To people living in Canada- Where do you go for summer vacations?
Just curious, as they had this question on the U.S. site? With our dollar not very good value in States just wondering where people go???
|
I am a travel agent from the east coast, and I sell a lot of airtickets to Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver, St. John's NF

The dollar and events of 9/11 certainly has made us think twice before travelling outside of Canada. Will probably stay in Nova Scotia this year and visit our own province for a change.
|
British Columbia. Vancouver Island, with a few days on Salt Spring. We go there every year - we love it - and will likely move there within a few years. I guess then we'll come to Ontario on our vacations!
|
For most people living in southern Ontario, they go up to north to so-called cottage county. There are thousands lakes in central Ontario, most children staying there for the whole summer. You shall see the traffic jams on highweays northern-bound Friday nights.

Ogunquit,Maine.Gorgeous beach & great walk on the Marginal Way.

I live in Toronto, but my family live in the lower mainland of BC, so we tend to go there for a summer vacation. A couple of years ago, we also went to Greece and Turkey. We had hoped to go back to Turkey this summer, but given the high airfares and the state of my bank account, we're staying in Canada this year instead. We've decided to go to Nova Scotia and New Brunswick - first time down east, so I'm excited about it. I'm always planning trips somewhere. I'll still be going to BC, but in November instead - to help my father celebrate his 80th birthday. And Turkey's still in the plans - hopefully next fall.

Summer is the one time where I like to stay put and not travel. Summer in Vancouver is beautiful - not too hot and often a long stretch without rain. Come fall, I head to Hawaii and California for vacation.

My office is inthe heart of the part of Toronto called The Entertainment District and there are vast numbers of Canadian tourists visiting this city all summer, plus lots of Americans, and a fair number of Europeans. It seems to me there were fewer Japanese last summer; we'll have to see what happens this year.

Regardless of the exchange rate, many Eastern Canadians with children drive to Florida in the summer. Westerners, although it seems to me in smaller relative numbers, drive to California.

There is a lot of Ontario car traffic to Atlantic Canada every summer.

Vast numbers of children from southern Ontario go to camps in mid-north Ontario for two weeks or a month every summer, too.

Air charter flights to Great Britain and other parts of Europe are busy in the summer too.

And finally, many people stay home in the summer, and instead go somewhere warm in the winter. The big cities in Canada all have summer festivals, lots of entertainment, good restuarnts, lots of parks, etc., so staying home but getting outdoors into parks and sidewalk restaurants is not a bad thing.

Plus the "cottage country" mentioned above is still astouding in Toronto, Montreal, London, and other Ontario and Quebec cities, and less popular but still significant in much fo the rest of the country.
BAK

I am going to Montreal for an extra long weekend this summer. The big trip this year was to England and France in the spring.
|
The last couple of years, after travelling around quite a bit, I have stayed home, here in Southern Alberta. We mostly go to the Crowsnest Pass between Alberta and BC and enjoy the beauty.
|
Going to the cottage and the beach is really popular in Manitoba too. I'd never leave Canada between June-Sept. There's no point in suffering through winter every year and missing summer! I save my plane tickets for Nov-March.
|
This year we're staying in Canada, too -- driving from Toronto to Victoria via relatives in Edmonton. We've been meaning to do it for a long time, and this year it seemed like the perfect destination. We will duck into the US on the way back, just to vary the route, but as we are camping along the way, it's not too much of a financial stretch.
|
Susan,
I was off to Turkey end of Sept. until 9/11 made me cancel.Because I plan on going next September, what 2 week itinerary do you suggest that includes islands?
|
Hey, Summergirl! That's too funny....beaches in Manitoba!
|
Hey Mike
Not funny. My happiest memories are of being at the LAKE on the beach all summer every summer for 10 years as a kid in Manitoba. Course now after a vacation to Vanc Island about 20 years ago I now live at the beach.
This summer will visit 14 provinces and states BC--> Manitoba down to Grand Canyon over to Cal Coast up to Oregon and Washington Coast then back home to the big beach.
Cheers,
JAn

One of the nicest beaches I've ever seen was in Manitoba.

Boy, do I feel stupid today. Thanks guys for the geography lesson. I apologize & next time I will look @ a map b/f I fire off a reply. I am somewhat embarrassed w/ my lack of knowledge of Manitoba. I thought Manitoba was all prairie. Sorry.
|
Jan,
Oh no, now I have to show my ignorance. I think it was on Lake Winnipeg? The one with the gorgeous, clean white sand and the shallow water that you could walk out in for what seemed like miles.
