Thailand Travelogue

Hi, I'd just like to share with you my vacation to Thailand, last Xmas.

Please feel free to bookmark the following link and read it at your leisure.

http://www.bangor.ac.uk/~fos007/fb2b.htm

Thank you for your time.

The story maybe slightly dull but hey, I've got some good photos!

Julie May 8th, 2001 04:42 AM

Cool photos, I'll read the story later!

sarah rey May 8th, 2001 05:57 AM

Colin, absolutely MAGNIFICENT !
I now live in Bangkok, and in a way I 'miss' the wonderous anticipation of flying into Bangkok. I was always sorry to have to go back to Sydney afterwards.
Truly wonderful reading. Do start savies your english 'pennys' for your next trip!

Colin Owen May 9th, 2001 12:09 AM

Thank you for your kind words.

They are much appreciated!

Eric C May 9th, 2001 07:41 AM

I haven't laughed out loud from reading something off the internet for quite sometime!

Your sharing your bowel misfortune is very brave of you!

pat May 9th, 2001 09:54 AM

Mr Colin (yes, the Thai way, did i answer your Q?)
I did enter your web page, but haven't yet finished your story. But I do enjoy reading it.
Have you noticed the word order of Thai compared to Welsh? If you do so, it appears to be the same way.
I didn't explore much in your city during my short visit to the Snowdon area, but I went many weekend-away trips to Cymru many times.

Colin Owen May 10th, 2001 01:42 AM

Hi Pat,

no I hadn't realised that the Thai language is similar to the Welsh when is comes to the structure of sentences. How interesting !

In English we'd say "Black Swan" but in Welsh and Thai we would say "Swan Black"

You seem very knowledgable of Wales. You even know that in the Welsh language we call it Cymru. I thank you on behalf of Wales for your interest.

We're you in the UK for some time ? We're you a student perhaps ? Did you go climbing or walking in the mountains of Snowdonia ?

Anyway, thank you for your reply. It is much appreciated to here that you are enjoying my travel story !
Alan May 11th, 2001 07:09 AM

I am reading your travel journal a day at a time, it is hilarious!!

doc May 11th, 2001 10:59 AM

I spent most of this morning reading your very informative and entertaining journal covering your trip to Thailand. We were there almost a month after you were. I wish I'd had the opportunity to read your journal (and see your pictures) before we left. Unlike your trip, ours was with a group. We spent a week in Bangkok and two weeks in Chiang Mai. Side trips took us to Chiang Rai and the Golden Triangle area. If you'd be interested in my reactions to another kind of tour of Thailand I'd be happy to send a copy of my journal. Please contact me directly at my e-mail address since I've found that requests via a thread such as this are not always effective. Happy travels!

Colin Owen May 14th, 2001 12:57 AM

Thanks Doc!
I'm glad you enjoyed reading the journal.

I would really like to read your journal. I find reading other peoples thoughts on a trip is the best way of getting a better understanding of a destination.

Ariel May 15th, 2001 05:43 AM

Greetings,

I really enjoyed reading your travelogue. Thanks for sharing it.

A

Colin Owen May 18th, 2001 12:08 AM

Thank you, Ariel.

Austine May 21st, 2001 10:15 AM
Dear Colin. I attempted to pull up your travelogue on my Web TV but unfortunately was unable to do so. Is there any way you could send me your travelogue at my E-mail address listed above? It sounds very funny and I would love to have an opportunity to read it. Thank you, Austine.

Colin Owen May 23rd, 2001 04:50 AM

Yes of course Austine, I'll send you a copy via e-mail.

I must warn you though that it is over 40,000 words long, so I'll have to send you the journal a day at a time !

You'll also unfortunately miss out on the photographs. Nevermind.

callalily May 23rd, 2001 03:04 PM

Colin,

Great trip report. I really want to go to Thailand now!

How did you plan your trip? Did you research and book everything independently or did you use a travel agent? Also, what's the name of the hotel in Chiang Rai, look fabulous!

How are prices in Thailand?

Thanks in advance!

