honolulu gtg in september 2007

the gtg in honolulu has been set for sep. 22, saturday.

for our mainland fodorites, if you are planning to attend, think about coming by friday afternoon so you can attend the waikiki hoolaulea, part of the aloha week festival, on friday nite.

we plan to attend, so we all can dance down kalakaua ave together.

who knows, we may have a pre-hoolaulea gtg with light refreshments to energize us for the festivities on kalakaua.

we are open to what you all want to do on sat. nite. i hope the locals will chime in too with suggestions.

all welcome. :-)

Kathie May 23rd, 2007 07:39 PM

We are all set to come! We will be there on Friday afternoon. I have to google "hoolaulea" so I'm prepared for the festivities!

kuranosuke May 23rd, 2007 07:45 PM

Ken,HT & Linda,

I'd love to attend but I don't seem to have any appropriate clothes...just Florida stuff!

Seriously, from Hotlanta this is 9 and 1/2 hours -for a weekend -- closer to go to Europe. See-I did give it a look/see!! I'll have to include Hawaii as a rest stop on the way to SEA sometime.

Be sure to keep all us green-eyed stay-at-homers posted on the wild parties. Don't forget to post photos of Guen, Ken and everyone in their grassskirts!! (that beats speed-dos)

polly, polly, polly,,, too bad, you have such beautiful hawaiian attire already, that you would have been right at home here. ;-) but, there is always next time.

simpsonc510 May 24th, 2007 03:30 AM

I don't have my reservations just yet, but you can count on me! If possible, I'll try to get bradinbangkok to come along. He hasn't been in Hawaii since 1976! Think it's changed? lol
Carol

Guenmai May 24th, 2007 06:49 AM

Are we going to post under just one Honolulu GTG thread? Happy Travels!

kuranosuke May 24th, 2007 09:26 AM

ok, carol, we'll count you in as one. do your best to bring brad with you.

guen, lets just use this thread as the "official" honolulu gtg posting board.

Sorry, kuranosuke, I was in the Big Island earlier this year, have to go home in fall to see DM. I know you'll all have great fun, can't wait to see the pix! Aloha!!

kuranosuke May 24th, 2007 09:58 AM

shanghainese, too bad, had the chicken paws ready for you, but mom comes first.

Shanghainese May 24th, 2007 11:13 AM

Check out what we ate last night, Mels was disappointed about no chicken paws on the menu but her face lightened up when she kissed the pig's knuckle and couldn't keep her paws away from it all night!

mrwunrfl May 24th, 2007 11:24 AM

wonderful. i made reservations at three Sheratons in Waikiki for that wkend. UA must drop their fares - probably in July or Aug, then I will know. Unless I get a cheap ticket to Nagoya before that.

kuranosuke May 24th, 2007 04:18 PM

great bill. mentaiko on ice.

kuranosuke May 24th, 2007 04:21 PM

s, i love pig's knuckle too. the best i had was at jimmy's kitchen central in hong kong. sounds like mels having a good time.

Shanghainese May 24th, 2007 05:51 PM

K: It's really shank, salt and peppered with crispy skin and fall off the bone meat, the chef said the dish migrated from HK to SH, but you know SF is closer to HI than the others if you want to taste it again.

I posted the entire menu already, see the GTG Report on the US/Cal Board.

simpsonc510 May 25th, 2007 06:56 PM

Still looking at ticket prices right now, but I will buy something soon. I plan to come out for one week, if I'm going to fly so far!! It's about 8.5 hours from ORD... like flying to ZRH!

Tell me about this hoolaulea party. What should I expect? Will I need a grass skirt? Illinois doesn't have a lot to pick from ... lol

Carol

kuranosuke May 26th, 2007 12:16 AM

carol, the hoolaulea is like a big block party. kalakaua ave is closed to traffic, and the whole ave. is filled with stages that feature free entertainment, and food booths.

i think shorts and a polo/t-shirt would be appropriate attire.

i'm hoping we can all meet, and walk down kalakaua together.

simpsonc510 May 26th, 2007 04:47 AM

Sounds fantastic! I'll (we'll?) be there!
Carol

Kathie May 26th, 2007 09:58 AM

Where is Lcuy? If I remember correctly, she's traveling right now. I do hope she can be at the gtg!

hawaiiantraveler May 26th, 2007 02:36 PM

lcuy is in Vietnam right now with mari808 and freinds I think. Then on to bkk.....lucky people!

Aloha!

simpsonc510 May 26th, 2007 02:43 PM

I tried to email isismonroe about this date, but my email came back. If anyone sees isis and/or Russ, give them a heads up. And ask her to send me an updated email address...

Carol

Isis, if you're out there, my email came back...

Kathie May 26th, 2007 02:53 PM

Thanks, HT.

Carol, yes, I'd love to see Isis and Russ again as well. (And I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting from the first HNL gtg)

simpsonc510 May 31st, 2007 06:21 AM

Any thoughts about the Ohana East vs the Ohana Waikiki Beachcomber hotels? Prices are quite similar for a 1-week stay during September.

