anyone catch planet food thailand on food network sunday night? imho, it validated orgy7's comments. its a great show, and all you bkk fodorites may recognize a few of the sites and locations. everything looked good to me, but i pass on the insects, and the very old egg.

spy. Im just messing around but I ment if a resteraount has a front fassad, a wall, window. and door. then it's upscale. many nighberhood resteraunts are open air, many were once car garages.

kuranosuk.. the crickets are actually not bad..taste like peanuts.

I agree with rhkkmk, you'll have a wonderful meal in the Peninsula, at the Thalaytip or a buffet dinner at the River Cafe and Terrace, but I would go for the first.
I also went to Lemongrass and didn't like it , the food, ambiance and location. If you have only one night in Bangkok and you're staying at the Peninsula I can't see a better place for a wonderful meal. Enjoy it and have a great trip. I was also in the Peninsula and Koh Samui some weeks ago and loved it.

Peninsula it is (thanks rhkkmk-I emailed the Pen & got a pavillion). Thanks for those who offered advice. We'll pass on the "real" Thai ambiance as we've been there, done that. We're celebrating our 5th anniversary so a little decadence is in order.

after or before your meal go upstairs to jesters and have a drink...it too is lovely and not to be missed....5th only happens once, and for many it never happens!!! they don't get that far...

Damn bar girls!!... years later I walked threw a market and found a stall of insects. when I saw the beatles my brain connected the dots. and was grossed out. off course I proceeded and bought a 3 inch scorpian.. damn that bad boy took me a while too get down..

dont ask me why I did so.. I usually run away and screem like a litle girl when I see an insect.

Sorry orgy7-shoulda given all the details. Jesters looks awesome. Really can't wait to be pampered, have heard so many wonderful things about the Pen. in Bkk. The one in Chicago is to die for so this will be a treat.

don't know if it applies to you or not, but if you have an early morning flight from bkk, the penn prepares the most wonderful breakfast on a "heated" cart for breakfast service in your room...sitting with a lovely breakfast with that great riverside view is hard to beat....

i always ask for a room as high up as i can...the view from up there seems even more magical...

tea in the lobby is also very nice...

so many options, so little time....

by the way the penn will e-mail you the menu from the restaurant so you can study which of the choices you might want.....i took the middle set meal at 2200B as i think i told you...based on some of the dishes we preferred...

rhkkmk--are you sure you don't work for the Pen? If not, they should pay you for all the raves...only joking of course. Appreciate the tips as always. We'll be leaving for 5 days for Samui the following day so the in-room breakfast will have to wait. Will e-mail them tonight requesting higher floor room. Thanks again!

two really good restaurants at samui that we tried were the terrace restaurant, just south of chaewaeng beach on the main road going south...high on a cliff overlooking the water and rolling hills....great place as the sun goes down...

also five islands restaurant, set all by itself, not far from the meredien hotel on the SW side of the island...

i don't work for the penn...some have accused me of the same thing for the marriott resort and spa in bkk....i would gladly work for either if i could get a discount!!!!

Definitely will try out one of the restaurants suggested. Keep 'em coming!

The Marriott boat only takes to the taksin train, right, not further to hotels?

take the marriott boat to the skytrain pier and switch boats and go on the oriental or the penn boat to their hotels....same pier...

i often take a taxi to the penn from the marriott....less than 65 B....that way you arrive refreshed...i then take the boats back....when you leave the penn make sure you get on the skytrain boat as they have others going to other places...can i come with you??

re: Royal Thai: so it is possible to have classic thai meal at what so called "royal thai" restaurants. We are going on Manohra cruise http://www.anohracruises.com and they claim they serve royal thai dinners.
Also, in Chiang Mai we plan to eat at grand Lanna, http://www.grandlanna.com

Would it be safe to assume we are getting "best thai food"?

ps. although I can eat spicy Thai food here, I will probably stick with medium spicy in Thailand. I've read that Bagkok hot is really hot!
