Tokyo Fall GTG 2013

A few Fodorites will be in Japan at the same time this fall and as all good Fodorites do we are planning a GTG in Tokyo. The date will be October 26, 2013 at 7:00 in the evening at:

Gonpachi Restaurant Nishi-Azabu
1-13-11 Nishi-Azabu, Minato-ku, Tokyo Japan
Ph# - 03-5771-0170

Reservation is under my name Peter Gomes. Restaurant website and menu are here:

http://www.gonpachi.jp/nishiazabu/?lang=en

Please let us know here if you are interested in attending. So far we have:

Mr & Mrs HT(Linda & Peter) = 2
karen and bob (rhkkmk)(kmkrnn)---2
Craig and Jeane (2)

We will have a two hour time limit(last time we stretched it to around 3 hrs) which might be a good thing for those who travel the next day. All are welcome, please come join us.

Aloha!

Kathie Mar 11th, 2013 04:20 PM

Alas! We won't yet be in Japan. You guys get the GTG, we will see the koyo.

hawaiiantraveler Mar 11th, 2013 06:00 PM

Kathie, we will miss you two very much. Too bad our times didn't cross but I am sure it will another time in the near future.

We just may see some koyo in the fall if we choose to go that route. This year koyo season will be at least a week ahead of the last two seasons according to the ht calculations so there are a few venues for us to enjoy while we are there. Nikko, near our Tokyo time and maybe the early turners near Northern Kyoto. Definitely Fujigoko should be going off then and maybe even Takao if temple viewing is tolerable to others. The more important factor will be the limited days and with the so much to see senario.........

Have you seen this place yet?

Aloha!

Kathie Mar 11th, 2013 06:52 PM

Wow! looks wonderful.

I've been slowly reading and digesting the Gateway to Japan book. By now, I thought I'd have all kinds of questions about specific temples or gardens, but I'm not even close yet!

Aloha! We are enjoying our three weeks on Kauai.

rhkkmk Mar 11th, 2013 07:22 PM

i promise to break a bigger door than ken did, and i'm going to blame craig...

Craig Mar 12th, 2013 05:42 AM

Trust me - they'll know who did it...

shelleyk Mar 12th, 2013 05:43 AM

Unfortunately, your GTG is 10 days before we arrive. I know you'll have a great time together. I'll look for your postings about who broke what.

hawaiiantraveler Mar 12th, 2013 06:47 AM

Bakatare desu
<i>Bah kah tah day des</i>

Learn these words Bob then they will know who did it though I think Craig is right....they'll know.

Aloha!

rhkkmk Mar 12th, 2013 12:47 PM

i'd rather point...

Cilla_Tey Mar 12th, 2013 04:57 PM

Alas, will most likely be in Japan about 2 weeks before the GTG.

Kavey Mar 18th, 2013 12:43 PM

Looks like I may be in Japan at the right time...
Is there an email address I can contact, as I'd rather not discuss dates away from home online.
Would love to attend a Fodorite GTG again... used to go to a fair few in early noughties but not for a while.
x

hawaiiantraveler Apr 11th, 2013 06:45 AM

TTT for kuranosuke

kuranosuke Apr 11th, 2013 09:27 AM

domo, ht-san.

may i correct the nasty rumors that seem to be circulating about my vandalism at a certain izakaya in tokyo.

i deny everything, and it wasn't at gonpachi.

btw, since you'll be in the area, why not stop by the don quiote store in roppongi. amazing array of thousands of itmes.

DonTopaz Apr 11th, 2013 10:06 AM

More info on the don quiote (quixote?) store, kudasai? I'll be staying in Roppongi for a few days, but know nothing about this shop.

kuranosuke Apr 11th, 2013 11:51 AM

don, don q is not far from the roppongi stop on the hibiya line.

http://www.donki.com/search/shop_det...st_store_id=31

its a multi level department store with thousands of items. fun to visit.

since you will be in the area, and you enjoy sushi, go across the street to the lane next to the hard rock cafe, and have a nice sushi dinner at fukuzushi. excellent, and good price/value.

http://www.roppongifukuzushi.com/e_f...fukuzushi.html

also, go to roppongi hills, and have lunch at l'atelier. the set lunch is delicious, and very good value.

http://www.roppongihills.com/shops_r...204550001.html

and, if you like fresh soba, go to kurosawa, just up the street from the main entrance to the hyatt roppongi hills.

hawaiiantraveler Apr 11th, 2013 02:05 PM

great recos ken. are you guys going to be in japan in oct?

