Goodbye, Carol Simpson

Sad news today. Carol Simpson passed away. She was an active traveler and Fodorite right up to the end. I can't remember how many times we met along with other Fodorites. Many Honolulu and Boston GTGs and others in Bangkok, Los Angeles, Pasadena. My deepest sympathy to her family.

Kathie Feb 13th, 2017 04:08 PM

Carol was a special person. She will be missed. My condolences to her son, Brad, and her husband and all of her extended family and friends.

thursdaysd Feb 13th, 2017 04:30 PM

I am so sorry to hear that. Thanks for letting us know.

MaryW Feb 13th, 2017 05:54 PM

That is such sad news. She was a lovely lady and fun to be with. I wish we could have met again in Bangkok. My condolences to her family.

rhkkmk Feb 13th, 2017 07:39 PM

she will be missed by all of us. she was always so chipper.

she had the guts and grit to return to her beloved Bangkok one last time over Christmas, 2016, when she really felt poorly.

Evidently she was at home until yesterday, under hospice care. Within the last week she made her final visit to their "shop".

Fodors Asia Board will not be the same without her!!

Even though I never met Carol, I felt like I knew her from all the posting she wrote here. They were always informational, fun, different with her energy and joy for life. It seems that it was only a few days ago that I was reading her postings from her beloved Bangkok. I am so happy she was able to have those last current memories. Thoughts, prayers and strength for all her family and dear friends.

CaliforniaLady Feb 13th, 2017 08:57 PM

I also never met Carol, but I so enjoyed her recent postings from Bangkok. It is so lovely that she was able to take that trip, one last time. She seemed like a classy lady.

CaliNurse Feb 13th, 2017 10:33 PM

Thank you for posting, Lcuy. Always hard to learn something like this about a Fodors Family member. I knew her only thorough her words, which will, of course, continue to provide knowledge and insights.

mrwunrfl Feb 13th, 2017 10:47 PM

Oh no, so sad. She was a wonderful lady.

Bob, yes, "so chipper" is right.

FromDC Feb 14th, 2017 03:00 AM

So sorry to hear the news, always loved raiding her posts. Condolences to the family.

mr_go Feb 14th, 2017 04:15 AM

It is a sad day indeed, here in Fodorville. Carol was a special lady, a traveler's traveler, and the sort of person who made Fodors what it is.

She had exactly the sort of attitude and outlook that I aspire to. She was a smart lady with strong opinions, but always stated in a positive way. Pure class, with a decidedly Midwestern accent. And nothing broke her stride...she always wanted to talk about her next trip, and never about her difficulties.

RIP Carol.

When I think of a Fodorite, I think of Carol Simpson. She traveled the world freely...Europe, Asia,USA. We will miss you at the GTGs and your reports here on the Fourms. LOve to Bob, Brad, and all her family.

Marija Feb 14th, 2017 07:18 AM

RIP, Carol.

hawaiiantraveler Feb 14th, 2017 07:58 AM

Love and condolences to Bob, Brad and family.

Linda and I first met Carol at the first LA GTG. In fact she was the first fodorite we ever met. Since then we have crossed paths in Bangkok, Pasadena, Boston, and every year on her October trips to Hawaii. We even traveled to Kona one year together along with the kuranosukes.

Courage, fortitude, and grace, Carol is someone I will always remember fondly.

And I smile as I say this but I will think of her every time I eat a pizza or have a cup of Haagen Daz ice cream at a mall.

Aloha Oe my friend!

progol Feb 14th, 2017 10:08 AM

Sorry to hear this - it's very sad news. While I never met Carol, either, I enjoyed reading about her trips to Bangkok and loved her passion for the city. How wonderful that she was able to make every moment count, traveling to the last. My condolences to the family, too.

cigalechanta Feb 14th, 2017 10:45 AM

Carol was one of the kindest, generous person one could meet. during her treatments she was always trying to cheer us. one less star will be shining in the sky

gomiki Feb 14th, 2017 10:46 AM

mr_go expressed my thoughts perfectly. Carol was a wonder. She will be missed. It was always a pleasure to see her in Boston.
My deepest condolences to Bob and Brad and family.

