http://blogs.wsj.com/indiarealtime/2...s-not-a-crime/

The government says it’s because of "various factors e.g. level of education/illiteracy, poverty, myriad social customs and values, religious beliefs, mindset of the society to treat the marriage as a sacrament, etc."

"“If marital rape is brought under the law, the entire family system will be under great stress,” a report submitted by lawmakers to Parliament had said in 2013"

Heaven forbid a woman should be able to say no and have it taken seriously. After all, rape is a sacrament.

dreadful, thursdaysd, I agree.

on a slightly different but related topic, the BCC are reporting that the alleged would-be assassins of Mallala have been prosecuted in a trial so secret, no-one even knew it was happening.

Sadly, gang rape is only the tip of the iceberg in the brutality against women and girls there:

Wow, thanks for the link, kja. If those allegations are true, that is very troubling, since she was in a five star hotel and with a tour group.

I had read about this incident in an English language Japanese newspaper that I get online but I can't find that link....

thursdaysd Dec 6th, 2016 10:45 AM

Thanks for the additional link. Key quote from it:

"Sexual attacks on tourists in India are widespread, with several western countries warning visitors about the risk."

I have traveled extensively in India on my own, I have a few years still to run on a ten year visa, and there are areas in the northwest I would like to see, but I am becoming more and more reluctant to go back. Maybe I'll go back to Nepal instead...

CaliNurse Dec 6th, 2016 10:56 AM

"In Nepal, three rape cases are reported every week. Many more cases go unreported. Women and girls are not safe whether they are at home, school, street, public transport or the workplace."

http://therisingnepal.org.np/news/2355

I don't know how recent this is.

thursdaysd Dec 6th, 2016 11:19 AM

Oh. Thanks. I think.

CaliforniaLady Dec 7th, 2016 10:07 AM

Oh no. I just got my plane ticket for next September, and I'm headed to the southernmost state of Tamil Nadu. Let's all hope and pray that this will all get better soon.

kja Dec 7th, 2016 07:23 PM

Best wishes for a safe and enjoyable trip, CaliforniaLady.

CaliforniaLady Dec 7th, 2016 08:16 PM

Oh thank you, kja. I wish I could have you plan my trip for me--you are so good at it!

kja Dec 7th, 2016 08:22 PM

@ CaliforniaLady: What an awesome compliment! But of course, I can only plan for MY interests -- and even then, I certainly have my misses. I'm sure you'll have a wonderful trip with your own planning -- and just hope that all goes well. And, of course, I hope to learn from your experiences -- I haven't been to India yet.

Gang Rapes in India is a big problem but it seems that at after a long time, peoples aren't just shrugging it off anymore. The media is also concerned about that, the public is outraged and the higher ups are being pressured. Once the elections end, So now diverted focus would also come back to these issues for a better country.

kja Feb 7th, 2019 11:32 PM

Apparently not a gang rape this time, but the victim was a 5-year-old girl. Breaks my heart.

Awful! One can only hope that the rapists are found, brought to justice and suffer an punishment commensurate with the heinous crime they committed.

vp_singh Feb 10th, 2019 09:18 PM

They are being caught, brought to justice, sent to jail for the rest of their dirty lives and in some cases, hanged till death!!

Do you mean in this specific case? Since ONE person has been arrested (not tried as yet), and you use the plural "they", it appears you are referring to Indian rapists in general, in which case I fear that your statement is NOT true. Some are, but I doubt it is even a majority.

Let the reader judge...!

c. In the Delhi Gang rape of 2012, the Supreme Court has confirmed death sentence of 3 criminals.
d. In 11 such cases death sentence commuted to Life Imprisonment till death!

Honestly, it seems to me that 19,000 cases (of what, exactly?) in a country where reporting of crimes against women is not exactly encouraged, with 162 people convicted of crimes against children (including what, exactly) is not necessarily something about which to brag. Nor is judgement & conviction in as few as 46 days necessarily a good thing.

I'm sure there are people in India who are working very hard and with great commitment to reduce crimes against women and children and to create a fairer and more just society for all. I wish them well.

In the meantime, I'm not willing to risk my safety in India and so will take my travel dollars elsewhere. JMO.
