I would also reconfirm a couple of days prior to arrival just to make sure, and also to give my pick up info again if they were picking me up from the airport or train, just to remind them that they were picking me up.

Ditto the above, plus check the hotel's cancellation policy when you make the reservation in case you have to change plans at the last minute. The hotel website is usually not a problem, but some sites like Orbitz and Travelocity don't give refunds. Once you've bought it, it's yours.