AGM_Cape_Cod Feb 14th, 2017 10:52 AM

So sad to hear this news. She was a lively woman who brightened up the Boston GTGs. Glad she was able to travel up through Dec. My condolences to her family.

Mara Feb 14th, 2017 12:06 PM

I often read her posts about Bangkok - always so interesting.
RIP and condolences...

Craig Feb 14th, 2017 02:57 PM

Jeane and I extend our condolences to Brad and the rest of her family. We spent many GTG's with Carol as she was a frequent visitor to New England to be with the Asia Board Fodorites. We also had the good fortune to have Carol to ourselves in Singapore a few years ago, sharing travel stories in the Club Lounge at the Intercontinental. RIP, Carol - you will be missed...

Lolazahra Feb 14th, 2017 07:02 PM

Thank you so much for posting. I never met Carol but boy did I love posting to her threads when she was in her beloved Bangkok, up until the last one. I found such fun in reading her musings as she went about life in her favorite city. She was such an authentic writer and truly gave us a unique insight and perspective into Bangkok and her other favorite vacation spots in Thailand. I hope someone will go and toast her at the Pickeled Liver! My deepest condolences to her immediate family and her Thai friends and extended family.

I am so sorry to read this. Carol was always so helpful on these boards sharing her passion for BKK so freely. We met her on our first trip to BKK and she seemed to enjoy showing us the ropes. She certainly taught us quite a lot in one afternoon. My condolences to her family. She will be missed on Fodors.

I am just seeing this and want to say how sorry I am to hear this. I am glad I got to see Carol this fall. She was always so enthusiastic and was a great traveler. I will miss her and reading her Thailand trip reports. My sincere condolences to her family.

Nikki Feb 16th, 2017 04:39 PM

I am so sorry to hear this. Carol spoke about her travel even when she was very ill and wasn't going to let her illness or treatments get in the way of getting up and going. I was amazed to hear of the trips she took up until the very end, and I had hoped that meant that her illness was not progressing. I guess what it really meant was that she was determined to keep living as long as she was alive and to make the most of her days. I admire that spirit.

BradinBangkok Feb 17th, 2017 05:13 AM

Thank you all.

Here is her obit.: http://obituaries.galesburg.com/obit...&pid=184161443

There will be a celebration of life on March 12. And there will be a private room reserved the night before at her favorite local restaurant. Attending Fodorites are welcome to join us for dinner.

Guenmai Feb 17th, 2017 09:40 AM

Maybe we should link Lucy's and my thread together.

Happy Travels!

I am so very sorry to learn of Carol's passing. What a lady, and what magnificent energy she had! I told her she always brought something special and unique to each of the Fodor's Boston GTGs we'd meet up at, and I'm glad I did, especially in light of how things turned out.

Brad, you and your family have my deepest sympathy. She spoke of you often, and I'm sure you know how very much Carol treasured her family.

RIP, Carol. I hope you've discovered that heaven looks a lot like Bangkok and Zurich and Galesburg and even a little bit like Boston sometimes.

I am very sorry to hear of Carol's passing. I so admired her strength, and resolve to continue living life to it's fullest even after her diagnosis. I met Carol at several GTG's, and knew immediately that she was a very special person. My sincere condolences to her family.

Sad to hear this news . . .

Jaya Feb 22nd, 2017 01:58 PM

This is sad to hear. I met Carol at one of the Boston GTGs 4 or 5 years ago.

DonTopaz Jul 1st, 2017 04:31 AM

Carol was such an upbeat person and a joy to be around. It looked like the number 10 when we stood talking to each other, and we had nothing but fun yakking about where we’d been and were off to next.

WMPT Jul 2nd, 2017 03:07 AM

We will miss you Carol!

Oh dear - as I feared/suspected.

I missed the original post, too, but I know how helpful she was to the Asia forum. It's always sad to hear about the passing of someone who touched so many lives.

PaganiPilot Aug 2nd, 2017 07:43 AM

oh no!!!!! I am so saddened by Carol's passing!:( I was just perusing the forums which I havent done for ages and wanted to see if Carol had any Bkk posts, like she always has had up. What a shock....I had the opportunity to meet her at a Haagen Dazs in Central Plaza (?) back in 2006 or so but we never were able to coordinate :( I regret missing her that trip. Will miss you, Carol!!
