nude beaches
Are there any good nude beaches in the Cairns/Port Douglas area?
|
Well John we leave all our beaches nude, we found that trying to cover them up was far to expensive!
|
John,
I'm sure there are other forums you can go to that can satisfy your urges, this is a respectable travel forum so please in future contain yourself in this arena.
|
I was just going to stand back and watch until your last comment.

There is nothing unrespecatable about a nude beach. Austalia, along with an number of other countries have legal nude beaches. Anyone who has done any degree of international travelling realizes that it is mostly the Aericans that are prudish.

The beaches are nude...they are not lewd or lascivious. I have met politicians, lawyers, doctors, college professors and ministers on these beaches.

Many people who use this message board, go nude on beaches. Conde Naste Traveller, along with other magazines, recognize that when write about nude beach availability.

To quote Rodney King, "Can't we all just get along"....there are plenty of beaches out there for us to be able to share.
|
Hi Dick!!!!
You have to go back to OZ!

I thought all the beaches were nude if you want to !
|
It`s obvious that they haven`t gone to a nude beach, my husband and I are very respectful people and had our first experince at a nude beach(Little Beach in Maui) and it was wonderful and the people were too. Good luck I hope you find one
|
For clarity you will notice that Johns response to my original post (my attempt at humour!) has been removed by Fodors - my second post referred to Johns obscene reply and was not a reference to nude beaches (to each their own I say). The response from John was the issue not the beach,
Rgds
Michael
ps: far to chilly down here at the moment to even think of taking your clothes off anyway :-)
|
I am from Perth and there is a nude beach over there called Swanbourne, the area is somewhat remote with limited access, some distance between two more popular beachs. The area is safe, there are no perverts, molesters, etc. It is just an accepted thing, no one makes a big deal of it. Australians are not shy to bare some skin. On most beachs of Perth you will see some women topless, even on the most popular beachs such as Scarboro and Cott. Away from popular spots, there are always semi nude suntanners. No one makes a big deal, it is just common practise. Go to Europe, just about every one is naked there! It is not for every one, myself included, but each to his own.
|
It my experience, nude beaches are friendlier, cleaner and have a greater percentage of college educated individuals than clothed beaches.

|
Have a greater percentage of college educated individuals??????????What's the point?
|
Karyn..

