24 hours in Munich - highlights?

Hoping my fellow Fodorites can help with this dilemma. Arriving Munich from London next April for one day so are trying to make the most with a short amount of time. If you only had 24 hours, what would your fave pics be for things to see/do? We love walking, biking, museums, architecture and beer! Any suggestions? Thanks for the input.

The glockenspiel at the Marienplatz; the Residenze Museum (be sure to visit the Treasury to see the over the top carved carriage collection. You could also substitute the Nymphenburg Palace or you could take the S-Bahn out to Dachau.

DAX Nov 13th, 2006 01:17 PM

Alte Pinakothek if you'd like to see a major art museum. Deutsches Museum for a sprawling technical museum.

You may want to considere Mikes Bike Tour(www.mikesbiketours.com). We went on the 4 hour tour several years ago and loved it. You'll get a good overview of the city and it makes a stop at a beer garden! Have a great time in Munich.

The Residenz is convenient to Marienplatz, but when I was there, the endless progression of rococo rooms became tedious. I think I would prefer Schloss Nymphenburg. It's a smaller palace, so the number of rococo rooms is under control, and, if the weather is good, walking around the grounds is pleasant. You can get to Nymphenburg by taking the #17 tram from the north side of the Hauptbahnhof.

I have alway wanted to see the Deutsches Museum, but I understand that one day is total inadequate for all that is there.

A place that I have been to twice and always enjoyed is the Munich city museum, a few blocks south of Marienplatz. Both times they had exhibits (different) showing some historical information (maps, drawings, models) about Munich in earlier times. The descriptions are only in German, but dates can easily be read.

Unless you plan to go out to Dachau, you can get an innerzone (Innenraum) Partner day ticket (Tageskarte) for €8,50, which is good for unlimited travel for up to five people on all of the conveyances (S/U-Bahn, trams, and buses) in the innerzone. The zone boundaries are found on the standard "Urban Rail" map found in the stations or at http://www.mvv-muenchen.de/web4archi...nnetz_2007.pdf. Virtually everything to see in Munich except for Dachau is in the innerzone. The trams never go out of the zone, and only about 2 U-Bahn stops are outside of the inner zone. However, the S-Bahns go way outside of the inner zone, so be careful if riding them.

Stop in for lunch at the Victualienmarkt, just southeast of the Marienplatz. Sit under the trees with your wurst and beer. Aaah.

Larryincolorado Nov 14th, 2006 09:51 AM

Ops!

I see you are arriving from London so you are probably arriving at the airport. In that case, buy an all zones partner day ticket for €17. The cost is about the same as two S-Bahn tickets into town. That ticket give you unlimited travel anywhere in the MVV area.

Don't miss the Hofbrauhaus--nothing like it! (Remember when you order your beer that it will come in a liter mug unless you specify otherwise -- cheers!)

J_Correa Nov 14th, 2006 10:50 AM

I second the recommendation for the Mike's Bikes tour. We went and had a blast - saw quite a bit of the central part of the city, had a terrific guide who told us all sorts of great stories, and as mentioned - it included a stop in a beer garden. Definitely worth it.

If you decide to head out to Schloss Nymphenberg, which is also terrific, there is a really great beer garden near there called the Hirschgarten. It is really big and since it is off the beaten path, it has a real local feel to it.

starfish1 Nov 14th, 2006 12:13 PM

Wow, we apparently could spend a week no problem. Will narrow things down - love the bike tour idea also. Thanks so much everyone for all your responses. As always, appreciate the help!

ronin Nov 14th, 2006 12:24 PM

we were in Munchen during Easter weekend, so our choices were somewhat limited, but if weather forces you indoors you can't beat the Deutches Museum. We also enjoyed the Augustiner, Lowenbrau (!), and Hofbrauhaus breweries... Thirsy work, tourism!

One regret was not getting to wander & snack at Alois Dallmayr due to the Easter Sunday/Rose Monday closures. Somebody HAS to eat some of those cakes & tell me how incredible they are/were. ;-)

logos999 Nov 14th, 2006 12:31 PM

>Deutches Museum
The Deutsche Museum has been fascinting me since I was a small kid. All those toys and machines to play with.
>Lowenbraeu
Rather low quality beer
>Hofbrauhaus
The Hofbraeuhaus is a nightmare! Waste of time.
>Alois Dallmayr
Not worth going there!
>Schloss Nymphenburg, Hirschgarten
Nice, but don't eat there.

logos999 Nov 14th, 2006 12:35 PM

>Lowenbraeu
Loewenbraeu

Larryincolorado Nov 14th, 2006 02:18 PM

Pardon me (entschuldigen Sie mich) Logos, but my Langenscheidt says "Museum" is a "das" word. Shouldn't that be Deutsche(s) Museum? (Or is that dativ? LOL)?

Anyway, despite your negativity, we stumbled on Hofbräuhaus around lunch time and had a thoroughly delightful lunch. The food was good, reasonably priced, and the atmosphere, although corney, was fun (OK, I used to belong to a Trachten Erhaltungs Verein here in the U.S., and it reminded be of home. Hey, we do the bird dance. Do you have a problem with that?)

