flight time from LAX to BKK??

I've heard anywhere from 15-19 hours...anyone have a more exact time?

mrwunrfl Aug 6th, 2008 10:11 AM

TG 795 nonstop LAX->BKK in 17h 30m
TG 794 nonstop BKK->LAX in 16h 5m

It depends on where you are stopping and for how long, since Thai no longer has non-stops.

ArizonaShyGuy Aug 6th, 2008 10:14 AM

19-23 hours depending on a layover and how long that is, if you are not going non-stop on Thai Air.

Kristina Aug 6th, 2008 10:15 AM

With a stop in Hong Kong of a couple of hours, it's usually about 22 to 23 hours total time.
Kathie is right, no one offers a nonstop any more.

filmwill Aug 6th, 2008 10:27 AM

If you're not on a nonstop (if you fly after October) then the flight times will be as follows:

LAX-BKK (incl. tech. stop in Osaka):
20 hrs 30 mins

BKK-LAX (incl. tech. stop in Osaka):
16 hrs 45 mins

filmwill Aug 6th, 2008 10:33 AM

Sorry. I should have specified that that's on Thai Air. As others have noted, flight times can be a bit longer than this on other carriers.

We are flying Cathay Pacific with a stop in Hong Kong.

Anyone have any experience with CP?

Kristina Aug 6th, 2008 11:04 AM

My post above refers to CP.
I've flown them a couple of times now, though not in the last 2 years. They aren't bad.
Do you have an itinerary yet? it should tell you the total flight time, no?

jaspertl Aug 6th, 2008 12:56 PM

Kristina:
yep, we have our tickets and itinerary but we bought them 3 months ago....I locked them in a safe in a back closet that's very hard to get to...thought it might be quicker to ask here...

thanks for that....long, long, flight.

hopefully I'll be able to sleep when we get on the plane since we don't leave until 1:30 a.m.

I am usually so jacked up about the trip I can never sleep. I'm going to be asking my doc for a sleep aid. It'll be the first time so I hope it agrees with me.
I may have to try it ahead of time.

I use Ambien every time I travel overseas. I usually travel from the US to Europe, but flew to Japan last October. For me the flight wasn't nearly as bad as I was expecting. I just pop my Ambien and slept over half the flight.

Definitely try before you fly though. Some people have negative side effects, and finding out about one on the plane is not the way to go.

If you opt to take a sleep aid, do try ahead of time. That doesn't guarantee that you won't have a bad reaction, but it does lessen the chances. There have been some pretty dramatic bad reactions to Ambien, sleep walking, sleep driving, etc, including people doing things they wouldn't otherwise do.

Jaspert1 if you go to Cathay's web site & "pretend" to make a booking you will get the total travel time. It will be as "little" as 18-19hrs!!

we use halcion for our sleep aid...

Ok, so that wasn't a hyposthetical question. If you want an exact answer then you would need to be more specific.

If you are departing LAX at 1:30AM then you probably will be on Korean Airlines flight 62 to Seoul. That's 12h 20m.

Connecting on to flight 651? Then you have an 11h 45m connection time before the 5h 35m flight to Bangkok.

I hope that is not your 29hrs 40min itinerary.

HUH?

I missed the mention of Cathay Pacific, sorry. Flight 651 was the Korean Air connecting flight to BKK. The LAX departure arrives in the morning but apparently their first flight (651) to BKK is not until late in the afternoon. I understand now that you are not taking that flight.

I see that Cathay Pacific has a 1:45 AM departure from LAX (maybe it is at 1:30 AM on different dates).

If you were departing on Aug 20 at 1:45 AM, then depending on your connecting flight you would arrive at 10:35 AM, 3:55 PM, or 5:30 PM. Would be 18h 50m or 24h 10m or 25h 45m or thereabouts.

So, about 19 to 26 hours (an answer which is less exact, but more accurate, than the 15-19h that you heard elsewhere).

Maybe this will help:

Los Angeles, CA (LAX) to
Hong Kong, Hong Kong (HKG)
Flight Time: 14hrs 40min

Hong Kong, Hong Kong (HKG) to
Bangkok, Thailand (BKK)
Flight Time: 2hrs 40min

All times are GMT -8. The time now is 12:51 PM.