The point is that nude beaches seem to attract greater numbers of educated, sophisticated travellers than clothed beaches.
The poster earlier seem to imply that there was something wrong with individuals seeking nude beach info.
|
dick, i agree with you but i think the poster later said that he was actually being judgemental of Johns interest in seeking a nude beach.
On a related topic, I have just realised (as I prepare my next trip to NZ) that I have never seen the australian attitudes to swim suits (or the lack of them) in NZ. is there a law against topless or nude bathing in NZ? |
No, no, no - the box jelly fish would probably get you - for safe dipping on beaches for the next six months or so you need a head to toe lycra stinger suit - beaches are too hot here just to lie in the sun. For sometime nude resort try the White Cockatoo at Mossman.
|
Crickey Mate! I must have been missing something as I have wandered my way around Australian beaches over all these years. I had never thought to do a survey as to whether a person with big nude ....... was a University Student or not and come to think of it no-one has ever asked me, but the no-one has ever asked me how old I am when I buy alcohol either. Perhaps its only those people on those type of beaches who regard the relevence of taking your clothes off as important. But the very fact that the majority of people i.e. about 99.9% do wear swimmers would seem to me to mean therefore that the majority of University graduates wore clothing when at the beaches. I am far more interested in whether a guy has a hairy bum or not actually. On that subject I have noticed that there are more hairy bums on the beaches in Victoria than in say Queensland to which I must conclude that in Queensland there is a higher rate of sales of hair remover.
|
Ok, Now that we have all proved how childish we can be with silly posts about hairy bums etc can someone please answer John's original question?
I have heard about Buchan Point and Trinity Beach but they are NOT legal. Can anyone confirm these? |
Marsketa - still illegal in Queensland, I'm afraid although they keep talking about changing the legislation. It's usually tolerated at Buchan Point unless some high minded resident stands on tippy toe to see them through their apartment window and calls the police. This happened only a couple of years ago when two German tourists were arrested. Wouldn't try it at Trinity - it considers itself a "family" beach. White Cockatoo motel at Mossman caters for nudists at certain times of year.
|
In my experience, the more relaxed the locals are, the more likely you are to find Clothing Optional beaches - therefore, if you are in the Cairns area, head for Cape Trib where there is a more accepting and easy going attitude. Many of the offshore islands also advertise "nudey" or "secluded" and "private" beaches in their brochures, which is another fair indication.
I understand their is also a "nude cruise" planned to travel from Sydney to Cairns early in 2005? Does anyone know anymore about this? |
There are many Queensland beaches which are so isolated and un-populated, and with no police presence that no-one would notice if one was nude or what. The question was about legality and as far as I'm aware it is still illegal in Queensland. Topless is OK, said the Mayor of Cairns, when there were complaints about European backpackers' boob exposure around the newish swimming lagoon right in the middle of the city. There were folks who didn't like their children to be exposed to such sights. There's a few B&B's in the area with relaxed attitudes about dress or lack of it - usually promoted on "naturists" sites.
|
I hear that Tony from the "White Cockatoo" is promoting another beach near his resort as a likely nude beach. Does anybody know the name of that beach? Tony would know about the Nude Cruise next year, too.
|
It occurs to me that here in QLD, we are missing out on a lot of potential tourist trade from this untapped specialist tourist market of nudists because we are the ONLY state NOT to have legal nude beaches in Australia. The tourists will go to other states or indeed to New Zealand (where there are not the same out of date rules) instead of coming here. Cairns beaches may have stingers and be too hot in Summer but what about in winter. Cairns and indeed anywhere in QLD would be an ideal holiday destination for people who live in our southern states to come to in winter. So why don't we have nude beaches?
|
Wow, a thread from 1999!! That was even before the Olympics which seems an age ago.
Marsketa, The nude beaches we have in NSW are always out of the way so I don't know it is so tourist friendly. The few I have been to (and btw I was not nude lol) were essentially gay beaches anyway, not really what is advertised. So basically what I am saying is that nude beaches are so out of the way they can be nude beaches whether legal or not, because no-one else goes and if they do and complain they would take hours to get the police. So we have hundreds of miles of deserted beaches, find a spot and get back to nature. (but please put sunscreen on those sensitive spots, our sun is harsher than you would ever imagine) |
Marsketa,
For anyone lucky enough to be holidaying at Noosa Heads, the spectacular Alexandria Bay is reached by a pleasant walk through Noosa National Park. Although not actually legal, it is accepted, with the local tourist office happy to provide visitors with directions. It is a glorious beach, although dangerous due to rips and lack of life-guards - and attracts quite a crowd during busy holiday times. |
Marsketa - could be Wonga Beach, but am not sure. Notice Tony also organises nude reef trips from Port Douglas. This nude beach thing was a subject of lively debate recently in local paper - some of the letters to the editor were hilarious. Perhaps this horror of bare flesh is still a hangover from wowser Bjelke-Petersen days!
|
Someone sent me a copy of one of the letters to the paper about the nude cruise. The author said that nudity was usually associated with war!!!???? How Bizarre!I have never seen an army go to battle in the nude!
Will the tourists from the nude cruise be able to go nude on the beaches in Cairns? |
