Favorite Island

What is your favorite island and why is it your choice?

MarionCK Jun 26th, 2006 01:17 PM

Manhattan :-) ! Always has been and always will be. Lincoln Center, Broadway...all the museums and the ethnic restaurants. The beautiful people and the not so beautiful people with the accents and cultures of the world...a daily challenge to the senses.

Now, if we could just bring in some talcum powder sand and some of that multi-hued water :-)

well then...
since we're not talking Caribbean islands, I vote Venice! ;)

mahobaygirl Jun 26th, 2006 04:19 PM

Since I have not traveled Europe, and am from Maine where our islands (and the Provinces of Canada) are sticky, hazy and cool...
I am definatley going Caribbean! Jost Van Dyke and St. John are tied. Probably if I had to spend more than a few days, STJ, but I am sooo inlove with White Bay!

mahobaygirl Jun 26th, 2006 04:24 PM

oops, I did not say why, the beaches, the white sand, unbelieveably turquoise water, the great snorkeling steps from the beach, The beaches lined with seagrape and palm trees with a huge hill/mountain right behind it.
And JVD, White Bay and Soggy Dollar Bar with their Painkillers and Seddy's where you can get your own beer behind the bar!

i ditto...st. john usvi & jost bvi..my two best. we had been going to st. john for a few yrs...took a day trip to jost..well we fell in love with it!! 2 different islands..st. john is larger, with some of the most beautiful beaches, lots of restaurants for all budgets, great bars to hang out in ! very casual place,no need to bring the high heels, just relax and meet some great people !! jost is small, white bay is stunning, enjoy the people there..so friendly and they remember you ! sandcastles is a piece of heaven, so is ivans...love that man !! talk about laid back !! if you don't mind a bit"rustic" this is the place..corsairs,abes,ali babas, seddys, bubbly pool and walking barefoot through great harbour and be able to walk into a restaurant and sit down without them !!

Virgin Gorda, Harbour Island, Tobago, Bermuda are my top 4. But I can't forget swimming from the sailboat to soggy dollar. What a wonderful memory

SAnParis Jun 27th, 2006 04:23 AM

Montserrat - I can't explain it, you just need to go there. The people are most of the reason why though...Holden Beach - Memories, been going for 40+ years. Iceland - the unknown (to date).

We had our best time in Fiji. Why? All was so good there including the natural beauty, the very friendly people, great weather (July), its cleanliness and at least then it was a bargain. This was 2001 when the USD was much stronger. BTW to the OP what is your favorite "java". I assume you are a coffee lover by your name. Have you tried Gevalia? Thats my fav. Cheers. Larry :-)

JAGIRL Jun 27th, 2006 05:38 AM

SAnParis,
Sounds like you went to Montserrat recently. What was it like? Did you do a Trip Report?

SAnParis Jun 27th, 2006 06:00 AM

It's on here, I'll top it.

GoTravel Jun 27th, 2006 06:17 AM

Definitely the Out Islands of the Bahamas, the Abacos.

jacketwatch Jun 27th, 2006 06:55 AM

GoTravel: Can you recommend a hotel on the Out islands? Thank you. Larry

bora bora (shallow, beautiful, clear, turquoise water in their lagoons, good snorkeling), and stj coming in second (beautiful water, good snorkeling, pretty beaches)

HowardC Jun 27th, 2006 08:38 AM

Anguilla fpr the beaches, accomodations, restaurants and most of all the people. Second choice Provo in The Turks and Caicos.

mnag Jun 27th, 2006 10:17 AM

Anguilla for its gorgeous beaches/water and restaurants (and maybe also a little because it was my first caribbean experience).

Mycuppajava Jun 27th, 2006 10:39 AM

Yes, Gevalia is great coffee. I like Starbucks also with a little half & half please!

Mycuppajava Jun 27th, 2006 10:42 AM

Sounds as if St. John is tops over all. Is this the feeling here? I want to go to the BEST of the Carribbean with BEST prices as well. Don't know if they both come with the same order. :) I have never been, just a wannabe...so, please let me hear your comments!!

jackiehammond Jun 27th, 2006 10:54 AM

well i don't think you'll find the best prices in stj, but it is a beautiful place. i think it depends on what exactly you are looking for. i was looking for a relaxing place, private, good snorkeling, hiking, beachfront. that cost me over $700/night for a premium beachfront room on scott beach at caneel bay resort...worth every penny for that view though. :) good luck!

GoTravel Jun 27th, 2006 12:04 PM

jacketwatch, Green Turtle is probably the most popular. That or Marsh Harbor.