Aloha!

kuranosuke Apr 11th, 2013 02:55 PM

i may be, but someone has to work. lol.

rhkkmk Apr 11th, 2013 03:33 PM

the door is waiting---maybe up the game to a plate glass window

Kavey Apr 11th, 2013 10:38 PM

I think we shall not be in Tokyo for the right date, but if anyone else is Kyoto region on those dates, give me a shout. x

lcuy Apr 11th, 2013 10:59 PM

Don, the store is nicknamed "Donki" just like the animal but with a long "o". Lots of stuff, don't go while jetlagged, as it can sometimes be overwhelming!

So Tokyo is October 26? For some reason, I had it as Nov 26, and that did not work for us. Hmmmm.

kuranosuke Apr 11th, 2013 11:23 PM

so what tita? you going?? the return of the gang of roku.

lcuy Apr 12th, 2013 01:13 AM

Hey, who you calling tita? You know that's music to haole ears, right? :-)

I would really like to go, and I know Mr lcuy would be up for it...Just have got to figure out how I can spend time in Tokyo, the Boston Gtg and my big HS reunion in early Oct. Çhoices.

kuranosuke Apr 12th, 2013 01:33 AM

just do it like the last time, when you went back and forth, and forth and back for a mere pittance, and got 30k miles in the process. such a deal.

honestly, if you find a deal like that again, pls let me know.i'll buy you and m a diet coke at the airport.

Florida1 Apr 17th, 2013 03:05 PM

Hello,

We have tickets on hold arriving in Tokyo on Oct. 25 and want to be sure we wouldn't miss any planned or informal activities by arriving on Friday - our dates could be flexible. We would plan on attending the GTG on Saturday at the Gonpachi restaurant.

Look forward to seeing anyone attending the Boston GTG as well!

Thanks!

hawaiiantraveler Apr 17th, 2013 03:26 PM

That's great Florida. We will count you as two for Sat nite at Gonpachi. Nothing else is planned before hand but you can all talk about doing something while at the Boston GTG. So far we have eight attending

Mr & Mrs HT(Linda & Peter) = 2
karen and bob (rhkkmk)(kmkrnn)---2
Craig and Jeane (2
Florida1 + guest = 2

Anyone else???? Still lots of time kuranosuke

Aloha!

Craig Jun 2nd, 2013 09:39 AM

Just looking at my Tokyo map. This is not near Citadines Shinjuku. Is taxi the best way to get there? Or is there an efficient way via subway that I can't see?

hawaiiantraveler Jun 2nd, 2013 10:56 AM

Craig,

Get there by subway from Citadines. If you don't have one of these download and print out for future reference.

http://www.tokyometro.jp/en/subwayma...outemap_en.pdf

A 5 minute walk away from Citadines is the M-10 Shinjuku Gyoenmae stop which you would enter and take train till the Kasumigaseki M-15 station(5 stops away) where you would transfer to the Hibiya line and get off at the Roppongi stop and exit there. The restaurant is a ten minute walk from Roppongi station. The whole subway process should take you about 31 minutes if you hit it correctly....a little longer if not.
You can leave with us from Citadines if you like or we can share taxis if in a rush.

You can plan your other Tokyo subway rides here:

Aloha!

Craig Jun 2nd, 2013 11:23 AM

Wow, that is a roundabout route via subway but it does get you there at reasonable cost. We would likely be back at the hotel at that time so it would be great if we could all go together. That will be our 3rd full day in Tokyo, so by then we will BW subway pros...

Thanks for the links.

hawaiiantraveler Jun 2nd, 2013 11:28 AM

Sorry for the link duplication

Plan your subway routes here

rhkkmk Jun 3rd, 2013 06:39 AM

hawaiiantraveler Jun 3rd, 2013 06:58 AM

Yes lcuy do them both....you know us portagees don't know the meaning of vice-versa ;)

rhk, Ok,I will pay for all the taxis in Tokyo......yah right, forget about it. btw, I hope you are studying that subway map I left for Craig above.....that's not rain, that's me peeing from the balcony above, lol. I am really going to enjoy Japan this fall!

Aloha!

Craig Jun 3rd, 2013 11:05 AM

Peter, that subway planner is awesome!

hawaiiantraveler Jun 3rd, 2013 05:29 PM

Yup Craig pretty cool and real easy to use.

Now just wait till you get lost in Shinjuku or Tokyo stations....I know most newbies try to stay clear of these two but they always just want a peek then snnnnnaaaaaaaaaappp.....gotcha ;)

Aloha!