Jane 47,
What about the other Olympics? Samarai Beach near Newcastle NSW gets about 200 people to it's nude Olympics Day. So obviously this is good for the accommodation venues in the Nelson Bay area. Does Cairns hold a nude Olympics on any of it's beaches? |
That should have read 2000 nudists at the Samarai Beach Olympics. Surely those numbers of naturists must be good for the tourist industry!
Anita |
The Samuria beach festival has been cancelled this year due to problems with insurance but they say that it will be back bigger and better in 2005.
The resort that used to be at the One Mile called Bardot's has closed down as a nudist resort, it was bought by the local shire council to be refurbished and expanded as a normal holiday resort. My sister used to work at Bardot's. Cheers Paul_S |
Marsketa - so far no, Cairns doesn't hold a nude Olympics on it's beaches. As mentioned before, it's still officially illegal in Qld, although tolerated in lots of the more isolated areas. Am sure whoever is organising the nude cruise will be able to find a suitable beach where they're unlikely to be arrested.
|
There is a Nude Beach Olympics held at Alexandria bay, Noosa each year and that beach isn't legal. Are there going to be any nude activities organised in the Cairns region for the cruise people? What about nude skydiving? What about nude bungie? What about nude (except lifejacket) white water rafting? What about a nude dive or nude snorkling on the reef? Is the Cairns tourist industry doing anything to meet the needs of the tourists on board the cruise so that it becomes a yearly event? I know Tony from White Cockatoo will probably organise a nude sail to the reef and a nude trip to the Daintree. Is he the only one smart enough to capitalise on this lucrative tourist market?
|
Such a shame that Queensland has the best weather and the best beaches, but is the only mainland State not to have a legal nude beach.
A trip during the Southern summer to any of the other mainland Capital cities would place travellers in close proximity to some great legal nude beaches - when will the Queensland travel industry realise that there is serious money to be made from this sector, and convince their government that it is worthwhile pursuing? |
Just curious as to know which are the great nude legal beaches in NSW - I've seen a few over the years but would hardly describe them as great?
|
Pat,
Tyagarah Beach (also known by some as Nth Belongil Beach) in Northern NSW is a nice legal nude beach. It has a carpark, tiolet and is only a short walk over a sand dune. I also think Birdie beach is quite nice. Again there is a carpark. toilet and easy access via a short walk. There is surf and a fresh water lake. Samarai is another beatiful legal nude beach but unless you have a 4WD access is a little harder. There are 8 legal nude beaches in NSW and only 3 are in Sydney Harbour. Anita |
I saw an add the other day offering nude senic flights over Sydney. What a great idea for the nude cruise people! Creative Cairns tour opporators could make a killing offering the nude cruise tourists all sorts of interesting thing to do and see nude. There could be nude flights over the reef and nude balloon flights over Cairns. By offering things these nudist tourists can do nude that mainstream tourists enjoy you could corner a lucrative market. It is also good for publicity! Cairns Tour companies offering the unusual to meet the actual needs of their cliant instead of expecting everyone to conform to enjoying the activities in a way they think are suitable.....
It makes us apear more friendly, more compliant and more flexable and yes a lot more fun too! |
Now this begs the question, how do they get onboard the plane? I could see a few airport accidents with a bunch of people walking across the tarmac with no clothes on.
I guess they would pass through the security check pretty quickly. :o) |
Yes anita, the possibilities are certainly endless. 8 legal nude beaches in the whole of NSW doesn't sound a lot from the state with the largest population, but it certainly leaves Qld for dead. I remember a Sydney legal nude harbour beach near Dobroyd Point - the residents were horrified about it attracting "undesirables" and de-valuing their real estate and were busily trying to get it "de-nuded". The chief nudist petitioner was marching up and down the beach clad in a large sunhat, T-shirt and sandals - he was wearing more clothing than you'd see on a normal Sydney beach on a sunny day. Looked sort of ridiculous.
|
Paul,
No concealed weapons to check anyway! LOL Anyway, I would expect that these tours would be run from small private plane charter companies who have their own hangers at the airport. And if not then the nude cruise tourists could wear minimum clothing to the plane. I've also seen private plane operators landing and taking off from nude beaches but then there are no legal nude beaches in QLD are there! |
Pat,
Was that Reef Beach and Rex Mossop? Yes 8 beaches seems hardly enough for NSW but then Victoria only has 2 and one is just mud flats. South Australia has two legal beaches. Western Australia has 1 or maybe 2? Tasmania has a legal nude beach too although the name (Asbestos Beach) doesn't make it sound inviting! Canberra has one and the Northern Territory has 1. AND QUEENSLAND HAS ZERO!!! Nexty year we will be 30 years behind (the first legal nude beach was at Maslin's in South Australia in 1975 ) |
Canberra has one ? I thought Canberra was well inland. Can Neil Cammack relate his experiences on the Canberra nude beach, please?
A/D |
Hi Anita, Yes, I think it was Reef Beach - not too far from harbourside Manly beach. It definitely wasn't Rex Mossop, this guy was sort of scrawny and well-spoken. Doesn't surprise me that Adelaide had the first nudist beach, that would have been in the days of the very liberal Labour premier, Don Dunstan - don't forget Qld had Joh at the time. Says it all. Think I'll give Asbestos Beach a miss, and yes, where on earth is there a beach at Canberra??
|
For the benefit of non-Aussies and those too young to remember, Don Dunstan, the South Australian premier, shocked the Adelaide establishment by wearing pink shorts in Parliament.
