24 hours in Munich - highlights?
 

Hoping my fellow Fodorites can help with this dilemma. Arriving Munich from London next April for one day so are trying to make the most with a short amount of time. If you only had 24 hours, what would your fave pics be for things to see/do? We love walking,biking, museums, architecture and beer! Any suggestions? Thanks for the input.

The glockenspiel at the Marienplatz; the Residenze Museum (be sure to visit the Treasury to see the over the top carved carriage collection. You could also substitute the Nymphenburg Palace or you could take the S-Bahn out to Dachau.

Alte Pinakothek if you'd like to see a major art museum. Deutsches Museum for a sprawling technical museum.

You may want to considere Mikes Bike Tour(www.mikesbiketours.com). We went on the 4 hour tour several years ago and loved it. You'll get a good overview of the city and it makes a stop at a beer garden! Have a great time in Munich.

The Residenz is convenient to Marienplatz, but when I was there, the endless progression of rococo rooms became tedious. I think I would prefer Schloss Nymphenburg. It's a smaller palace, so the number of rococo rooms is under control, and, if the weather is good, walking around the grounds is pleasant. You can get to Nymphenburg by taking the #17 tram from the north side of the Hauptbahnhof.

I have alway wanted to see the Deutsches Museum, but I understand that one day is total inadequate for all that is there.

A place that I have been to twice and always enjoyed is the Munich city museum, a few blocks south of Marienplatz. Both times they had exhibits (different) showing some historical information (maps, drawings, models) about Munich in earlier times. The descriptions are only in German, but dates can easily be read.

Unless you plan to go out to Dachau, you can get an innerzone (Innenraum) Partner day ticket (Tageskarte) for €8,50, which is good for unlimited travel for up to five people on all of the conveyances (S/U-Bahn, trams, and buses) in the innerzone. The zone boundaries are found on the standard "Urban Rail" map found in the stations or at http://www.mvv-muenchen.de/web4archi...nnetz_2007.pdf. Virtually everything to see in Munich except for Dachau is in the innerzone. The trams never go out of the zone, and only about 2 U-Bahn stops are outside of the inner zone. However, the S-Bahns go way outside of the inner zone, so be careful if riding them.

Stop in for lunch at the Victualienmarkt, just southeast of the Marienplatz. Sit under the trees with your wurst and beer. Aaah.

I see you are arriving from London so you are probably arriving at the airport. In that case, buy an all zones partner day ticket for €17. The cost is about the same as two S-Bahn tickets into town. That ticket give you unlimited travel anywhere in the MVV area.

Don't miss the Hofbrauhaus--nothing like it! (Remember when you order your beer that it will come in a liter mug unless you specify otherwise -- cheers!)

I second the recommendation for the Mike's Bikes tour. We went and had a blast - saw quite a bit of the central part of the city, had a terrific guide who told us all sorts of great stories, and as mentioned - it included a stop in a beer garden. Definitely worth it.

If you decide to head out to Schloss Nymphenberg, which is also terrific, there is a really great beer garden near there called the Hirschgarten. It is really big and since it is off the beaten path, it has a real local feel to it.

we were in Munchen during Easter weekend, so our choices were somewhat limited, but if weather forces you indoors you can't beat the Deutches Museum. We also enjoyed the Augustiner, Lowenbrau (!), and Hofbrauhaus breweries... Thirsy work, tourism!

One regret was not getting to wander & snack at Alois Dallmayr due to the Easter Sunday/Rose Monday closures. Somebody HAS to eat some of those cakes & tell me how incredible they are/were. ;-)

Pardon me (entschuldigen Sie mich) Logos, but my Langenscheidt says "Museum" is a "das" word. Shouldn't that be Deutsche(s) Museum? (Or is that dativ? LOL)?

Anyway, despite your negativity, we stumbled on Hofbräuhaus around lunch time and had a thoroughly delightful lunch. The food was good, reasonably priced, and the atmosphere, although corney, was fun (OK, I used to belong to a Trachten Erhaltungs Verein here in the U.S., and it reminded be of home. Hey, we do the bird dance. Do you have a problem with that?)

Augustiner Keller on Arnulfstrasse 52, near the main train station, is one of my favorite places/beers. I remember someone recommended another Augustiner place that was more of a "locals" place, nearby. Was that you, logos999? ((b))

that's "Trachtenerhaltungsverein", and the bird dance died with "Klaus und Klaus" ;-). That' even worse than "Du die Wanne is voll". I do hate John Travolta, btw.

"National Lampoons Vacation" is just beeing shown on Austrian TV channel one. Almost as good as "The sound of music" :D Chevy Chase is one of the best actors around!
