Toronto GTG , 2008 !!!

HI everyone. It's so difficult to arrange a date that is good for everyone... so I'm throwing this out really early.

Any Fodorites out there that might be planning a trip to Toronto this year and would like to meet a fun loving group?

goddesstogo Jan 28th, 2008 12:34 PM

Hi kodi,
I'd love to come this time! Except for the last week of April (which includes the first few days of May), I'll be around.

I'm generally good for any night except Mondays and Wednesdays, and even those might work for me, depending on when we do it.

Can I suggest that you put this on the lounge as well?

Ohboy ohboy ohboy! A Toronto GTG!

moolyn Jan 28th, 2008 01:48 PM

kodi, I've been thinking the same thing, that we should set a date way ahead so people can plan their travels. I'd be happy to work with you on this again.

Toedtoes Canada trip this year is to Nova Scotia, unfortunately for us.

kodi Jan 28th, 2008 01:58 PM

Goddess, yes, I'll put it on the lounge too. Good idea.

Thanks, Moolyn... hopefully by planning ahead, we'll be able to get a date good for everyone.

SallyCanuck Jan 28th, 2008 02:00 PM

Add me.

LJ Jan 28th, 2008 04:41 PM

A) Kodi: I am SOOOO up for a TO GTG!If I can be of any help, count me in!
B) Moolyn: I have not had the opportunity to meet Toedtoes, but Nova Scotia is my second home and I would LOVE to assist this enthusiastic traveler in any way that I can...please feel free to pass along my real email to her if you wish (I am Lee from the Church Street GTG)

kodi Jan 28th, 2008 05:28 PM

Thanks for signing in, ladies!

BTW, I'll be away in April and also in Sept. I think the last 2 weeks in Sept, but I have to double check with Toedtoes . I have to make sure she's home from Nova Scotia , so I can see her when I get to California.

teacherCanada Jan 28th, 2008 06:01 PM

kodi, thanks for opening the door to ideas for a GTG. I'll do my best to participate. I am away from March 6 - 21 with my school group travelling in France and Spain, but have flexibility after that.

klam_chowder Jan 28th, 2008 06:47 PM

sounds like fun...I might head to Toronto for it if I'm in town and it's on a weekend.

Enjoy-la!

LoveItaly Jan 28th, 2008 10:58 PM

Hi there Kodi, I decided to come to the Canada Board. I so wish I could join in with the Toronto GTG but you know I am so looking forward to seeing you here in September! I am counting the days..well months actually.

kodi Jan 29th, 2008 04:31 AM

Love, I'll make you a deal! I'll see you in California in Sept, and then you can come to the 2009 Toronto GTG!!!

tedgale Jan 29th, 2008 05:19 AM

Moolyn has already emailed me about this thread, so I am now following up.

I live in Ottawa so it is not entirely certain I CAN make it. Anyway, as a newbie I would expect to fit in with the plans of the organizers and the core participants.

So don't bother unduly about what does or doesn't suit me....

The dates I CANNOT come are March and (probably) mid-September to mid-October.

wow Jan 29th, 2008 09:10 AM

Hi, Kodi! Great idea! I will be away the last week of Feb & most of March.
Looking forward to a To GTG! ;)

toedtoes Jan 29th, 2008 10:00 AM

I wanna come!!!! I wanna! I wanna! I wanna!

Tedgale - if you can make it, do go. This is a great bunch of people - not one axe murderer in the bunch! Well, except for.... :-d

I'm already missing Ontario. I HAVE to do Nova Scotia this year - it's a family heritage thing - but I so want to come back home. I need to go back to Niagara Falls, and I need to go to the CN Tower and stand on the glass floor again (maybe this time I'll actually look down). I need to go to Manitoulin Island. I need to go back to Ottawa and Peterborough and Port Pery and Perth (what's up with the p?). I need to eat at a chip wagon and eat a Harvey's veggie burger. I need to snack on ketchup chips (yep, I'm hooked). I need to hop the TTC downtown. I need to sit on the edge of a lake and commune with nature. I need to gaze into the flowing current at Niagara Falls. I need to do it all now!

SallyCanuck Jan 29th, 2008 11:01 AM

Gasp! You don't have ketchup chips!

toedtoes Jan 29th, 2008 11:08 AM

I know Sally - it's a sad state of world events that we don't have ketchup chips. I need to do a search and see if I can order them online. I brought home a big bag, but I've gone through them already.

SallyCanuck Jan 29th, 2008 11:41 AM

And no salt 'n vinegar, I believe. oh dear oh dear

I can send you a care package.

goddesstogo Jan 29th, 2008 11:51 AM

I don't think they have all dressed either. Poor sods.

toedtoes Jan 29th, 2008 12:15 PM

We do have salt & vinegar, but not all dressed up.

I looked into ordering ketchup chips online, but the shipping costs more than the chips (and the chips weren't cheap).

Perhaps we can work out a trade - I'll send something we have that you don't and you send me ketchup chips... surely there's SOMETHING you want that you can't get...

goddesstogo Jan 29th, 2008 12:17 PM

sunshine? warm weather? seashore?

I'll deliver the damn chips myself! :-D

SallyCanuck Jan 29th, 2008 01:22 PM

I want FREEDOM from work but doubt you can obtain it from me.

I'll think about it though.

Chat about chips makes me hungry.

