Sorry - I'm just now seeing your follow up question! We did leave the resort, but not on our own. The resort offered a (free) bicycle tour to Puerto Morelos, a 15-20 minute ride from the resort. We had about an hour to walk around the town before heading back. We also did a guided tour of Mayan ruins and a ceynote, but I booked that separately, not through Excellence.
