Hey ScottB,

You must offend easy since you took exception to my post as well as the thoughts of others.

It is not offensive to offer opinions regarding personal values. For example: it's a person's right to spend $100K or more for a tricked out Escalade but it's also my right to express my outrage at someone who hogs more than their share of gasoline, pollutes the air needlessly, and consumes outrageous amounts of resources SOLELY BECAUSE THEY CAN AFFORD IT.

Specific to this particular example if you have the cash and want to spend it in such an irresponsible way, go for it. Just don't come to a public forum and expect that everyone will relate to such extravagance.

mm, do you travel? what price per night/day/week would you find acceptable to spend on traveling or a vacation?

Tuxedocat Aug 5th, 2005 07:42 AM

Diana: I'm too drunk on Cristal to get off my bear skin rug to make it to Necker. You'll have to rage on without me. Give my best to Richard... Glad to see some folks are retaining their sense of humor regardless of their personal values. BTW, it is my cat.

lovethecape Aug 5th, 2005 08:01 AM

I thought this was a travel forum. Joan is looking for advice for a resort and gave her price range. She also states she's not into more rustic accomodations which can also fall into her price range. It's as simple as that. It is a frame of reference for people to respond to. I've seen many posts where people say they can spend a certain amount of $$$ (which happen to be lower). What's the difference? Joan enjoys a luxurious vacation and chooses to spend her hard earned cash on it. Stick to giving advice and not judgements.

MarionCK Aug 5th, 2005 08:06 AM

We're up to 44 responses to Joan. Some posts were judgemental, most were not.

I think the point here now, is that Joan has yet to respond to anyone.

Hell no I don't travel. I sit in front of my computer about, say, 18 hours per day just about year-round. When I'm not looking at porn or passing judgement on Fodor's posters I pretty much spend time stuffing my face with sub sandwiches and Funny Bones. Oh yeah, I drink a lot of diet Cokes too.

Now if'n I did travel I'd say 'bout 25 per day would do the trick.

I guess mm is getting the rap for what a few of us were thinking ..... Just because you have X amt. of $$ does not mean you HAVE to spend it ..... But then again , its their hard earned money , they can spend it as they please !!! Who's right ??? Dunno ... Everyones idea of excess and extravagence is different . But I don't think you need "marble bathrooms" nor " upscale clientelle " .... I am certain Joan meant that part tounge in cheek , lol !!! These places are indeed out there , lots of people must pay it !!

Diana Aug 5th, 2005 09:00 AM

"I dread the time when that innocence is gone and believe me it is coming much too quickly."

vinceygirl, that is so true. Revisiting an island five or ten years after the first trip can really be an eye-opener. Da$% satellite TV! X(

We have friends on Tobago. Their teen son just graduated from school and got his first job. He took his first paycheck and bought some new clothes.

He got a neat black and white hat. The first time he wore it, another boy took it off his head. When Darren asked about it, a friend of the first boy's came up behind him and smashed Darren in the head with a bottle - cutting him.

Luckily, he is OK, but his parents told me that crime is getting bad there among the young people. Very sad.

tux - You are a riot! I'll think of you when I am packing all of my 98 matching Louis Vuitton suitcases for Necker. ((k)) (Richard will be DEVASTATED you are not coming. ((u))

lovethecape - As we frequent fodors contributors are not compensated for our services, and therefore not subject to "the customer is always right" credo, people who choose to post may have to deal with editorializing along with the aforementioned sage advice. Your telling us how to respond properly is editorializing as well. :>

mm,

In your post you said: "It is not offensive to offer opinions regarding personal values"
I agree, to a point. Offering opinions is just fine, but when they become judgemental, it's just wrong. Who are you to judge anyone for whatever reason?

If you think I'm offended, you're wrong again. Just sticking up for someone who didn't deserve the negative response she received. Just my "personal values" I guess.

sailor Aug 5th, 2005 09:39 AM

mm, I was being sincere with my question of what you would find an acceptable amount to spend on travel or vacation for a week? Just trying to figure at what level the dollors spent per day/week/year become sinful?

faithie Aug 5th, 2005 09:59 AM

Perhaps we should just start a new thread so poor Joan ( I am sincere ) is out of it !!! She is probably a bit shocked at the commotion , Hopefully she has a base to start looking . New thread would be , " What is the most YOU would pay per night / for a room and why lol , !!!! No wise cracks please ! It would be interesting to see the responses .... As I previously stated , it is indeed a personal thing , everyone has their comfort zone as far as what they feel is " O.K. " . Mine would be about $300.00 MAX. , that would give "me" all the luxury I need !

faithie Aug 5th, 2005 10:02 AM

Feel the need to be honest and clarify .... I have not yet had to spend that .

MarionCK Aug 5th, 2005 10:07 AM

Dear Faith,

Ever the peacemaker, and always done with great dignity :-)

I think I've said before your children are blessed to have a mother who speaks rationally and kindly and walks the earth softly :-)

A new thread is a grand idea ! Although, I fear that when we speak about $$ there will always be judgements. But we can try...eh ?

Marion

faithie Aug 5th, 2005 10:32 AM

Thanx Marion ! Indeed , threads like the one I suggested ( tounge in cheek as well ) usually create a lot of debate ..... But at least it would take the heat off Joan , and become more of a general , interesting , casual kind of thing !!!! lol . And hey ! Lets be honest , I LOOOOVE looking at these places !!!! Faith .

ejcrowe Aug 5th, 2005 02:22 PM

Hmmm, I wasn't going to respond to this thread since I feel that I stirred the chili a little too vigorously on a controversial thread earlier this summer...but I must say that I've found it very entertaining to read all the way through the 50+ messages.

I guess I fall somewhere between the two camps if I'm totally honest with myself. If I could afford luxury like that it would be a nice change of pace once in a while, but most of the time I'm not at all that interested in how the other half vacations. ;)

Diana, since Tuxedocat can't make it, I was thinking that if you book Necker Island, I'll book Little Thatch and we can meet halfway in our mega-yachts for some G&Ts or a Pimm's cup. Anybody else care to join us?

vinceygirl Aug 5th, 2005 03:07 PM

ejcrowe does your mega liner have room for my private helicopter to land? Sounds like it could be quite a party, don't want to miss it.

ejcrowe Aug 5th, 2005 03:09 PM

honey, i'll reserve one of my 3 helipads for your exclusive use. glad you can join the pah-ty.

Diana Aug 5th, 2005 03:25 PM

ej and vincey, my mega-yacht is going to be in for repair in dry dock on my private island off Mustique, but I can come on my dinghy.

Please don't tell anyone. I'd be appalled for them to know it's a 2005 - not 2006 - Cigarette. My 2006 is still on order because I COULD NOT decide on which one of my yachts to match the pinstriping and graphics to.

Decisions decisions...

MarionCK Aug 5th, 2005 03:29 PM

Well EJ, now that you describe it as a "pahty" rather than just a party, I'd love to be there !

Tuxedocat's suggestion of Cristal has been in my mind, not yet on my palate ;-)

I'll gave to bring some Grey Goose as I still have an aversion to gin.

Any bets on how long it will take this Friday night entertainment to be deleted ?

We should be ashamed of ourselves ;-) !

Marion

faithie Aug 5th, 2005 03:59 PM

Why .... I could bring the " shine " ..... now that would start the party !!! Would you also consider Little Thatch Island if Necker was not available ????
