Tokyo GTG in October

We will be in Japan for the month of October.

Mr & Mrs Kuranosuke will also be in Tokyo on October 2 so we are having our second Tokyo GTG. This year we are planning to be at:

Gonpachi Restaurant
Address: 1-13-11 Nishi Azabu
Location: Roppongi & Nishi Azabu
Transportation Station: Roppongi (10 min.). From Roppongi Crossing, walk toward Shibuya on Roppongi Dori. It will be on your right, at Gaien-Nishi Dori
Phone 03/5771-0170

We plan to meet there at 6:00 pm for cocktails and dinner. If any Japan Fodorites or any Fodorites for that matter are in the area and want to attend please let us know by indicating so on this thread.

Aloha!

rhkkmk Aug 23rd, 2009 05:45 PM

i'm in...save 3 seats...

Kathie Aug 23rd, 2009 05:51 PM

HT, I just had to show Cheryl the menu. She wanted to go out for sushi... in Tokyo!

kuranosuke Aug 23rd, 2009 11:32 PM

we are looking forward to another tokyo gtg. i've been to gonpachi several times. the food is very good, and reasonable, considering you're in roppongi. its at the nishi-azabu crossing. very easy to get to.

so far, 7. we can sit on the floor with the puka in the floor, or at a table.

the last time i was there, we had a time limit of 2.5hr. they are very popular, so we need to vacate in time for the next set of reservations. perhaps its just as well, as we don't want to over do it, as ht has an early wake up call the next day to start his month long journey in japan. (some guys have all the luck.)lol

hope some of the local fodorites can join us. kappa-san, any chance you might be in japan in early oct? bill-san?

Hanuman Aug 24th, 2009 12:00 AM

I'm joining Bob so make that 4 seats for Bob's party.

DonTopaz Aug 24th, 2009 04:22 AM

I am jealous

kuranosuke Aug 24th, 2009 07:28 AM

great pook. maybe you can be gpandas proxy, and help us keep track of bob. lol.

too bad don, maybe next time.

hawaiiantraveler Aug 24th, 2009 09:28 AM

Kathie,

Well looks like you have to make a Tokyo GTG sometime soon then ;)

Luckily one of the HNL gtg venues will have to satisfy Cheryl until then

Aloha!

lcuy Aug 27th, 2009 02:55 PM

Ken or peter - If you've got a moment today, can one of you call me?

I just found a fabulous ticket on CO that includes Tokyo, Boston and Las Vegas for $1500. I have it on hold till tomorrow, but wanted a few details from you before I commit, and before i purchase a ticket (NRT only) for husband. Call my office to get cell # If you don't have it already. (Last name & Associates)

hawaiiantraveler Aug 27th, 2009 04:46 PM

Calling lcuy...

kuranosuke Aug 28th, 2009 08:30 AM

thanks ht. i lost my cell, along with all my important numbers. can't call anyone. lol.

lucy, wow! what a deal, asia, beantown, and lv for $1500.

lcuy Aug 28th, 2009 09:41 AM

Thanks Ken...spoke with HT, and will likely be having sushi in Tokyo with you! He also gave me a bunch of travel ideas, so I'm working on itinerary & M's ticket right now.

kuranosuke Aug 28th, 2009 04:22 PM

wow! lucy, thats great! looking forward to breaking toro with you and m.

SiobhanP Sep 11th, 2009 06:39 AM

I will be there a month later and I am sorry to miss this. I had a great time last trip with my colleagues in Tokyo. Have fun!

hawaiiantraveler Sep 11th, 2009 08:35 AM

Thanks Siobhan, maybe next year.

Aloha!

hawaiiantraveler Sep 22nd, 2009 07:29 AM

ttt

emd3 Sep 22nd, 2009 09:20 AM

Isn't mrwunrfl coming? He should be checking the airfares about now, doing his little magic on United or whatever airline he is now a million point man on!

How do people get to go for a month anyway...while the rest of us slave away and wait for our one or two wk vacations...

I'll have to settle for sushi in NYC next wk and again in Oct. Some guys have all the luck.

hawaiiantraveler Sep 22nd, 2009 04:51 PM

Hi emd,

When are you going back to Japan? I do hope Bill can make it....you know these 1Ker's....they have so many SWU's and free flights its falling out of their pockets :).

Nice to hear from you again!

Aloha!

kuranosuke Sep 22nd, 2009 10:17 PM

well, so far, we are 6 @ 6 @ gonpachi for next friday. i think we have a two hour limit. if thats not enough time, we can always catch a one for the road at someplace in roppongi.

all welcomed. just post here so i can adjust the res. domo.

btw, ht, i don't think emd3=emd(eileen). maybe i'm wrong. would love to see bill there.

hawaiiantraveler Sep 22nd, 2009 10:24 PM

Yes emd3 is emd.......long story

kuranosuke Sep 23rd, 2009 06:55 AM

hi emd3. sushi in ny sounds good too.

emd3 Sep 23rd, 2009 08:52 AM

Hi Ken. Yep, emd3 is me. Fodors keeps making me re-register...1,2,3 times so I just keep duplicating myself! That is a scary thought, more than one of me bouncing around the globe.