Carol

nanabee May 31st, 2007 08:35 AM

Kathie are you by any chance from Portland?
Avalee

kuranosuke May 31st, 2007 08:42 AM

carol, if i had to choose, i would stay at the beachcomber, its right on kalakaua, and i think the ohana east is on kuhio.

simpsonc510 May 31st, 2007 08:43 AM

Thanks Ken. I was leaning towards the Beachcomber! There's something about being so close to Waikiki Beach (and NOT paying the price of the HHV or the Outrigger Reef on the Beach).

Carol

hawaiiantraveler May 31st, 2007 08:44 AM

carol,

The Ohana Beachcomber is in the heart of Waikiki on Kalakaua next to the Int'e Market Place. Rooms are the same at both locations.....I guess you could say that the Beachcomber is a better hotel because of its location.

Ask for a upper level room so you can get an ocean view in the Beachcomber.

Either one is a good choice actually.

This hotel I list below is just outside of Waikiki proper(5 minute walk from the zoo) but right on the beach and priced like an off beach property. Love the Hau Tree Lanai for breakfasts.

Aloha!

Kathie May 31st, 2007 08:51 AM

nanabee, no, I'm from Seattle.

Guenmai May 31st, 2007 09:41 AM

Carol...I accidentally posted to you about Honolulu Hotels under Bill's Paris report. I guess I should stop multi-tasking. Smiles. Happy Travels!

simpsonc510 May 31st, 2007 10:23 AM

guen
Thanks for the link to your HNL hotel suggestion. Much appreciated.

HT
I looked at your suggestion also. Very nice! Thanks for the link.

But, I think I will book the Beachcomber. I do like being close to the beach (even though I'm not a beach person, per se) and I like being close to the Int'l market place and all the other shopping/dining locations.

United has a really good price on a flight/hotel package at the Beachcomber. I checked the hotel's own rates and they seemed about $20 higher per night! Travelocity was also higher than UA, so I think I've pretty much made up my mind to the UA Escape package (no car).

Thanks everyone.

Carol

simpsonc510 Jun 1st, 2007 02:32 PM

It's booked! Beachcomber, 7 nts. Yipeee! I hope I don't have to cancel due to unforeseen circumstances like I had to last year... cross your fingers.
Carol

guenmai... are you coming ?

Kathie Jun 1st, 2007 03:24 PM

Carol, I'm glad you're all set! We'll see you in Honolulu!

hawaiiantraveler Jun 8th, 2007 12:12 PM

ttt

any other locals coming??

MelissaHI Jun 8th, 2007 06:36 PM

I just found this thread. Is it OK if non-Asia board people come?

kuranosuke Jun 8th, 2007 07:44 PM

melissa, c'mon, don't ask such a silly question.

of course, you and all the other fodorites are welcomed, including the other local fordorites.

MelissaHI Jun 8th, 2007 07:57 PM

hee hee. gotta make sure ya know! I sent an email to some others who don't come on the Asia board but are fun nevertheless. (not quite the partyers you are, though......)

lcuy Jun 9th, 2007 08:12 PM

So, kathie, Carol, guenmai, k-suke, HT, doing the conga down Kalakaua Ave... This will be something to see!

I'm coming, but only if I can get really cheap tickets! Put me down as a 1, maybe two for dinner on Saturday! My husband is beginning to wonder about you all.

We have done Thai and korean meals at our last two larger GTGs. Whats it going to be this time? Japanese? Vietnamese? (I got hooked on the food of Vietnam...you'll eventually see my trip report which will explain the extra 10 lbs I gained...;-) )

And Mels..I'm sorry I missed today...I am madly trying to catch up from the trip and trying to get ready to leave again on thurs for a wedding in San Diego. I might be able to meet Wed eve...got to go re-read the details.you ARE Ms GTG of Hawaii, so we EXPECT you there! And Mari and I think you should come to Asia on the next trip she plans...This one was a WINNER!!

So, kathie, Carol, guenmai, k-suke, HT, doing the conga down Kalakaua Ave... This will be something to see!

Kathie Jun 9th, 2007 08:40 PM

Lcuy, I do hope you'll be there! And Vietnamese food sounds great to me!

kuranosuke Jun 9th, 2007 11:07 PM

well, lucy, i thought you were awol for a while. i was ready to send out the shore patrol looking for you. lol

the conga is good for me, even the macarena. whatever the group wants. welcome back.

simpsonc510 Jun 10th, 2007 06:50 AM

Tell me about Vietnamese food. What am I missing? We ate at one of the fave places in BKK and were not at all impressed. We had a Thai friend with us to help with ordering. I have strange food allergies so have to be very careful about eating "new" things. I'll dine where ever the GTG crowd wants to go, but I may stop by Mc's for an Asian salad afterwards... lol...

This dancing down Kalakua Ave sounds like it just might compete with guenmai's GTG...

Lucy, please try to come! We've never really had a chance to talk much, yet.

Carol
