Los Angeles GTG 2009

Okay gang.

So I think we've finally chosen a weekend for the grand event.

The 2009 LA GTG will be the weekend of March 20th.

Since I'm in the extremely early phases of planning, details are few and far between right now. The main event will be on Saturday (the 21st) of that weekend...with additional side gatherings for those who will be coming in from out-of-town.

I cannot claim to even try to surpass Guen's marvelous GTG last year. I can only humbly try my best to keep you all entertained in the OTHER City of Angels.

All of the the local posters here are looking forward, I'm sure, as am I, to seeing everyone again and to meeting new faces. I'm certain, as well, that there's a whole crop of new community members that haven't had the chance to come to a GTG before...I hope you'll join, if possible. It's wonderful to be able to meet and talk with people who share the same passion about traveling to the same places you do.

We can start the attendance ticker here on the boards. Eventually, once more details have been secured, I'll ask you all to email me your info so I can create a mailing list to keep all potential attendees updated on how things are shaping up.

Those of you who are local, I'm always happy to have all the help I can get. So please feel free to reach out and let me know if you have any interest in assisting. I'm sure, as we get closer, I'll definitely need some help.

Looking forward to the party!

rhkkmk Aug 9th, 2008 07:48 PM

Kathie Aug 9th, 2008 08:14 PM

We plan to be there!

Guenmai Aug 9th, 2008 08:15 PM

If all goes well with family, I plan to come. Happy Travels!

Nywoman Aug 10th, 2008 03:19 AM

Since I will miss Boston, which is almost next door, and not having been to an Asia board GTG. I'll try for a cross country one.

simpsonc510 Aug 10th, 2008 06:23 AM

Hoping I (we) can make it, but not sure yet.
Carol

hawaiiantraveler Aug 10th, 2008 05:34 PM

We will try to be there

Aloha!

Kristina Aug 10th, 2008 07:11 PM

I should be able to make it.

rhkkmk Aug 10th, 2008 07:19 PM

if linda comes maybe filmwill will find a dance place for her to perform....an LA GTG would not be the same without it..

crosscheck Aug 10th, 2008 08:46 PM

I can help - Bob has my email.

Femi Aug 11th, 2008 08:36 AM

Maybe Guen can forward you her list with our e-mail addresses. Let me know what needs to be done...

rhkkmk Aug 11th, 2008 09:19 AM

femi---start cooming small quantities of various CA foods that you think we might like and send us each a sample and we will get back to you....

Guenmai Aug 11th, 2008 09:37 AM

Let me know who wants his/her e-mail address sent over to Filmwil and I'll send it over. I have my list at home. I won't send any e-mail addresses without permission. Happy Travels!

simpsonc510 Aug 11th, 2008 09:49 AM

guenmai
You can share my email address. I hope to make it to the GTG, but there may be a conflict... might not know until a month ahead. I'd like to be kept informed.
Carol

Kathie Aug 11th, 2008 12:00 PM

You are welcome to share my email as well, Guen.

filmwill Aug 11th, 2008 01:55 PM

Guen, you should email me (or anyone should who needs to get in touch/has questions) to my new email:
[email protected]

Keep in mind, though, that this is in the early stages of planning--so I don't have any specifics right now.

As far as hotels, let me get a better sense of where the "main event" will be held, and I think that would be the best place to stay near.

If anyone has any time constraints on bookings, just contact me directly and I can try and give you some advice regarding lodging.

So excited about this--glad you guys are too!

laurieco Aug 11th, 2008 02:07 PM

I'd certainly like to come and will pencil it in on my calendar.

Femi Aug 11th, 2008 03:40 PM

Ha ha Bob! :P

rhkkmk Aug 11th, 2008 06:47 PM

billy, do you still have the other address as well, as i just sent something there??

share my address of course, either one...

waynehazle Aug 11th, 2008 08:57 PM

I look forward to meeting all of you!

rhkkmk Aug 12th, 2008 08:30 AM

i ahve booked my flights so we are in for sure...

btw, continental has some great prices from providence to lax at the moment---$198+

Guenmai Aug 12th, 2008 09:34 AM

It's good to book flights early before anymore possible fuel hikes. I'm glad I booked my BK ticket for Dec 2008/Jan 2009 in Feb 2008. I also had a few tickets booked within the U.S. before the big hikes. Happy Travels!

hawaiiantraveler Aug 12th, 2008 11:34 AM

Not too early maybe....I am seeing $1076.99 via UA r/t HNL-LAX in March 09. Think I'll wait a little while before pulling the trigger on those tix ;)

Aloha!