SallyCanuck Jan 29th, 2008 01:23 PM

I meant "for" me.

toedtoes Jan 29th, 2008 01:46 PM

Goddess - today I'm afraid I can't give you warm weather and sunshine... it's yucky here and will be for the rest of the week.

Sally - would you like to borrow the horse-dog? He strained his shoulder so I had to stay home with him today to keep him off it. I'm sure he would be happy to help.

kodi Jan 29th, 2008 04:34 PM

Toed hang in there til Sept. I'll bring you a care package!!

As for the GTG, I'm thinking the summer time looks good. Most have plans for other times of the year.
What does everyone think? We could be sitting out on a nice patio on a beautiful summer evening.Just think about it.. warm weather... cool drinks..lots of laughs.

And what about a weekend evening so out of towners can make it?

goddesstogo Jan 29th, 2008 04:37 PM

Sounds good to me, kodi. At this point, we have no plans for the summer. We might go away for the occasional long weekend and, unfortunately, those would be the best weekends for the out-of-towners to come in. Still, I'm sure we could work something out and I really, really want to come this time.

I'm already picturing the patio, the summer evening, the vodka mohito...sigh.

kodi Jan 29th, 2008 04:51 PM

I think we should perhaps aim for one of the middle weekends in July or August. I think maybe too many people have plans on long weekends.

Ahhh, keep dreaming of the warm summer evening on the patio!!!

AnselmAdorne Jan 29th, 2008 04:52 PM

"We could be sitting out on a nice patio on a beautiful summer evening.Just think about it.. warm weather... cool drinks..lots of laughs."

Kodi, we have summers? I'm trying to remember what they look and feel like!

But seriously, summer would be perfect.

Anselm

tedgale Jan 29th, 2008 05:08 PM

Anselm: 20 degrees C. today, here in Savannah,

We depart for Ottawa on Thursday morning.

I had forgotten we have WINTER -- but I guess I'll have a sharp re-introduction to climatic realities, on our return. Yecch! Fortunately we head off to Rome, Tuscany and Paris, early in March.

kodi Jan 29th, 2008 05:41 PM

Ahh, Tedgale, I love Savannah. I hope you are enjoying your beautiful weather. You are in for a shock when you get back home.

You see, Amselm already forgets what summer feels like!

Try hard Anselm, try real hard. Close your eyes and picture it, from a long time ago!

LJ Jan 30th, 2008 07:18 AM

Summer, weekend, patio: all sounds fantastic...just please NOT the first two weeks of July...its the only time I know for sure I cannot come and I am so looking forward to renewing acquaintance with some and meeting others!

kodi Jan 30th, 2008 12:46 PM

How about we aim for a Saturday in August?
That gives us the 9th, 16 or 23rd .
IT's a good starting point.
How fast can it come? Today is brutal out there.

nfldbeothuk Jan 30th, 2008 01:51 PM

I looked at this earlier, but assumed it wouldn't possibly be at any time when I'd be in Ontario. But if it were in the summer I might be seriously tempted, since I am sometimes in Toronto in July or August (I'm usually the one fanning herself and sweating!)
Now, would I have the courage to encounter all these hip urbanites in the flesh?
Can I show up and deny all knowledge of my screen name?
Do people remember all the foolish remarks and typos everyone else ever made?
But it would be fascinating to see the people who've been everywhere...and ask them where to go next.

kodi Jan 30th, 2008 05:56 PM

Oh nfld, it would be really wonderful if you could make it.
I know exactly what you mean about having the courage to show up!!!
But believe me, everyone is down to earth and human!
Our 2007 GTG was more of a success than I hoped for.
Everyone was wonderful, and conversation flowed like we were all old friends.
I think I can speak for everyone in saying that we all had a really great time.

Please do try and come.

kodi Jan 30th, 2008 05:58 PM

nfld, did you by any chance read our report after the 2007 GTG? I can top it for you if you like. You'll see that we all had a great time.

Besides, I love Newfoundland and would love to hear more about it!!!

BAK Jan 30th, 2008 06:12 PM

I'll stay tuned.

BAK

LJ Jan 31st, 2008 07:53 AM

Hey, Nfldbeothuk: who do you think you are calling a 'hip urbanite'? Like most other current Torontonians, I am from somewhere else and it my case its NL. (Seriously, I really hope you can fit it in: our first meeting was great fun).

Mathieu Jan 31st, 2008 09:05 AM

All this weather talk, Kodi - well, its been raining in my neck of the woods and I've been Singin' In It ! :)

I'm not sure what my July and August weekends are like just yet but I should be around. If the date is set early enough, I can plan around that. Count me in, and I'm happy to help you with organising it.

nfldbeothuk Jan 31st, 2008 04:32 PM

Well, I really appreciated the friendly words.
Now I definitely hope this happens in July/August so I can plan to be in TO then. I have friends/ relatives there (it's a requirement--any Newfoundlander without a relative in Toronto must adopt one) and a weakness for Shakespeare in Stratford.

So I'll watch hopefully for news of when and where.

AnselmAdorne Jan 31st, 2008 05:09 PM

"... it's a requirement--any Newfoundlander without a relative in Toronto must adopt one"

I just burst out laughing.

nfldbeothuk, I really hope you can make it. Looking forward to meeting you.

And all this is making me think: I wonder whether we could persuade our compatriot laverendrye to attend???

Hi Kodi:

Wonderful! This time my husband Ron and I hope so much to be able to make the GTG.
We are in China for the month of March early April but other than that we will try our best to make it in to the city from Niagara.

regards,
Lynn