Whereforartthou mywunrfl...maybe he is off on some globe trekking right now.

rhkkmk Sep 23rd, 2009 06:18 PM

i've sent bill an e mail

mrwunrfl Sep 24th, 2009 11:12 PM

I wish I could make it, it would be great to see you all, but I can't go. Same reason that I couldn't make it to the HNL GTG - too much work and a planned trip to Buenos Aires at the end of October.

Can't make it to the Boston GTG because rhk keeps planning it right in the middle of baseball playoffs. Maybe my O:)AngelsO:) will be able to get past the Red Sox this year. If we make it to the World Series I would have to cancel the trip!

Maybe Japan/Thailand in November, or India in March.

Heading to New Haven on Saturday!

Good to see more of emd back on fodors. I still have to read your MP tr, but I don't really need to be tempted by another place I'd want to go to right now.

emd3 Sep 25th, 2009 07:44 AM

hey back atcha, mrw. I am spending lots of time in NYC, trying to get some clients and work. Son is at Boston Univ. now and that is where my $$s are going. I do have a quick 4 day trip to Oaxaca planned for Day of the Dead but nada mas.

Have fun in Buenos Aires, say hi to Scarlett if you see her. and btw, the Red Sox are going to get the wild card, right?

kuranosuke Sep 25th, 2009 08:01 AM

hi emd3, i was wondering what your son was doing. happy to see him st bu. go eagles.

mrw, hope to see you in bangkok in nov.

ht, whats the weather going to be like in tokyo for the gtg?

emd3 Sep 25th, 2009 10:04 AM

Thanks for the congrats, but oops Ken- Eagles is BOSTON COLLEGE. As in Boston College, where he did not get accepted. He is at Boston University, closer to downtown Boston than BC is. No football at BU, just hockey (the Terriers, #1 last yr). He is working in Boston also part time, to pay for part of his tuition.

hawaiiantraveler Sep 25th, 2009 10:11 AM

ken, ogenki desuka? rain in the upper 60's but we won't feel it inside with all the japanese and hawaiian warmth(sake) throughout the restaurant. ja mata

hawaiiantraveler Sep 25th, 2009 10:13 AM

mrw, I think this is the Angels year! See you around sometime soon!

Aloha!

lcuy Sep 25th, 2009 04:16 PM

Now that he is at BU, is he glad he didn't get into BC? That's what happened with my daughter! Too far out of town to do anyything at night, girls too into fashion, too many jocks, etc, etc. Who knows? Anyway, she's glad she went there and she graduated last spring!

Hope he is doing well!

rhkkmk Sep 25th, 2009 06:26 PM

gpanda went to BU law... he skipped high school and went there directly from the 6th grade

mrwunrfl Sep 25th, 2009 09:33 PM

Congrats, e, and thanks for the Casey update. Yes the Sox will almost certainly be the wild card, unfortunately.

emd3 Sep 26th, 2009 04:29 AM

lcuy, I can't believe she has graduated! I remember when she was just starting there (I think you did a post on your Boston college trip that I saw way back when, and have gone back to many times since then). Yes, he is happy at BU, seems to like it so far. He lucked out with a 16th fl. rm in Warren Towers A, facing downtown (unobstructed 180 degree view of downtown Boston). I use the pic as my screen saver!

Have a great GTG in Tokyo everyone! Eat some toro for the rest of us.

kappa1 Sep 26th, 2009 08:03 AM

Hello Ooishi-san, taihen arigato for mentionning me. I missed this thread until now. Anyway unfortunately, I won't be in Japan in that periode. Enjoy to those who will be there. BTW 03OCT is my birthday so you could do "kanpai" wishing me " tanjobi omedeto"!

kuranosuke Sep 26th, 2009 02:57 PM

ht, boku wa genki desu. anata? domo for the weather report. will bring a light jacket.

emd, boo to the eagles. beat the eagles! i will have alot of toro.

kappa-san, perhaps next time. we will do a kampai to you.

hawaiiantraveler Sep 27th, 2009 07:59 AM

genki desu kuranosuke......see you Friday at 6. Looked at the menu. Guess what I am ordering, lol.

kappasan Otanjou-bi Omedetou Gozaimasu!

Aloha!

emd3 Sep 27th, 2009 08:08 AM

Kappa, what a pleasure to see you here! Some japan folks have been around quite a few yrs on this board, which is great. I just wish Florence was still around, i miss her posts.

I bet Mara is reading this post and wishing she was going to be there too. It is raining where she lives today ( I know because I am across the river from her today) and rainy Sundays are the best travel fantasy days...

hawaii, you and ms. hawaii have a great month and keep notes for the trip report!

kappa1 Sep 27th, 2009 12:45 PM

emd, thanks (blush), I come here less often since the new format has been introduced but I do stop by occasionally. Oh, Florence, I hope she is fine and still doing kendo (I think it was kendo she was practicing).

lcuy Sep 27th, 2009 12:46 PM

I miss Florence too!

and we spent 3 nights on the 16th floor of Warren last May during the graduation. C1602 & 1603, IIRC. It was fun to play student and our DD got a kick out of us complaining about the elevators and bathroom, just as she did her freshman year.

The food in that cafeteria is good, too, so expect your son to put on a few pounds! Best wishes to him to have as good an experience as my daughter did.
