Bioluminescent Bay

i was looking for some info on bio bay in pureto rico. i had heard that the bioluminescent's had been damaged due to light pollution?
we are going on a kayak tour of bio bay.
i wanted to know if anyone had stories or pictures of it. i want to know how neat, cool, or amazing it is/was.

There are three bioluminiscent bays in Puerto Rico. Which one are you planning to visit?

we have booked a bio bay kayak tour through shore trips and i do believe that it takes us to the other side of the island in fajardo or something like that.

We took the kayak trip in Fajardo last March and loved it. I am not sure what damage you are referring to....it certainly looked great to us. Unfortunately, we were there on a night with lots of moonlight, so we did not get the full effect, but they put a tarp over the kayaks for a bit so you could experience what it would look like in complete darkness. It was one of the highlights of our trip, actually. Unfortunately, we do not have pictures.

bc,

Were you able to swim in the bay? We are going to be in the area over Christmas, and trying to figure out which trip to book. Thanks!

No, we did not swim. The Fajardo biobay (Laguna Grande) does not allow swimming for ecological reasons (see below).I am not sure but I believe the biobay in Vieques does allow swimming.

"Effective in April 2007, the Puerto Rico Department of Natural Resources no longer allows swimming in the lagoon. Though some rogue operators do allow it, be advised that, if the authorities see you swimming, there can be heavy fines levied against both the swimmer and the tour operator."

bc is correct, there is no swimming allowed in the biobay in Fajardo. You can swim in the biobay of Vieques though. East Island Excursions takes a fast cat over to the island and the evening includes dinner. My in-laws just went and LOVED it! It's a bit more pricey than the kayaks in Fajardo, but worth every penny! Enjoy our island paradise. Oh, and don't forget to check the phase of the moon before you go, if it's full, don't bother. In fact, the reputable tour operators won't even take you out.

Thanks, prinsider! I checked the calendar and we're booked for December 30th in Vieques.

The bio bay trip in Vieques was the highlight of our June trip! We did the pontoon boat trip and loved it!!

Weadles Nov 21st, 2008 02:55 AM

I think it will be a highlight of our trip, too! Only thing I'm not crazy about is that you with East Winds you have to go to a "local dinner" first. We'd rather just go straight to the bay.

Weadles, I just replied to your other thread. We're going to the biobay on Dec30th too but as we're staying on Vieques we'll skip the dinner.