Lily

Colin Owen May 24th, 2001 12:56 AM

Hi Lily,

I'm glad you enjoyed reading my travelogue. Thailand is such a wonderful place and if you have not been before it simply has to be your next vacation. It is an experience beyond dreams.

I planned my trip by firstly researching on the internet all that I could gather about Thailand, then deciding on my itenerary. I then went through a travel agent, (Kuoni), who could accomodate most of where I wanted to go. They have a flexible approach to their 'packaged' holidays, by allowing the customer to unpackage the tours and chose their own course. I had to drop Sukkothai and Ko Lanta from my ideal tour, but at least we have a reason to go back.

The hotel in Chiang Rai is the Le Meridien, Baan Boran and is highly recommended! Read more about it from the link below.
http://www.lemeridien.co.th/baanboran/

The prices within the hotels are definetly on a par as to what you would pay internationally, but if you venture out to the real world then you'll find that everything is very cheap.

GO NOW, AND BOOK YOUR TRIP TO THAILAND !!!!

Simon May 31st, 2001 07:44 AM

Hey, cool trip report !

I found reading it very interesting. Seems like you had a great time!

I'm going to Thailand for the first time next Xmas, it gave me a good idea of where to go and what to see.

Thanks!

Colin Owen Jun 3rd, 2001 01:59 PM

Colin,

I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed reading your online travel journal. You really managed to capture the whole sprit of a trip to Thailand, warts and all. It was quite amusing.
Judi Aug 10th, 2001 03:22 PM

Would love to read you information. Will be traveling to Thailand in Nov.
Thanks

fiona Aug 11th, 2001 01:04 PM

Brilliant travelogue Colin!!!

ruben Aug 12th, 2001 08:55 AM

Planning a trip to Bangkok in late September and early October. Will the rain be cause for concern?

Colin Owen Aug 13th, 2001 04:58 AM

I've not been to Thailand during late September early October, so I'm unable to comment on the weather.

I have read though, that October in Bangkok could potentially be the wettest month of the year, with the streets prone to flooding.

But I'm sure it would all add to the fun of being there!

Chris Aug 14th, 2001 06:54 AM

Nice one mate. Good luck to you. Will check more of it out later when things calm down at work

Colin Owen Aug 20th, 2001 01:04 AM

Thanks Chris,

I'm glad you enjoyed reading the journal !

Caroline Sep 5th, 2001 12:37 AM

Hi
Just finished reading your account of your travels around Thailand. Superb!

I'm going in a couple of months with some friends so you've given me a really good insight into what to expect.

Just one question - is the air pollution along Silom Road really as bad as it sounded (we are also staying at the Holiday Inn) & is Bangkok as a whole grim (air wise)?

Also, the indian restaurant you mention - is that the one actually within the hotel?

Many thanks
Caroline
Jonathon Sep 18th, 2001 06:20 AM

Excellent trip report !!!

I really had a laugh at your story.

Can't wait until I go to the Land of Smiles!

Jayne Oct 3rd, 2001 01:38 AM

Just thought I'd write and say how addicted I was to reading your travel log.
John and I plus 2 kids (10 & 8 ) are heading out to Thailand on the 12 th of December and coming back the 5th of Jan. I've been twice before ( 20 yrs and 13 yrs ago) and John once, so I can picture what your showing us. ( Perhaps a little too graphically at times - all that passing through the eye of a needle stuff ! ). I have had my lonely planet beside me as I read your account, we are travelling independently so I'm having to read up allot. I bet if you had not been quite so ill it would have been even better, the trouble is that's so typical of real life.

Can I just ask was the £200 bill your accommodation charge or your mini bar and food? Also would you just head straight out to the Islands next time? We are into the snorkelling in a big way, like you I'm not a fish but you soon forget when there's something worth looking at. Also thanks for the weather report as I was just expecting sun and you have reminded me about seeing beaches out there when its not that wonderful and then seeing how they change when the sun comes out.

So thanks once again for bothering to publish what you saw, after a lot of surfing the net it was nice to read something other than adverts etc

Regards Jayne

Colin Owen Oct 31st, 2001 03:15 AM