Guenmai Aug 12th, 2008 12:08 PM

The Hawaii-L.A./L.A.-Hawaii fares are usually crazy. They aren't the norm in booking fares. Happy Travels!

Thyra Aug 12th, 2008 03:32 PM

Hey There, I may stop by (I used to post eons ago.. but some freaky nasty posting got me off the boards for about oh... like 5 years... ) India has brought me back.. where are you in LA? We are in Burbank.

waynehazle Aug 12th, 2008 05:50 PM

Glendale right next door to Burbank

kuranosuke Aug 12th, 2008 06:30 PM

guen you are right. ua fares out of hawaii to popular destinations are always out of whack. once in a while, you might catch a good fare.

every tue. ua has efare sale, cheap flts to may destinations. the only time i ever saw hnl in that list was during the sars period.

accumulated ua ff miles are worth alot more now for us islanders.

kuranosuke Aug 12th, 2008 06:32 PM

ht, what if you bought 35k ff miles from ua at $.025, and redeemed them for a free tkt? would that work?

rhkkmk Aug 12th, 2008 08:38 PM

why not and they are offering a bonus now ....no i think that is delta offering the bonus...

mrwunrfl Aug 13th, 2008 12:09 AM

" at yahoo dot com is my e-mail address.

Seal Beach would be a good place to have it, but I am biased. Or Surf City (Huntington Beach). Both are near Long Beach (LGB) airport (jetBlue, Delta, USAir) and Orange County airport (SNA). Only a half hour from LAX.

Manhattan Beach might be better. Some place down by the pier. It is minutes from LAX and there are lots of hotels and motels in the area.

filmwill Aug 13th, 2008 07:13 AM

Hey guys. So it's definitely going to be in LA. Logisitically, planning something somewhere else (Valley, South Bay, OC, etc.) is going to be harder for me.

Plus, there's a lot of great undiscovered gems in the urban sprawl.

No specifics yet--hold tight and I'll have more info hopefully in a few weeks.

Guenmai Aug 13th, 2008 09:43 AM

I agree. Plan it where it's convenient for you. I would not want to plan a GTG way down in OC and I don't live down there or have any contacts down there. Happy Travels!

mrwunrfl Aug 13th, 2008 11:47 AM

No problem. I'd like to help but probably can't up north. I'm will tho, my e-mail is at yahoo dot com.

Gpanda Aug 14th, 2008 01:22 AM

Good news, bad news. I just booked my flight to attend the LA GTG. Bob is still planning to come. I'll let you decide which is which.

Now, we need to have some idea of the general ,location of the main event, so we can book hotels. We have little knowledge of the geography.

Hanuman Aug 14th, 2008 01:49 AM

Andy,

May I suggest the Beverly Wilshire and stay in a room in the old building. The hotel will allow speedos around the pool and hey you might get discovered by some producers(porn?)!

Gpanda Aug 14th, 2008 04:58 AM

Pook-remember, Bob is going to be there too. The BW is not a place for him. We'll be lucky to get a place with A/C. This is a hardship voyage. He's threatening to go on priceline aqnd bid $25. Can't wait.

Speedos are the norm in LA. I won't even br noticed.

Hanuman Aug 14th, 2008 05:11 AM

"Speedos are the norm in LA. I won't even be noticed"... poor Andy! Try stuffing a sock in the speedo.

simpsonc510 Aug 14th, 2008 06:23 AM

Looks like the BOS contingency is planning to attend the LA GTG. I'm hoping the Illinois group can also make it, but I must wait until after the first of the year to see if it is going to happen. There may be a very important conflict for us.

I like staying in the Santa Monica and Marina Del Rey area. Have stayed there many times. Would that be handy enough to the possible GTG site(s)? Also, I've stayed at the Hyatt on Sunset a couple of times.

I'm sure this will be a fun GTG for anyone who can make the trip.

Carol

rhkkmk Aug 14th, 2008 07:29 AM

when they stop laughing he might be noticed...sock or no sock...
