Madrid – Tuesday, November 12, 2019

Our last day in Spain was spent in Madrid. We had an early admission to the Royal Palace and armory (24 Euros for two), where it was interesting to see how the weapons and protective equipment for men and horses evolved over time. It was a beautiful place and I regretted only being able to take photos in a few areas but I understood that was sensible given that the royal family does reside there. We had hoped to walk to the Temple of Debod but there was a lot of construction that Google Maps didn’t seem to know about and we weren’t able to find our way there. We did find the Plaza de Espana, and from there walked the length of the Gran Via, noting the change in the architecture from decade to decade. We continued on to the Fountain of Cibeles and the Puerta de Alcala, and then to Retiro Park, which was resplendent in fall color. From there we took the Metro from Estacion del Artes to Puerta del Sol. We had an enjoyable late lunch at Pans (10 Euros), and while my husband returned to our hotel room to pack for our departure from Spain the following day, I walked along Calle de Alcala to the Sevilla Metro station and a little beyond, happily snapping photos of the buildings I passed along the way. That night we had an excellent dinner at El Sur (26 Euros) and enjoyed chatting with a college student from my husband’s home town who was doing his semester abroad in Madrid.

Miles walked 6.46 miles

Hotel (in Madrid) 84 Euros

Lunch 10 Euros

Dinner 26 Euros

Admissions(Churches) 24 Euros

The Royal Palace and Almudena Cathedral - Madrid

There were so many beautiful rooms that we weren't able to photograph but these pictures will give you a taste of what there is to see. Do book ahead as the line for those purchasing tickets was long even in the early morning. We only bought our tickets online the day before our visit but we were traveling in shoulder season. We didn't have time to go in Almudena Cathedral but captured some photos of the facade.

I hope you visited the area just north of Retiro..the most beautiful and elegant part of Madrid..filled with galleries, leafy streets, upscale shops and restaurants ( called Salamanca)
We visit Madrid every year and alway stay in that part of the city.

danon - We only had a day and a half in Madrid so we could just hit the highlights. We ventured a block or two north of El Retiro just briefly. Perhaps we'll get to return some day, although there are many more places on our bucket list that we haven't visited yet. We'll see! Thanks for coming along and sharing our experience. I'll be posting the last of the photos from Madrid tomorrow.

I love your photos of Toledo and Madrid. We were fortunate to be able to spend one night in Toledo. It's such a beautiful city! We loved the train ride, too! So much fun and we loved the view from across the river. Our hotel was just inside the Bisagra Gate!

We really enjoyed Madrid, too, and we were very impressed with the Royal Palace. Some people don't recommend going there because they don't think it's worthwhile, but I disagree with those people. Your palace photos are beautiful! We loved Retiro Park, too, and were disappointed we didn't have time to visit the Salamanca neighborhood that Danon mentions.

Thank you so much for continuing on with your trip report during these trying times. We all need something enjoyable and fun to read and to think about. I am very sad because we are cancelling our April trip to France. It's not just a vacation, but a visit to our daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren who live in southern France. I am so disappointed. We haven't seen them since October, and now we are not sure when we can see them again. So your trip report is uplifting and just what I need! Thank you!

Beautiful pictures! Reminds me of my trip I did a couple of years back. Loved every bit of it.

KarenWoo - Thanks as always for your encouraging words. Thinking about the wonderful time we had in Spain and looking at the photos lifts my spirits, too. I'm so sorry that you won't be able to visit your family in France. It's so hard to be far apart in such perilous times, though our daughter and grandchildren live only an hour away and we're not seeing each other except by video chat as she is concerned that they might pose some risk to us as we are in the "old and vulnerable group." As I was reminded long ago, "This too shall pass." Stay well :-)

A Walk from Puerta del Sol to Sevilla Metro

I was curious to see what lay between Puerta del Sol and the Sevilla Metro so I took a little stroll along Calle de Alcala to admire the architecture.

Afelaidean - I did appreciate your comments and encouragement and hope that you'll be able to visit Spain when the present crisis settles. I'll look forward to reading your trip report one day! Be well!

Adelaidean - I haven't been back to this thread in months and just saw your post. We were pleasantly surprised by the weather, too. I was gloriously sunny and just warm enough. Thanks for your comment on the light. Sometimes I wish I ha a fancier camera but but the photos are mostly for capturing memories as I forget so quickly.
