You look at Thailand through western eyes, but you're not in the west.

You don't see many emotions in Thailand. That means you don't see road rage, you dont see muggings, assaults, robberies, rape, etc. Thais consider display of emotions as loss of face.

If you are walking in Thailand, it is because you are poor. Walk signs do no good, since Thai drivers actually accelerate for pedestrians. The bigger you are, the more status you have, the more right of way you have. If you dont want to be run over, don't be walking.

Since you are walking, you are not mixing with the middle and upper class Thais. Therefore, you will not see the trendy clothes. If you want to see the nice clothes, look at the people riding in the MB's and Jags and Bimmers, they wont be walking.

Every city on earth has it's rich, poor and everything in between. Your views suggest you wasted your hard earned money taking that trip. But then again if your maoney was not hard earned then I guess your expectations could have only been met if you stayed in a 5 star hotel during you brief visit.
