Toronto Between 15-18 Feb 2008

Unexpected (but certainly not unwelcome) trip and wondered what the best source of information as to goings-on might be either on-line or in print. Arts, museums, etc.,

Thanks in advance.

SallyCanuck Feb 4th, 2008 07:18 AM

Hi - http://www.toronto.com/

Do you have boots? Warm ones....

SallyCanuck Feb 4th, 2008 07:20 AM

P.S. Surely you'll want to meet some Toronto Fodorites?

LJ Feb 4th, 2008 11:13 AM

If you are a music fan, you might want to check out this very useful resource: www.thewholenote.com

They have listings for every taste: from classical concerts to hip-hop, folk, jazz and salsa!

goddesstogo Feb 4th, 2008 12:29 PM

Dukey! Welcome to my city!

Check out www.nowtoronto.com -- it's a great little arts and entertainment newspaper. It's online and you can pick it up free at just about any restaurant or street corner. It comes out on Thursdays.

We'll be more help if you can tell us when you're coming, for how long, and whereabouts you're staying.

What you like to eat wouldn't hurt either.

goddesstogo Feb 4th, 2008 12:39 PM

Oops, just noticed the thread title. So you'll be here from Feb 15 to 18.

You probably should visit the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) and see the new addition. They call it the Crystal. Some call it the aluminum siding. There's a good dinosaur show there now and it's right across the street from the Ceramics Museum which is more interesting than it sounds.

Dukey Feb 4th, 2008 01:27 PM

Thanks to all for the great replies.
Yes, I have warm boots and sure I'd love to meet up with some other Fodorites.

Dukey Feb 4th, 2008 01:29 PM

To answer the other questions: I got a "couldn't refuse" room deal at the Marriott Eaton Centre (last times I was either at the Intercontinental-Yorkville or the one downtown near Union Station).

Food? Did you say FOOD???? Just about anything that isn't still moving or looking at me in the eye!

kodi Feb 4th, 2008 01:50 PM

Does this mean there will be a mini GTG? Count me in!

Dukey Feb 4th, 2008 01:56 PM

I'm game for one, cold or not. I'll even buy the first round of drinks.

SallyCanuck Feb 4th, 2008 02:00 PM

Me, too, if I can.

Dukey, do you have plans for any evening?

Dukey Feb 4th, 2008 02:07 PM

Two things...just got off the phone with a friend in Toronto...I'll have dinner with her and her mother one night but I can make that happen revolving around any possible meet-up with Fodorites so I'm wide open.

I just posted on the driving from Buffalo thread and it looks as if Tri-Dude is going to be in town the same weekend.

regardless, let's DO it!

goddesstogo Feb 4th, 2008 02:29 PM

I have to look at my calendar tomorrow. It's not that I'm such a social butterfly -- I just have no memory.

Are you leaving on Monday the 18th or staying over that night?

Dukey Feb 4th, 2008 02:39 PM

No, I arrive the afternoon of the 15th (Friday) and leave early on the morning of the 18th (Monday)

goddesstogo Feb 4th, 2008 03:00 PM

OK. I could have done Monday night for sure but maybe I can still join up over the weekend.

Dukey Feb 4th, 2008 03:10 PM

Keep me posted

mothersruin Feb 4th, 2008 03:24 PM

Great city, lots to do. Toronto.com is a good site but so is toronto.ca (city of toronto's official site). I'd recommend you see Queen Street, Yonge Street and Kensington Market--something a little off the "tourist agenda".

kodi Feb 4th, 2008 04:14 PM

I'm good any evening. So let's see what the calendar looks like for the others.

Tri_Dude Feb 4th, 2008 08:42 PM

Unfortunately my weekend is wrapped up with plans. I'm sure a mini GTG would be fun. I'll keep an eye out for where it will be and maybe I can sneak over.

SallyCanuck Feb 5th, 2008 05:43 AM

Thur or Friday best for me, possibly Saturday - was thinking of going to Ottawa for last weekend of Winterlude but that idea's not carved in stone.

Dukey Feb 5th, 2008 06:20 AM

Whatever is best for you I can make work for me...but please don't put off important plans..I'll be back in town later this year.

goddesstogo Feb 5th, 2008 07:13 AM

I can do lunch on Saturday. I'm going to the opera on Sunday afternoon, so I could either do lunch before (if we started early -- brunch maybe?) or dinner afterward.

Unfortunately, Friday and Saturday night are booked. Don't change your plans, though, if those are best for everyone else.

LJ Feb 5th, 2008 07:27 AM

I can do lunch on Saturday, too, if that is where this is headed?

