Bermuda (Hamilton) restaurant recommendations?
 

We are headed to Bermuda Saturday for a long weekend, and I'm looking for restaurant recommendations. We will be staying in Hamilton at the Fairmont Princess, so we'd like to have places to walk to for dinner at night. We're staying for 3 nights. We like all kinds of food, especially seafood. Thanks!

You are in luck, some of the best restaurants are in Hamilton. I would recommend Ascots at the Royal Palms, just up the hill from the Princess. You may want to reserve before you go to BDA as it will be busy on the weekend. For a fun meal try the HogPenny Pub. Little Venice has good Italian. Harbourfront has just opened in the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Museum. It is a very popular sushi restaurant formerly on Front Street. I admit that I am not crazy about Port O'Call, but it is highly recommended by many of my friends. Another very popular spot for seafood is the Lobster Pot. For an absolutely delicious light meal go to the Lemon Tree on the corner of Par La Ville Park.
I highly recommend you take a ferry ride over to Darrells Wharf and walk up the hill to Fourways. Their Sunday brunch is amazing! Dinner is first rate.
It would require a bus or cab ride (unless you are renting scooters) but Henry VIII has just reopened on the south shore. Lunch or tea at the Lighthouse Tea Room at Gibbs Lighthouse is in the same area and very nice.

I agree with cmcfong Hamilton has it all. Interesting news that Harbourfront moved,I have not been there in a few years. Ascots has gotten too busy for me, and lost some of its ambiance--but it is a popular spot. My favorite is The Waterloo House, and its so close to your hotel. The chef has worked at The French Laundry in California, and La Manior one of the best restaurants in
England. Its on the top of our list
for our upcoming trip!

I think almost everyone who goes to Bermuda always enjoys the Hog Penny.
The Lobster Pot is always a good choice-
and I prefer the bar area room. I agree Little Venice is very good. I have only been to Port O Call once---I did enjoy it. Another personal favorite on Chauncery Lane is Frescos---the small intimate covered garden area is very nice.

Your hotel concierge probably has
menus for most of the restaurants.

Penny, I am so glad you pointed out the Waterloo House. That was an oversight on my part. I always have at least one meal there. It is a lovely place.

The Harbourfront moved into La Coquille's space at BUEI fairly recently.

cmcfong-I thought you might have forgotten
it on your list. Bermuda does have some
great dining places for sure and The Waterloo House is right at the top.

BTW- I took your recommendation about
renting mopeds at Elbow Beach. They were so nice when I phoned them. We always rent from Oleander--but this is
closer to The Surfside---and give that
personal touch!

YES!!! Waterloo House is a must. Eat out on the Terrace. We stay at Horizons & Cottages their sister property who also serves a fine meal.
We are planning to dine at BLU in Belmont. Does anyone have a comment on this new resterant????

I tried Blu when I was in BDA this past December. I was not planning to eat a heavy meal and I got there rather early. The service was quite good and very well informed. The food was good, the homemade ice cream was fantastic. I will go back on my next visit. Do post your opinion when you return, bermudatriangle. Also, what is your favorite cottage at Horizons?

Have gone to Horizons on & off over past 10 years....My favorite Cottage is Sea Venture (2br/suite) when we travel with another couple. It is down the hill from the pool & on the path to Coral Beach. We like the private location away from the main house so we can entertain ourselves in our own living area/lanai's with drinks & conversation. Of course the view ain't bad either & we park our cycles at the door. Also a great Maid.
If it's just the two of us, then we opt for SeaCloud #3 (Jr. Suite) great central location & my favorite maid, Jean who cooks a fabulous breakfast! This has been recently updated, but on the pricey side. (WE USE A TRAVEL MEMBERSHIP DISCOUNT)
Garland's #1 is a big standard room and for the money is a good choice, located across from the entrance to the main house, you have a vista over the golf course & down to the sea. The room is charming & has access to a small patio, a general courtyard & a common lounge room in the corner of that building. Last year the food at breakfast was delivered from the main house as their wasn't a full-time Maid for Garland's?? My friend accidentally broke the sink (LONG STORY) so that's all that's be recently updated.
I plan on touring the single uppdated Skylark & caribee cottages when we are there July 7th - 14th. Regards

I will look forward to your trip report and the details about the updating. I have been visiting Bermuda since the early 1970's and have stayed at many different properties. I tend to choose based on whether DH is with me and time of year. Last December I stayed at Watercolours, which I liked quite a bit. I was the only guest and it was a great location. As to restaurants, I love Fourways (often stay there as well), Waterloo, Ascots, and I used to like the Bistro at La Coquille, but it has now closed. I envy you your trip, I can't wait to get back!

