Face in Bangkok

Face sounds absolutely wonderful! And I love the website. I can't seem to find hours or days of operation on the site for the restaurants. Are both restaurants open for lunch?

And has anyone tried the spa? The treatments sound fabulous and the prices are very reasonable.

simpsonc510 Oct 6th, 2005 06:39 PM

I think MassBob says that the Indian restaurant is not open for lunch, but the Thai one is. I can't verify that. But, I WAS just there for dinner about a week ago, and it was a very special treat!!! I loved the place!! (it's one of those hidden treasures... but not for long!!!)

I think the spa would be wonderful! Once you see the place, you'll see why I say that.

Carol, thanks for the info, I was hoping you'd respond! The photos on the website (and a quick read of the menu) just reinforced my wish to add it to my "must" list after reading your review. My trip is in November, and of course, I'll report back if we try the spa (seems likely at this point.)

simpsonc510 Oct 6th, 2005 07:10 PM

That's great! I have not seen their web site but will have to take a look. They do have other locations, in London and China (Shanghai, I think). Great place! I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

glorialf Oct 6th, 2005 07:12 PM

what is face's website?

rhkkmk Oct 6th, 2005 07:28 PM

jakarta is one of the other locations...

carol is correct...the thai is open for lunch and dinner and the indian is only open for dinner....normal bkk hours...

the spa appeared to be quite small, but maybe we did not see all of it...the place is really a small compound...we also did not see the bakery---how the hell did i miss that!!!???

i think you will like it kathie...we liked the indian better than the thai...our pork dish at the thai was all fat which was disappointing...

the place is beautiful...!!

Kathie Oct 6th, 2005 07:45 PM

Gloria, it's www.facebars.com

The other locations are Jakarta and Shanghai. Carol, I didn't see anything about a London location, perhaps it's new...

Bob, the website makes it look big with all the different buildings. And while I'm not especially fond of baked goods, the chocolate truffles look yummy. And good chocolate is hard to come by in Asia.

Kathie Oct 6th, 2005 07:46 PM

Oops - one more question - How far is it from the skytrain stop? Their map makes it look very close, but I know those maps can be deceiving.

rhkkmk Oct 6th, 2005 08:16 PM

it was down the soi quite a ways...we were in a taxi so i sort of forget...

take a taxi from sheraton is the best bet...they will get you a taxi as you leave ...a boy goes off on a bicycle or a motorbike and comes back with a taxi...

karen says she remembers it as being down the soi quite a ways...is emporium at the end of the street?? i sort of forget and i don't have a map handy...

rhkkmk Oct 6th, 2005 08:18 PM

kathie---go for dinner it is far more dramatic with the candles and the interesting lighting....in the day you can see the buildings more however....

make sure you look at the huge fish...in the pond...

you are right...jakarta and shanghi...owned from jakarta i believe..

The London idea came from framed photos in the ladies' room at Face. I think it is another Indian restaurant in London (the name starts with Z I think).

Jetlag has me up very early this morning...

I also loved the look of Face from the website and it has made it on to my BKK restaurant. Now, not to sound like a lush (and a cheap lush), but I took a look at the cocktail menu and the drinks were more expensive than I would have thought for BKK, like $8. Now, I am used to paying that and more in NYC for cocktails, but I was hoping BKK would be cheaper ;) I know wine can be pricey in BKK but what can I typically expect to pay for a cocktail?

glorialf Oct 7th, 2005 05:13 AM

Liquor in general is expensvie in thai standards -- more like US prices.

glorialf Oct 7th, 2005 05:13 AM

exception is beer

glorialf Oct 7th, 2005 05:14 AM

Thanks for the website, Kathie. It looks stunning. The thai menu seems a bit uninteresting but I'll probably give it a try anyway. Unfortunately my friend doesn't like Indian food or I'd do that.

Bella_Bluebell Oct 7th, 2005 05:35 AM

There was a Face Bar and La Na Thai restaurant in London at Lombard Street in Battersea/Clapham (don't think they had the Indian there though) that was run by the same people or under the same banner at least.

It has now changed hands and name and is called Thai on the River.

Kathie Oct 7th, 2005 06:08 AM

Thatks to everyone for the info. This board is such a wealth of information!

Bob, thanks for the info on location. I always suspect that places are farther from the skytrain than they look on those little maps!

Cruisin, if you think liquor is expensive, you should see the price of wine! (Another reason to stay on Club floors - free drinks in the evening!)

Gloria, I agree that the Indian menu looks more interesting.

And Bella, your info explains the confusion about where they have branches.

This seems like the perfect place to get a thai massage and then have dinner. It has made it onto the list of MUSTS for our honeymoon! We will be able to kill two birds with one stone because I have decided that we have to get massages every day!

The indian menu does look better than the thai. FH is scared of indian food because it never sits well with him, but maybe I can convince him. He is not a duck eater, so I am already working on him to have the Peking Duck at the Oriental...

kuranosuke Oct 7th, 2005 06:48 AM

kathie, are you allowed to have guests for evening cocktails at the club room?

Kathie Oct 7th, 2005 05:17 PM

Kuranosuke, most places will allow guests in the club room, but at a price.

divediva Oct 7th, 2005 06:29 PM

Face looks wonderful...we are planning on dining at the indian restaurant next saturday.
getting a massage prior to dinner sounds great and then we will check out the bakery after dinner.

did anyone know how far it is from the skytrain? we are staying the first 2 nights at the Asia hotel so it should be easy,

rhkkmk Oct 7th, 2005 07:23 PM

it is a fair walk as i remember

Face is great - just recoed it to someone else. I agree with Bob tho - better for dinner. lighting, decor, etc great then. We tired a great spa last week -www.spa1930.com - 2 mins walk from Chitlom BTS, will drop you by cycle rickshaw to a nearby hotel should you desire. Great ambience like a Thai home.

simpsonc510 Oct 9th, 2005 07:13 AM

hobbes
You and I were in BKK at the same time! You could have come to the Brunswick for the meeting with orgy7 and had a bowl of Ming's chili! Are you still in BKK? I'm back home now.

hallo
I've just been here for dinner - we went to the Indian restaurant and it was fantastic - I'm soooo full now. You see we also stopped off at the patisserie which is next to the entrance. I've just had a bit of Diplomat (bread and butter pudding to you and me) for 35 baht.
The beers & drinks are rather pricey but the atmostphere, food and setting is delightful.
I would say it's less than 100 metres up Suk Soi 38. From ThongLor BTS, it'll take 5-10 mins to walk it. It's on the left hand side just past the back entrance of Coliseum Brewery. Also, if it's evening, it won't be that hot to walk it. Plus in the evening you get to see all the night food stalls on soi 38 :)

divediva Oct 10th, 2005 11:19 AM

thanks bkkmei for the info...
i look forward to visiting the indian restaurant.

Micha45 Oct 21st, 2005 04:57 AM

I had dinner on 10/02/2005 at the indian restaurant. It was fantastic. The drinks are pricey, but you easily can avoid that. They except if you bring your own wine (like most of the resaurants in Thailand). Corkage fee is 500 Baht/bottle.
Enjoy it!
