Shanghai GTG -- Early November

Nutella and I (not together) will be in Shanghai the 1st weekend of November and would like to GTG (get together) with Fodorites. The way it works is we discuss date, time and location convenient for everyone, usually not lunchtime since the travelers would most likely have activities.

Except for 11/3 Saturday evening, I am flexible on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Nutella Sep 13th, 2007 02:37 PM

I'm flexible too - I'd say any time between Friday dinner and Monday brunch works for me. Oh, I'm fine with lunchtimes too, since I've decided I'm going to spend my weekend wandering around town rather than structured tourism. Looking forward to making plans :)

nagiffag Sep 14th, 2007 06:21 AM

I'd like to GTG as well. DH will probably join us. We both work so Monday is less favorable. You guys can choose the location as it doesn't matter to us.

Appreciate you taking the initiative to set this up, Shanghainese!

Shanghainese Sep 14th, 2007 11:25 AM

You're welcome, naggifag, and thank you and Nutella for responding so quickly, I'm getting excited. Will wait a week or so to allow more responses before making plans.

Katie_H Sep 14th, 2007 12:19 PM

As you do get more responses...let me know you're final count. I'd love to send some Fodor's stuff your way if you'd like. Thanks for setting this up Shanghainese!

Shanghainese Sep 14th, 2007 02:31 PM

Thanks very much for your thoughtfulness, Katie, I'll definitely let you know the final count for the GTG. Aren't you coming too or will I be the first to schlep Fodor's goodies to China?

Katie_H Sep 16th, 2007 04:58 PM

oooh.... I'd love to go; not sure that's in our budget. =) I'll send it on to you first then; I can also send it there too though. No worries either way.

Shanghainese Sep 18th, 2007 01:42 PM

Thanks, Katie, not a problem, I'll e-mail you and discuss further when we know more.

Are there China guidebook writers who live in Shanghai (Lisa M) and check this board?

Shanghainese Sep 21st, 2007 03:32 PM

Shanghainese Sep 25th, 2007 08:08 AM

Let's start discussing the date and time, does Friday evening work?

Nutella Sep 26th, 2007 08:22 AM

Friday is good for me!

nagiffag Sep 28th, 2007 07:55 AM

Friday is fine for me too.

kuranosuke Sep 28th, 2007 09:14 AM

looks like fun, chow fun, look fun. lol. any chicken feet on the menu?

Shanghainese Oct 3rd, 2007 03:13 PM

Sorry I was away for a few days in the Big Sur area.

Friday 11/2 in the evening it is.

naggifag -- why don't you pick the venue please since you know all the great local restuarants. Nutella and I will be staying in the french concession area, so somewhere in Puxi?

naumannsara (Sara) and Chinatourguide (Susan) are based in Shanghai, Sara was having difficulty finding this thread. Hope they see it and can join us.

naumannsara Oct 4th, 2007 05:33 AM

Finally found the thread. Unfortunately it looks like I'll be out of town that weekend (going to Tokyo) so won't be able to join you. Things change though, so I'll check back. If you change to Monday, I could be there...

Shanghainese Oct 4th, 2007 07:51 AM

Sara -- Glad you found the thread. Nutella leaves Monday afternoon and naggifag & DH work in Shanghai. If your plans change, please check back and join us.

Chinatourguide Oct 4th, 2007 07:01 PM

Shanghainese Oct 5th, 2007 09:50 AM

Susan -- Thank you for your offer to book a restaurant for the GTG and prepare an activity proposal for after dinner.

We have asked nagiffag to pick the venue, and after the dinner there will not be further group activity. Please note not all Fodorites are comfortable for posting their real names and e-mail addresses here so all communication for the GTG arrangements will be conducted on this thread.

If your schedule allows, please attend the GTG on 11/2.

kuranosuke -- if you come, we can go have chicken paws together!

kuranosuke Oct 5th, 2007 04:09 PM

s, i'll take a rain check on that. lol.

Shanghainese Oct 8th, 2007 08:40 AM

nagiffag -- Could you please choose a restaurant and set a time to dinner?

Nutella Oct 9th, 2007 05:52 AM

I leave for China next week, but I'll be checking online during my trip so if plans aren't finalized or change I'll be sure to get the info from this thread. Looking forward to dinner! :)

nagiffag Oct 9th, 2007 07:53 AM

Sorry for the delay. Just got back today from a trip to North Korea. Our 6 month old is thought to be the youngest American to visit since the war. She was mobbed everywhere we went! Interesting trip. Supposedly we got more access than is normal. We'll tell you about it at the GTG, if you're interested.