We are just noe deciing whether to stay an 8th night. So maybe then we could go to Fourways for dinner.

What a wonderful choice. I will say that the Fourways Sunday buffet is quite fabulous, too.

Chaplins Bay and I met Cookie who use to
be the elegant tall doorman at the restaurant. Just like you we have been
going since the early seventies.

I might add The Fourways to our list this trip.
Also I have never been to Coconuts,
any thoughts.

We have stayed at a few places-but we
love the Surfside. If they build that
huge hotel Southlands we will give up
on the Surfide--and try and get a contact so we can stay at the Coral Beach. Bermudatriangleclub-I would love The Horizons but I want the view and the beach. Thanks for the great info. If you need any info on Anguilla we go 3 times a year. Its nice to have inside information.

Add me to the list of those wishing they had a contact at Coral Beach. Because I occasionally stay at Waterloo I have had the opportunity to go to the beach, spa, and restaurant there, but wow, would I love to stay there! What a view.

love the view!!!!

Oh-and we looked into fractional ownership
at Tucker's Point, but its not the location we want. So Horizon's is going
into that too--and Ariel Sands will also
become a private enclave club.

Did you go by and look at those Ariel Sands units? I thought they were pretty unattractive. I wish I could interest DH in a Bermuda residence, but he is a born and bred NC mountain man. Guess I will have to content myself with a trip or two a year. Happy travels, Penny.

Hello ~We are excited to be planning a family trip to Bermuda. Here is the list of reservations I've made so far. Anyone suggest I skip any of these or add any others? We want a few nice, dressy nights out but smart casual is our theme for the trip. Any opinions?

You have made some really good choices. Just a couple of observations and suggestions.
Aggie's Garden - Breakfast -their food is great and they are located literally right on the harbor so it is fun to sit outside and enjoy watching the ships while you eat. the portions are quite small.

If you want to walk to dinner, Waterloo House is right next door to the Princess and is very good. Make reservations. Another easily walkable dinner choice would be Ascots.



Lighthouse Tearoom - This is a fun place to stop if for nothing else the incredible view. I like the food for lunch, they always have quite good soups and salads.
Tom Moore's Tavern - Dinner-the food is good but it is a long ride from the Princess.
Fourways - consider Sunday brunch here, very good, reservations essential. Take the ferry and walk up the hill. Lovely way to have an evening out.

I would also add the Lemon Tree to your choices for breakfast or lunch. The food is very good and it is fun to sit in the park and enjoy it. It will be a short walk from your hotel, left out the front door, left at the Irish Linen Shop (at the birdcage) and it will be on your left next door to the post office.

Major OOOPS. Go right out of the hotel to head towards the Lemon Tree. So sorry, chalk it up to an aging mind.

Yes, I am sure you will be able to get around easily. Bermuda has a first class public transportation system. Have a wonderful trip.

Make sure your husband packs a sports coat or jacket for dinner at Horizon's.....unless it's a Friday night casual BBQ. Hope you make advance reservation's for dinner at most of your named choices. Last...Gibbs Lighthouse open for Breakfast??????

My wife and I just returned from Bermuda. The Barracuda Grill next to the Hog Penny was the best dinner on our trip. Highly recommended by 2 locals.

citychic, a little of this information is out of date. Waterloo is closed as is Aggie's Garden. Some of the new players in the great food circuit are Blu, Beau Rivage, Tucker's Point, Mad Hatters, and the Dining Room at the Gibbs Lighthouse.
