading this TR.

My husband and I lived in northern Bavaria (Eichstätt, near Ingolstadt) in the 1980's. It was great to see your wonderful pictures and get some updated ideas of restaurants to visit. We are hoping to get to Germany next year to visit a friend living in Nürnberg and spend some time in Berlin.

How wonderful that you were able to take your father on this trip while he and his sister were still able to enjoy their special chance to see each other.

Adelaidean thank you so much for taking the time to write this trip report. Love all the personal tidbits about your family. So much history that we hope people never forget. Love your writing style and you have given me so many tips as I am thinking of planning a trip to that area.

I wish I could write as well as you (which I can't) but maybe you have inspired me to write some trip reports. I could at least put in some beautiful pictures!

Thanks again!