Dukey Feb 5th, 2008 09:26 AM

I can do lunch on Saturday as well.

goddesstogo Feb 5th, 2008 10:29 AM

OK, if we're aiming for Saturday lunch, so far it's:

Dukey
Goddesstogo
LJ
SallyCanuck (possibly)

What about you, kodi?

And Kodi, what do you think about moolyn and the others who were at the last Toronto GTG?

QueScaisJe Feb 5th, 2008 01:19 PM

Another source of Toronto info (particularly for restaurants) is Toronto Life magazine, online at http://www.torontolife.com/

The Canadian International Autoshow is on...

kodi Feb 5th, 2008 01:56 PM

I'm working on it. I have to shuffle something in order to be available for lunch Sat. I don't think it will be a problem, so count me in for that time.

Goddess, I'll email Moolyn.

kodi Feb 5th, 2008 01:57 PM

Oh and LJ, I'm so glad you chimmed in!

kodi Feb 5th, 2008 03:49 PM

ok, I'm free for lunch on Sat.

Goddess, I emailed moolyn.

goddesstogo Feb 5th, 2008 04:41 PM

Yippee, it might be lunch on Saturday Feb 16!

Does that still work for you, Dukey? You're going to be the guest of honour, y'know!

What do you want to eat?

moolyn Feb 5th, 2008 06:57 PM

Thanks for thinking of me but I'll be away all that weekend. I'm sorry to miss a mini GTG but I'll be with my granchildren! Have fun!

Dukey Feb 6th, 2008 02:30 AM

Saturday the 16th definitely works for me. I'm not real picky about food..not much into sushi, tho, and don;t really want to be the "guest of honor" LOL but just another of several very wonderful people...you pick the place and time and I'll be there.

goddesstogo Feb 6th, 2008 05:59 AM

So, everybody? Restaurant suggestions?

SallyCanuck Feb 6th, 2008 08:16 AM

I can do lunch on the 16th so count me in.

Dukey is staying at EC Marriott so something in that area? Marriott have a restaurant and a bar but it's also close to lots of places including Chinatown, Bloor/Yonge, which makes me think of the Bloor Diner?

Dukey Feb 6th, 2008 08:42 AM

Absolutely NOT....YOU pick the place based on what you think is GOOD...I can get myself anywhere..doesn't have to be near the Marriott at all

goddesstogo Feb 6th, 2008 10:32 AM

Sally,
Funny that you should mention the Bloor Street Diner. I go there often because of the movie theatre upstairs but as of last week, it's off my list.

First of all, the friend I was with told me she'd seen a mouse last time she was there. Then at our dinner that night the table was dirty (after we'd been seated) and we had to ask to have it cleaned, my friend's napkin -- a paper one that should have just come out of the package -- had lipstick on it, and my smoked salmon, cheese and onion omelet had no smoked salmon in it. I don't mean not enough. I mean none. Zero. Zip. They just forgot to put it in at all!

Here are some suggestions for lunch and I'd be happy to hear others. These are just moderately-priced places and I've just suggested some of them to kelliebellie on another thread.

In the Market area, there's the Hot House Cafe(for variety), Le Papillion (for Bretonne-style crepes and a fireplace), SpringRolls (for pan-Asian). There's also a SpringRolls in the Atrium on Bay, right next to the Marriott. Also in the Atrium, is the Pickle Barrel (variety). In the Eaton Centre itself, there's the City Grill and Baton Rouge.

So there's some. Any other suggestions? Dukey, you've been here before, haven't you? Did you eat any place you particularly liked?

SallyCanuck Feb 6th, 2008 10:58 AM

Hot House Cafe is fine with me - any of them are.

Last time a group of us went to the Bloor Diner there was a live fly in my friend's salad - I forgot that when I suggested it. They seemed not to care too much either.

Dukey Feb 6th, 2008 11:05 AM

yes, I've been before and we ate at a couple of places in Yorkville but I cannot remember the names.

The place(s) you've suggested
sound(s) great (the one without the mouse!)..but I'm flexible..VERY flexible

goddesstogo Feb 6th, 2008 11:05 AM

Too bad that place has gone downhill so badly. It was really convenient.

What about you others? Any suggestions? Any preferences?

If I have a place name and a number of people, I'll make a reservation somewhere.

kodi Feb 6th, 2008 12:28 PM

Being from out of town, I'm not familiar with most of them.
Pan-Asian would be my very last choice though.

But I'm good with anything. You Torontonians decide. All the ones suggested sound good.
