ALF - you said it, we didn't!

Bokhara Oct 11th, 2005 11:59 PM

ALF ... I know I'm going to be sorry I asked (LOL)...... but what's "Seppos" ?

Bokhara Oct 12th, 2005 12:02 AM

Oh No! I think I just worked it out !
Does it have something to do with waste storage & disposal units ?

pat_woolford Oct 12th, 2005 02:25 AM

You've got it Bokhara, but must admit haven't heard it for years. Fortunately.

Geckolips Oct 12th, 2005 11:48 AM

What is zorbing?

ALF Oct 12th, 2005 01:38 PM

Pat,
I think you must just travel in more polite circles than I do.

lizF Oct 12th, 2005 02:51 PM

Of course Pat does, she is very straight laced and polite and would never dream of saying things like that. For that matter so must I because I have no idea what you have been talking about.

ElendilPickle Oct 12th, 2005 03:09 PM

Well, this Yank isn't afraid to admit she doesn't get it - what is a Seppo?

Geckolips, zorbing involves rolling down a hill in a big inflated ball. Go to www.zorb.co.nz for details. :-)

Lee Ann,
According to my "Aussie Lingo Dictionary" sent to me by my Sydneysider friend,
"Seppo" is and abbreviated form of the Aussie rhyming slang "Septic Tank Yank".
Americans (Yankees) are therefore referred to as seppos.
I am not sure if I made that clear...

ElendilPickle Oct 12th, 2005 08:15 PM

LOL - that's clear enough, Liz! Thanks for the explanation.

I never would have said that Ms Dill.

Neil_Oz Oct 13th, 2005 12:52 AM

...and like most of the stuff in purported guides to Australian slang, not much used any more. An old mate of mine uses it - but he lives in the country, don't get around much any more (if he ever did) and to prove it, calls women "sheilas".

lizF Oct 13th, 2005 05:05 AM

Struth Neil it looks like I will be puking with you!

ElendilPickle Oct 13th, 2005 11:27 AM

>>I never would have said that Ms Dill.<<

It was the other Liz, Liz. :-D

Worked for a US based but Australian staffed pretty big company in Sydney for 17 years and am afraid I heard the expression a lot from fairly well educated, middle to senior male Australian management. Never from women or factory/warehouse staff of either sex and never in Queensland. Which is probably why LizF has never encountered it.