How about 7pm on Friday, Nov 2, at Lost Heaven (Yunnan Folk Cuisine)? 38 Gao You Lu near Fuxing Xi Lu. Phone 6433-5126. Here are reviews and a map.
http://www.smartshanghai.com/venue/2...isine_shanghai
I have an Enjoy card that will give us a discount too. If you want different time or type of cuisine pls tell me and I (or Susan) can make another suggestion. Susan, also feel free to propose and organize the after dinner activity you mentioned.

How many are we? Me=2, Nutella=1, Shanghainese=1? Chinatourguide/Susan? Anyone else?

Shanghainese Oct 9th, 2007 09:59 AM

nagiffag -- Have you been up all night? Thanks very much for a great choice, I haven't been there before so really looking forward to a wonderful treat. And I can't wait to hear about your N. Korea trip, didn't realize your baby girl is only 6 months old, starting young as the next generation of Fodorites!

It'll be myself for now. naumannsara is going to Tokyo unless her plans change.

Nutella -- Please ask your hotel desk to write down the chinese name and address of Lost Heaven restaurant so you can give it to the cab driver, it is on the west side of the old french concession, very nice area.

nagiffag Oct 9th, 2007 09:59 PM

Nutella, you can also go to the link in my last post and you'll see a link for a Taxi printout. It says "Print this and show it to the taxi driver, and you will hopefully arrive at Lost Heaven - Yunnan Folk Cuisine" Funny how they put the word "hopefully" in there.

Nutella Oct 10th, 2007 07:13 AM

Got it! LOL about the "hopefully" :)

Shanghainese Oct 10th, 2007 08:15 AM

I like the taxi printout, it's smart to add some simple chinese phrases for practice while "hopefully" the taxi will arrive at Lost Heaven. The chinese name is interesting as "Flower Horse Heaven", is it a reference to the tea horses in Yunan? My mother's home is 2 blocks away on Huashan Road and my father used to work on Gao You Lu.

nagiffag Oct 11th, 2007 02:45 AM

Small world. I work at Huashan Lu/Fuxing Lu. I saw a blind woman fall into a manhole on GouYou Lu. Ok, only one leg. Seriously.

Shanghainese Oct 11th, 2007 08:21 AM

nagifagg -- Small world indeed! Love that area, our family have lived around there for 70 years starting on Hengshan Lu (in the house adjacent to the church), then Anfu Lu and Changle Lu (the house is now a consulate), my mom refuses to move away. I started in schools on Hengshan Lu and Huashan Lu, and my DD went to kindergarten on Wuyuan Lu, I'm getting nostalgic here.

DM says 70 years ago Gaoyou Lu was almost rural with farmers growing corn, bok choy and pumpkins. She has only one small bedroom so I visit daily, and move around and stay with relatives who have more bedrooms.

So sad about the blind woman, I'll make sure to watch for manholes while walking on Gaoyou Lu!

Shanghainese Oct 15th, 2007 12:24 PM

Nutella and nagiffag -- I feel I know you already even without real names! Just in case, I will be holding a Fodor's luggage tag as I.D.

Shanghainese Oct 18th, 2007 01:22 PM

Nutellla -- Are you heading out tomorrow? Have a fantastic time and see you in Shanghai on 11/2!

Nutella Oct 19th, 2007 05:10 AM

Hello from Beijing! See you soon :)

Shanghainese Oct 24th, 2007 08:16 AM

I received the Fodor's goodies last night. Thanks so much, Katie, you are so sweet!

Sara and Susan -- Are you coming to the 11/2 GTG? I leave for China tomorrow, see everyone at the Lost Heaven restaurant at 7 pm, I can hardly wait!

nagiffag Oct 24th, 2007 08:54 PM

Reservation is under the name "Fodors". See you there!

Shanghainese Oct 27th, 2007 06:48 AM

I have been in Shanghai for 27 hours already, ate lunch at my DM's home and walked with her to the corner of Huashan/Fuxi Lu's, dinner was at Xiao Nan Guo in the Ruijin Hotel compound. Going to a wedding in the countryside Sunday.

Shanghainese Oct 31st, 2007 05:25 PM

Nutella -- Hope all is well, are you in Shanghai yet? See you Friday night!