Budman Nov 14th, 2006 02:23 PM

Augustiner Keller on Arnulfstrasse 52, near the main train station, is one of my favorite places/beers. I remember someone recommended another Augustiner place that was more of a "locals" place, nearby. Was that you, logos999? ((b))

logos999 Nov 14th, 2006 02:32 PM

>entschuldigen Sie mich
No "mich" needed ;-)
>"das" word. Shouldn't that be Deutsche(s) Museum?
Das Deutsche Museum is correct :-)
>Was that you, logos999?
Try the Augustiner "across the street" at Landsberger Straße.

logos999 Nov 14th, 2006 02:36 PM

by the way: "Sie" is not used when posting, it's always "Du". We're a big family on the internet ;-)

logos999 Nov 14th, 2006 02:39 PM

>Trachten Erhaltungs Verein
that's "Trachtenerhaltungsverein", and the bird dance died with "Klaus und Klaus" ;-). That' even worse than "Du die Wanne is voll". I do hate John Travolta, btw.

logos999 Nov 14th, 2006 02:48 PM

>ist voll...
Lyrics:
I speak English, I can tanzen
And I look unheimlich gut
I have always gute Chancen
What say you denn da dazu, hä?
I stimm you zu, you are echt nicht schlecht
Ach ja ?
And your Stimme ist ein Hit
Ja echt ja

I want to be Deine Partnerin
Da lässt sich drüber speaken
I sing vor und you sing mit
Okay, but einer after dem anderen

logos999 Nov 14th, 2006 03:28 PM

"National Lampoons Vacation" is just beeing shown on Austrian TV channel one. Almost as good as "The sound of music" :D Chevy Chase is one of the best actors around!

phieaglefan Nov 14th, 2006 04:01 PM

logos - you're cracking me up. I've been wanting to take some rust off my German, you gave me the incentive since I had to look up a few words!

Leaving on our beer safari to Bamberg and Munich in a mere 48 hours...enjoying the suggestions. :)

logos999 Nov 14th, 2006 04:21 PM

Try this:
AUGUSTINER BRÄUSTUBEN
Landsberger Straße 19

starfish1 Nov 14th, 2006 04:51 PM

Oh my - I see I have ALOT to learn on this forum. Thanks for many thoughtful and amusing suggestions - especially on the beer front! ;)

beanweb24 Nov 14th, 2006 05:25 PM

Will certainly try AUGUSTINER BRÄUSTUBEN. Thanks for the tip.

lucy_d Nov 14th, 2006 06:04 PM

>>>>>>Hofbrauhaus
The Hofbraeuhaus is a nightmare! Waste of time.<<<<<

Totally agree. Take a picture of the facade; that's all.

ronin Nov 15th, 2006 07:28 AM

somebody's got a lot of free time and MAD foreign language skills! ;-) you win, Dieter!

If you only had 24 hours in any town, would you at least want to hit some highlights that'd give you a topical frame of reference to discuss your visit with others who had traipsed down the same path?

logos999 Nov 15th, 2006 08:06 AM

If you want to enjoy all the madness the town has to offer, Faschingsdienstag, February 20th 2007 is the day to be in Munich. You might get scared, how all those people suddenly behave. :-). I have seen people "staring in disbelief". What's going on here?

J_Correa Nov 15th, 2006 09:01 AM

We went to the Hofbrauhaus and had a good time, but it is definitely a crazy, touristy place. I don't think I would choose it if we were only in town for 24 hours though. Too many other great places. You might consider a walk through though, just to experience it - LOL. You can wander all around without anyone really noticing since it is such a busy, crazy place.

A little restautant we really liked is the Andecher am Dom - it is a small restaurant a block off Marienplatz (the main square in old town), right behind the Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady - I think that is the correct English translation). The beer served is from the Anchech's brewery outside of Munich and is very good. They have a nice outdoor seating area and tastey food. Others on this board recommended it as a good place close to the center of things and they were absolutely correct.

logos - we ate at the Hirschgarten a few times while we were there. Then I read about the meat scandal and it sort of grossed me out. All that stuff has been cleared up though, right?

logos999 Nov 15th, 2006 09:27 AM

>All that stuff has been cleared up though, right?
Last wednesday 8 tons were found in Munich and 1.5 tons in Aschaffenburg yesterday. Looks like finally they're doing their homework. However I'm sure it won't happen twice at the same place.

starfish1 Nov 15th, 2006 09:42 AM

Meat scandal? Please do tell!

logos999 Nov 15th, 2006 09:50 AM

It's been all over the papers during the last half year. Hundreds of tons of rotten meat being sold by Munich and Bavarian Forest companies. It's just the top of the iceberg but now it finally seems things are moving!

starfish1 Nov 15th, 2006 11:49 AM

Ewwwww, I guess it's not newsworthy in Canada - first I heard of it. Thanks for the heads up.

Bird Nov 15th, 2006 12:06 PM

Logos,

Do Germans really love Chevy Chase, or are you pulling our fingers?

Starfish, walk through the Hofbrauhaus, but stop somewhere else for the food & beer.

logos999 Nov 15th, 2006 12:20 PM

>love Chevy Chase
Germans love those real life, realistic doctumentaries, Chevy Chase made. "National Lampoon" is just a great picture of real, down to earth american everyday life. The "european holiday" movie was very interesting too... It's to Germans what "The Sound of Music" is to Americans. ;-)

JN Nov 15th, 2006 01:00 PM

We enjoyed Schloss Nymphenburg, Marienplatz and, because we enjoy impressionist art, the Neue Pinakotek, which is on the route toward Nymphenburg.

For restaurants, we loved the Andechser Am Do JCorea mentioned, and the Hackerhaus on Sendlingerstrasse, just off Marienplatz. Great food and beer and old world german feel.

J_Correa Nov 15th, 2006 01:13 PM

I liked the Hackerhaus too. It was a really neat place. We sat outside because it was so darned hot, but I walked through and it is a terrific place inside. My husband really enjoyed the food, thought the beer was ok, but not terrific. My stomach was bothering me that day, so I wasn't a good judge of the food. I guess I will just have to go back and try it again :)
